I stick to my unholy love for EA carts. Only I love them, they're mine, all mine!!! MWAHAHAHHAAHHAA.
Standard US/EU is simple and compact. IMO it's the best you can make, considering 32x had no end labels.
My Vote is still for the Jap MD Cart Design.
Oh yeah, I think it should be pretty obvious that my vote would be for the 32X. :D
Sunsoft, followed closely by 32X. Great poll!
I'm still goin' with the EU/US regular cart design.
The Japanese carts always looked cool to me, so they got my vote.
32x gets my vote. Nice evolution of the standard Genesis cart.
"Made in Japan" Genesis/EU MD carts, sleek design (the JP carts look clunky to me and the slot in the side shrows off the symmetry). The Japan produced Genny carts have a smoother finish to the plastick which I prefer. (the Assembled in USA carts usually have a coarse finish and a cheaper plasticy feel)
VR (especially the JP version) and 32x carts are neat, but th elack of end labels kills them. (that's the main drawback of the otherwise better looking SFC/ EU-SNES carts as well -though I think original famicom carts lacked end labels as well)
I chose US/EU for its compact size, followed by 32x for its markings, then Virtua Racing and Codemasters for their interesting shape.
The EA's yellow tab looks awkward, Wisdom Tree looks like a compressed NES, and the Japanese one look huge and clunky.
Is the JP Virtua Racing cart different from the US one? If so, pics please.
I chose the 32x..love those carts!
still regular EU/US carts for me
Nah, it's the exact same thing, only that the color is grey (I think)

Also, I voted for the US/EU Sega cart. The way all of 'em should have been (except for the Codemasters ones that had the extra 2 ports and the S&K cart)
I love the 32X ones, but they have no end labels, but neither does the SMS Carts. The only difference is the SMS carts came in nice plastic cases. The 32X ones game in cardboard cases. So there is no excuse why the 32X don't have end labels. If they came in nice plastic cases, it wouldn't be that big a deal, but no they don't so it is kind of a big deal.
You forgot RealTec carts. :P
So why are there two different pictures of the Cosmic Spacehead cart?
Variants. If you notice down the sides one cart curves inward in a circle while the other curves at the top but stays straight near the bottom.
I replaced the Codemaster's unnecessary entry in slot 4 with the Sunsoft cart.
bit of a necropost
but i rather like the codmasters cardridges back then codemasters were rather fiercly individual
nor were they afraid to stick it to nintendo with the whole game genie and alladin deck saga
the EA cardridges always irked me a bit for no good reason
and i never liked the yellow tab
I like the textures of the japanese cartridges but hate the peeling issues with the top of the label and the placement of screws under the label. But it's either that or the US/EU cartridges for me.
never been a fan of the jp cardridges
their labels tend to very crowded and messy and i find that an eyesore
and EU\US cardridges are what i expect a megadrive game to look like
they are par de course so i dont really rate them
^ But the Jp cart labels usually have artwork hundreds of times better than the westified US/EU ones, surly that's the most important thing. They do tend to peel like motherfuckers though :(
Oddly, the poll misses out the Jp Taito cart shells as well, which are the same as the regular Jp ones except with no ridges on the side, they are completely smooth.
They also have Taito emblazoned on the rear.
EA carts go in and out very smoothly, and might functionally be better than the regular Sega ones in that respect. The way they look is an aquired taste though. I have Japanese Super Baseball 2020 and the the little EA tab on the cart is light pink instead of yellow, pretty funky variation.
I will just go with the good 'ole regular Jp design though, it's just that much more interesting than the western ones.
Sunsoft would be my pick were it not for the cavity on the side. I always think 'what am I supposed to put there?' when I see it.
Man, how come the only MD cartridge that actually improved gaming experience isn't even in this poll ????
Also Megakey & Game Genie, though not games.
As for pure design I'd choose VR by far. It was bigger to avoid overheat, not because of the SVP.
^ cause the jcart was still a variation of the normal codemasters design
so a code masters vote counts for the jcart too
Sega JP carts fo sho. They look so darn cool and futuristic. I've never actually seen one in person or held one.
I like the EA ones. They slot in best and look interesting.
*shrugs*
dont look at me i didnt create this thread and im indifferent towards the j cart anyway
Well I'll blame you for being indifferent to the best console cartridge ever to grace the earth, then ;)
just picture a cart that gave you a lightgun, or a wireless controller, or more processing power (oh wait), etc etc.
J-Cart made both MD's multitaps obsolete with no overprice. You could have 8 players SIMULTANEOUSLY on Micro Machines TT & 96, sharing the 4 pads (or arcade sticks, for that matter). This one must be the single best cart design ever.
^ yes i know all that
and i still dont really care for it it no doubt also drove up the price for a feature that wasnt used all that often
no doubt one of the reasons codemasters abandoned it
they abandoned it because it was, ahem, 1995. You know what happened there.
Actually there are people who still plug a Genesis only for multiplayer sports at parties, specially massive multiplayer racing games, like this one or skidmarks. You have to have 7 friends, though
My favorite is the original Genesis design. It screams nostalgia to me.
Although a good runner up is the Sonic & Knuckles cart. Ever since it came out, I've dreamed of seeing this technology continued. I'm looking in your direction WaterMelon ;)
It was hard to choose, but these three are my favorite:
Sega US/EU
32X
Japan MD
Texture, color, shine, etc play a big role for me too.
Probably the worst for me is the EA carts. I really can't stand the colored notch in the side and I don't like the square shape.
I must say I am just happy with standard Sega shells. Look and fit perfect. What I am not happy with are those VHS-like thick plastic cases and thin manuals. The cases tend to lose the hole for hooking and often do not hold the cartridges properly. Manuals are real disaster. Bad format (why such a ticket like long version instead of a standard book aspect ratio?) and often hardly any useful information inside. What I would like to see is the variation of the ZX Spectrum Spanish cassette cases - small, compact, neat...

My vote goes to Codemasters! It was pretty nifty to see that the cartridge could support 2 additional controller ports! Just make sure not to shake the controller wire too much! :p
