Genesis Vs. SNES (Game Wars)

I'm sure this has been done before, but I figured I'd start my own.

I'm soon to own a Genesis and already own a SNES and was wondering what y'alls personal thoughts on some titles were:

Street Fighter 2 Champion
MK II
MK III
Samurai Showdown
Mega Turrican
Pitfall Mayan Adventure

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I own those ^ for SNES, but was wondering if anyone thought they were better on the Genesis and why.

From what I've read, the SNES has a much larger color palette so I figured I'd buy only the exclusives for Genesis and the titles that were released for both systems, I'd buy for SNES.. does anyone feel that logic isn't solid?

Oh yeah, duhh... (how could I forget)... I played Madden 95 on the Genesis when I was a kid and LOVED it... and I picked it up for the SNES and was mildly disappointed. The sprites weren't as big and lush and the gameplay wasn't as smooth. I'm soon to pick it up for the Genesis in my upcoming order.

I have NBA Jam T.E. for SNES and it runs great... does anyone prefer the Genesis version and why?

I've never seen Mega Turrican for the SNES, I think you must have an ultr@ r@re prototype or something. Also, your logic is 100% solid. The only way to make a game better on one console than on another is to increase the amount of colours. People who bring in controls, music, resolution, slowdown etc. into the discussion don't realize these things cannot possibly improve a game at all.

fighting games are definitely better on the Genesis since the 6 Button Genesis Pad is better for them than the SNES pad, Mickey Mania is also better on the Genesis.

I remember that controller and it was a very nice controller, but honestly: I don't mind having my weak Punch and weak Kick for SF set to the two side buttons on the SNES controller... and having Block set to those same buttons for MK. I intend on picking up a pair of Super Advantage Controllers for the SNES and that issue will become a non issue. :o

Well shoot, is this Mega Turrican for the Genny different from Super Turrican?

ST feels like a fantastic Shooter, and I'm going to grab part 2... and if the Genesis version is unique, then I need to get it as well.

I can't speak to the Genesis version of MKII, but I've owned the 32X version and the SNES version, and the SNES wins hands down IMHO. The 32X version looks and sounds pretty good, but it just doesn't feel right -- I'm not able to pull off combos that work reliably in the arcade and SNES versions.

(I'm mainly thinking of Jax's deep jump kick + backbreaker combo, which is a key part of his arsenal -- the effective window is about 75% smaller in the 32X version, and only works when you're high in the air.)

OTOH, the Genesis version of MK gets the edge, not just for DULLARD but also because it feels a bit crisper and tighter, even if the graphics and sound are superior in the SNES port. (Though I find the music catchier in the Genesis version.) However I haven't played the SNES version in a while so take that with a grain of salt.

I haven't played MK3 that much on either system (I'm not particularly fond of it), but I'd say it's about a draw. Others may disagree.

By the way, I actually prefer having Block set to the SNES pad's shoulder buttons for MK/MKII, but never did like using them for attacks in SFII -- the L button, especially, was really awkward. For that, the Genesis six-button pad is definitely preferable unless you have an alternate option like the SAC for SNES. The worst is using the shoulder button for Run in MK3, but then again the whole Run idea was lousy anyway IMHO.

Street Fighter 2 Champion - best SF2 port, period. Fastest turbo of any SF2 variant

MK II - get the 32X version

Samurai Showdown - WAY better on Genesis, but Sega CD is best of all (I like it better than the Neo Geo original.

Mega Turrican - different from Super Turrican, and better

Pitfall Mayan Adventure - haven't played the SNES version, but I would go Sega CD or 32X for better music or graphics respectively.

There's actually no Championship Edition (or "Special Champion Edition") for SNES, just "Turbo" released as "Street Fighter II Turbo" (in American arcades it was called "Hyper Fighting", to further confuse the situation). The Genesis cartridge contains "two games in one" although the changes are admittedly minor. But as 17daysolderthannes has mentioned, you'll get the fastest gameplay speeds only by cranking up the setting on the Genesis (it gets fairly fast on SNES as well but nowhere near as ridiculous). Plus the music is pulled off way better on the Genesis (albeit probably not as well as it could have been), although the sound effects and speech were poorly replicated.

And I'd definitely say the 6 button layout helps, but more to the point the d-pad for the Genesis's official "arcade" controller (the first iteration of the 6 button, I think) is way easier to pull off special moves with in the game than anything I've used on the SNES. And I say that as someone who grew up with an SNES and those versions of Street Fighter II.

I actually own the Super Advantage controller and I would not recommend it, because the layout has two buttons on top and four on the bottom. It's usable, but definitely not ideal. The stick itself works fairly well, at least, better than the CPS Fighter stick put out by Capcom (even though that one has microswitches all the ones I've used have been flaky in the control department).

However, the best pad I've seen for the SNES is made by Asciiware (same company behind the Super Advantage), and it's simply called the AsciiPad. The layout is unfortunately the same as SNES, but the real improvement is in the d-pad which seems to register directions much easier. I'm able to perform moves far easier on my two AsciiPads than any official SNES controller I've encountered. The buttons are cool because they emulate the rainbow Super Famicom layout (all convex) instead of the SNES concave/convex purple buttons.

But all-in-all, there does seem to be a dearth of good options for fighting controllers on Super Nintendo compared to the excellent 6-button offerings of the Genesis. Your best bet would be a pair of PSX-to-SNES converters and two good PSX sticks (something by Hori from my experience, but 17daysolderthannes says they have improved the X-Arcade so that might be worth looking into). However, PSX arcade sticks will run you a bit of money, where alternatively you could just spend $2-4 bucks on the Genesis Special Champion Edition and seek out some good controllers for $5 each (maybe even less).

All that said, there are plenty of original Genesis games to make it worth your while if you want to avoid "crossover" titles, so you shouldn't lose out either way. Just never assume it's "safe" to purchase only for the SNES, because there seems to be quite a few cases of superior experiences on the Genesis (if you're only considering those two systems, at least).

Just because the SNES has a wider color palette does not automatically make games that were also released on the Genesis any worse. There are lots of examples of games released on both consoles that are superior on the Genesis (and visa versa). It really depends on the game, you just have to do your research.

Animaniacs, Batman Returns, Earthworm Jim, Joe & Mac, The Jungle Book, Sparkster, Sunset Riders, and TMNT: Tournament Fighters have some significant differences between systems you might want to look into. Mickey Mania is sort of funny because the SNES has loading times (that still amazes me). SNES version of Batman Forever also has load times, if you feel like subjecting yourself to that experience.

Also, be aware that just because a game has the same title on both systems doesn't mean its the same game. For example, on SNES Aladdin, Jurassic Park, and Taz-mania were made by Capcom, Ocean, and Sunsoft respectively. On Genesis, they were all published by Sega. I prefer the Genny versions of each of those games.

Ok, I know Jurassic Park and Taz-Mania cause some sharp division about quality, but you can't denigrate Genesis Aladdin! That one was a classic for sure! I think the Capcom version is amusing but the Genesis version was what you bought a 16-bit console for! (at least I did). :-)

Perry's Aladdin plays like if you'd control a wet towel in space. The Capcom game might not look as good but it certainly plays like a game.

SF games are better on Genesis - most people agree with me on Champion Edition, but Super is better on Genesis as well.
Super SF2 on SNES is missing many voice effects, many frames on animation on Cammy, and Spain girl dancers (censorship) and the sound effects have all been warped to sound very high pitched - harp punches sound like slaps, and fireballs/psycho crushers sound like high pitched lasers.

MK2 is better on 32X (controls,) but SNES destroys the Genesis version (and has a complete sound library, and excellent music)

MK1 (I know you didn't list it) is way better on Genesis, as already posted.
I'm all about MK1, the SNES version is horrible. If two people throw projectiles, only one will hit, the other will just disappear.

MK3 - Personally I prefer the Genesis version. It's made by the people who made SNES MK2, it controls extremely well. Galaga, the hidden bonus game, is also hands down better on the Genesis.

Mega Turrican I feel is better than Super Turrican, but neither are as good as Super Turrican 2 - you should also check out "Turrican" for the Genesis.

I don't know Pitfall yet, but I think it came out on the 32X...I'll have to check this out in the future.

I have a soft spot for Earthworm Jim, but everything else he was involved in (Global Gladiators, Cool Spot, Aladdin) was incredibly overrated.

I am sure that people enjoy the graphics but I am also sure that most are bored after maybe three or four levels, yet somehow those games end up on each and every list of the very best games ever made.

Both NBA Jams were better on the Genesis, if not just because there was actually music that played during the game.

I said it before and I'll say it again, Earthworm Jim 2 is preferable on SNES. I could go into all the differences, but what it boils down to is th ecomplete lack of weapon selection the the Genesis/MD release. (everything else is minor and subjective like color vs resolution or sound effects and easter eggs -music is awesoem in both IMO)

As for SFII, I;m not much for fighting games, but I think I like SCE for Genesis more than the best SNES version (SSFIITurbo), it's definitely the definitive SFII to get on Genesis, I'd aviod SSFII on it. (SSFII Turbo is the preferred version for SNES though -the original SFII release is the least preferable -also the earliest home port of any SFII game, plain Turbo on SNES is a bit better, but SSFII is best for SNES I think)
The music is great but digitized sound is fairly grainy on Genesis, color is a bit different but not really that much of an issue, overall the Genesis version is closer to the Arcade. (many people prefer the 6-button controller for its D-pad and button feel rather than just the 6 face buttons)
Both also run in the same resolution, so unlike some Genesis games, that's not an advantage.

Street Fighter 2 is great on both platforms. My personal favorites are Super Street Fighter 2 on Genny and the classic SF2 on SNES, although it's worth noting that all the home console variants of SF2 are built upon the original SNES version (and not the arcade game which uses a different video resolution) and all are on a very similar level quality wise.

The music on Genesis is better than on SNES, both for SSF2 and SF2CE, but the voices are much less distorted and more pleasent on SNES.


I don't care for Mortal Kombat, so I can't say much about those.... Oh, there's a Sega CD version that' supposed to be some kind of "Director's Cut"...?


Samurai Showdown on Sega CD is MUCH better than the SNES version. The Mega Drive / Genesis version looks pretty much identical to the CD version but I can't stand the music on that one: It's AWFUL! Totally unacceptable!


Mega Turrican is nice, but totally different to the SNES games.

Same for Konami's Sparkster: The SNES version is more like the original Rocket Knight Adventures, which is a Mega Drive / Genesis exclusive.


Konami's Batman Returns on SNES wipes the floor with Sega of America's Genesis / Sega CD version.


Earthworm Jim has a pretty nice Sega CD version that might be worth it if you're a fan.


Aladdin... I already mentioned it: The Capcom game for SNES is a billion times better than the Mega Drive version which I'd consider barely playable at all.

Actually, it plays very similar to Earthworm Jim, so again: if you're a fan it might be worth a try.

Just my points on these games-

Sf2 on SNES looked "chunkier" then the genesis, but handled a little better to me. Either one is worth picking up, they've both got their pros and cons and they're both good.

MK2 on SNES may not be arcade perfect but it's better then the genesis one in my opinion. i prefer the graphics and sound of the snes to the genny. the 32x version kind of makes up the difference but not by much. control is fine on both.

MK3 never played much of these on the snes or genesis, i had a playstation so i got it for that.

SamSho for genesis was cool because of the large sprites but the control took a hit with the three button controller and lack of earthquake. the SNES is actually pretty good but the weird control doesn't help it. i don't mind the always zoomed out look of it, it plays pretty decent. Neither one is "better" it just depends on what you're looking for.

mega turrican to me plays the same on both. either one is fine

pitfall the mayan adventure looks better on snes to me, but controls weird, i can't really explain it. maybe genesis is better.

I personally feel Sega CD's Batman Returns wipes the floor with the SNES Batman Returns...

Though, the SNES does have nice graphics, and cool throws...Sega CD's driving levels look better, and the Sega CD game has much more gameplay variety.

You also get like, no weapons in the SNES version.
Batarang?? That's it? sigh...bosses take forever to kill, and will kill you in like three hits (while they're invincible, and have homing attacks no less)

While over on the Sega CD's (mediocre) platforming levels, you do get batarangs...but you also get smoke bombs, psycho pet bats, an offensive grapple gun, and the homing batarang from the movie.

The platforming levels do a great job of keeping it fresh, and the game is challenging, but not too challenging.

I can beat it without continuing on Full Game, and Platform levels only, and I only need one continue to beat it on Driving Only.

Aside from that, there's the difference in the endings...

Batman Returns on the SNES only gives you the real ending if you can somehow beat it on it's hardest difficulty.

When I was talking about bosses earlier, I assumed the easiest difficulty.
No ending basically.
You get little clips of it the harder you play.

Sega CD on the other hand, has four different endings.
One for the full game, one for driving only, and two for platform only.

Driving only grants you an extra fifth driving level, and platform only grants you an extra, final battle with Catwoman (winning and losing each give you a different ending, but they're basically the same ending, so just win and call it a day)

Hmm, I'm not sure about that. SCE ont he Genesis has a lot fo BG and other graphics which the SNES/PCE ports lack but the arcade has. (and things the SNES added not fromt he Arcade, which the Genesis omits as well)
The Genesis graphics for splash/title screens also seems to be non-optimized for the resolution (unlike SNES), apearing stretched as if they used the immages from the arcade (or simple square pixel conversions) and used those directly, making it look stretched on a TV. (not so for Sprites/in-game graphics though)

Crisper voices on Genesis though due to SNES's interpolation. (PC Engine has the best voice samples of classic console ports though)
I don't like the tracks in Super SFII on MD/Genesis so much, but I definitely prefer SSFII on SNES to Turbo/WW in terms of music. (plus WW lacks th ability to fight the same character)

Huh, you think Virgin's Aladdin (the one also ported to PC, Amiga, etc) plays rather similarly to EWJ?
I find it an intersting platformer concept, GEMs music is weak though, good gameplay IMO. (for Disney platformers on the SNES, I haven't much played Aladdin but it seems a bit like Magical Quest Mickey Mouse -I'd suggest the later preferably though)

SCD Batman Returns has a driving only mode? That's awesome, definitely makes me want to check it out more now. (I'm not a huge platformer fan and it seems kind of mediocer in that part)

SSF2 is like a tradeoff music wise.

Each version of SSF2 got to have the better version of certain tracks.

Genesis got the better Fei Long, and Cammy tracks I seem to remember (can't constantly check while I type...sigh)

SNES easily had the better Mike Bison (Las Vegas) and Sagat tracks.
Those were terrible on the Genesis.

World Warrior had the best tracks on the SNES...I don't know why they had to go down in quality every game.

I think the reason SF2 on the SNES never had the intro was because the guy getting punched in the face was black.

For the Genesis SCE, they changed it to two white guys fighting.

So the line Mike Bison sings about his "cousin on the intro" doesn't apply there.

Off the top of my head, Guile's theme is a bit better on SNES WW/Turbo than Genesis SCE, and Ken's Theme is Much better on SC than SNES. (a bit closer for SNES SSFII IMO)

Turbo is identical to WW as far as I can tell, but Super Stree Fighter II Turbo on SNES has different music. (which makes sense as the arcade version switched)

I'd say it was due to ROM space, I doubt NoJ would have cared much about that. (plenty of other uncensored JP Nintendo releases)

Mega Turrican trounces all over Super Turrican which shares some similairites to MT. Hell, I even like Mega Turrican better than Super Turrican 2. Another Genesis title that is superior is Aladdin. Robocop vs. The Terminator is much better on the Genesis with a more gritty art sytle and blood. Earthworm Jim is better on Genesis with one additional level of gameplay.

It's true that Robocop vs. The Terminator isn't even close.

The only good thing (sort of) about the SNES version is the comic scenes...put them in the Sega game and you're good to go.

Not anything else though, not even bosses.

Just checked it (see SFII Plus Champion Edition on Coolrom), it does indeed have the original scene.

I have these games for the Neo Geo and I was wondering if I should bother getting the SNES versions because a little dickie bird told me that Neo games are bigger, faster, better and more colourful than any SNES game. The games I'm talking about are:

Samurai Shodown
Fatal Fury Special
Art of Fighting 2
Magical Drop

Well the Genesis versions of Street Fighter control way better with 6 button pad. MK on the hand with the exception of the first one is controls better on the SNES due to it's easy layout and stiffer controls. I would'nt bother with any 16-Bit version of NBA Jam when the 32X version is better.

NBA Jam is better than NBA Jam TE...you can shatter the glass!!

Though, other than that...32X version of TE is the best.

Samurai Shodown= Mediocre. Small as hell sprites, animation cuts, gameplay changes, no blood and/or fatalities, crappy arranged music and sfx that sound like they're coming out of a tin can. Only buy if you like to play as Earthquake on your 16-Bit console. The SCD port of SS is the best 16-Bit port, but none (Genesis, SNES, Sega CD) hold a candle to the original Neo version, as they each are missing several things.

FFS= Good. Sprites are small, though not as much as the aforementioned SS. Gameplay is alright despite the obvious animation cuts. Best 16-Bit port of the game (avoid the SCD version at all costs), but very uncommon/rare. Seeing as "Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol. 1" (PS2), with its arcade-perfect ports of the first couple FFs retails for $10 or less, why bother?

AoF2= Never came out in the U.S. Okay port of a game that never was that good to begin with. Again, with "Art of Fighting Anthology" (PS2) retailing for $10 or less (I got a brand-new copy for $10 at a discount bin a couple of years ago), why bother?

Magical Drop= Never played it, but the Neo version is probably better.

So there you have it. Either emulate the original Neo versions or buy the many cheap PS2 SNK compilations. These old, moldy 16-Bit Capcom/SNK ports just ain't worth it unless you're nostalgic. Now rep me dammit.
