Turbo Grafx-16 - Thoughts?

I never paid much mind to it over the years, just that odd obscure console nobody cares about kinda like the Jaguar and 3DO. Well, in recent months I've been starting to look over at it. Apparently the PC Engine was a monster in Japan but failed to sell well in the States. How are the US released games? I don't like importing.

Oh yeah, I think Turbo Duo is the most badass console name ever! It's simple, non-gimmicky, perfectly describes the system and finally puts the word "Turbo" from Turbo Grafx-16 to good use! (TG16 is just as bad as Nintendo 64 for gimmicky and unoriginal) :cool:

There are some good US games for it but the most fun to be fun will involve importing. Playing imports on a TG16 can be a bit of a pain. An expensive adapter or modding is required to play HuCards. Cds do not require an adapter but finding a American Super CD card is a a pain in the ass. I think these days I would bite the bullet and buy a DUO.

TG16 is quite a fun setup, Air Zonk is kickass :D

Is the importing as bad as Saturn where you have to import to get any enjoyment out of it? (which I think is a load of hooey, there ARE to be good US Saturn games)

Oh yeah, since I'm only talking about the plain old HuCard playing machine, how much do they usually go for? I have no clue what they're worth. Are they cheap like Genesis consoles hopefully? :D

Simply the best. Controller is kind of meh, but you get used to it.

You should never lump the TG16 in with the Jaguar and 3DO...considering it was actually you know, successful and all.

There are plenty of great US-only hu-cards too

I was referring to the Turbo Grafx-16, not the PC Engine. TG16 didn't last very long at all.

So it's worth picking up, yes? Without importing at what average cost?

Depends on the cost. Make sure the RF works. A turbo booster or CD is required other wise. I have two of the damn things neither one of the rfs work.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Turbo Booster. Guess that rules out hooking it up via Composite (or possibly S-Video if it supports it) since the Turbo Booster is hard to find from what I've heard. I do have an RF only TV that looks amazing but playing it on a bigger screen with composite would be better.

Still don't know what the common system goes for. NES system go for $20 - $30 with controllers and a few games. Genesis systems go for about $15 - $25 with controllers and some games. How about TG16?

To bad the shipping is $30 on this one and the actual cd player is missing.

Because I'm not shilling out hundreds of dollars on a system I may not even like. I'd rather get the basic HuCard player.

TG16 is pretty awesome by itself, but a lot of my favorite games are either jap hucard or cd (which I don't think the cd games are region locked but I could be wrong). If it were me I wouldn't bother with just a vanilla US system, I would recommend getting a jap system and all the trimmings. If you are patient you can probably get a setup that is not too expensive on Ebay. It's worth it for the shooters. Also there is a 6 button pad and arcade sticks(I always use my Hori stick) you can get for it but be careful bc PC engine and TG16 pads are not interchangeable.

Then in that case, you're really missing out. There's a load of great games on CD and I think it would be best if you picked up a Duo-R or the like. If you get it region modded, then you can play both American and Japanese HuCards (CDs are region-free).
