So I Got A 37" LCD TV 1080p... Now what?

One of the best deals I could find... I really wanted the Sanyo 37" $478, 1080p but not available online or any of the 14 Wal-Marts in a 50 mile radius....

So I got my component Cables for the 360, and it will go up to 1080p, but with the HDMI cable it will upscale the dvd's and divx movies, but don't know if that will work on mine since it doesn't have the HDMI built in! And have to get a converter...


Also have my compent Cables for the Wii, AWESOME!

Got S-video for the Saturn!

Dreamcast VGA is on the way!! WOOHOO!!!

But what about my SNES and NES and CDX?

What can I do to get a better video quality from my CDX with 32x attached? Without tearing it open?! No converters?

You have to either tear it open or use a converter of some sort. You can't get a better picture without doing one or the other.

The best for Genesis, SNES, Saturn, 3DO, Jaguar, etc. is something like this. This will scale it to 720p. I'm sure there are also similar things that will scale to 1080p. NES, you're pretty much SOL.

So I'd have to get a composite / s-video to SCART converter?! Then a SCART to HDMI converter!?

Set it up, stare at it, caress it, and then make sweet love to it.

you do realize there are composite inputs on the back of that TV, right? They make switchboxes, you know....

This would also be a good time to just switch over to emulation via PC and play all of your games with graphics filters to avoid the inherent blocky ugliness present on HD TVs with pre-DC systems.

...Or, just get a smaller CRT TV for your older systems, like I plan to do.

Great TV looks awesome. I'm not sure why'd you want a Sanyo TV though. I haven't heard anything good about them, only bad stuff about shoddy quality.

Plasma is better.

Also, I don't see what's so wrong if the games look a little pixelated. That's how RGB looks and it's the best you can get. As long as the games don't have input lag and there isn't any straining in the upscaling, you're good to go. :ok:

No, you'd only need the latter. Almost every console from Sega Master System to the present supports SCART out of the box (exception: Turbografx/PC Engine, which requires a mod). You can get a Mega Drive SCART cable easily. SCART provides the best picture quality with the Genesis. There are, of course, devices that upscale from composite or s-video, but they'll look worse, since they use a lower-quality source.

Well then RGB isn't the way to go. There's a reason Composite video is as good as you get without modding (in the US anyway).

Big Screen TV + Genesis = Fuzz from hell
Before you buy anything try messing around with the Sharpness setting. On some big TVs the stuff looks better on the lowest settings.

My point exactly. Everyone raves about how amazing RGB is, but it's actually the most pixelated video option there is, so anybody who complains about that really shouldn't be playing vintage games. The whole point is the blockiness! :D

Now if you have fuzziness, input lag, strained color quality or anything like that, then you should invest in a better TV. I highly recommend Panasonic's Viera Plasma sets. Even 3D Saturn games like Daytona USA look amazing on it! It will change your opinion on HDTVs of today, just be sure to use S-Video. :ok:

I actually just got myself a Viera plasma. After hearing so much about how classic games invariably look like shit on any HD set, I'm pleasantly surprised.

CRTs are best! :p And I'm talking HD, the disadvantage is size, but the picture is still better than plasma (well, there are trade-offs depending on phosphor persisntance and dot pitch). CRTs have a moderate disadvantage to newer LCDs power wise, but are way better than plasma sets, the main disadvantage beign physical size. (bit even there, they're OK, unless you plan on mounting them straight to the wall -which is tough with a plasma too due to bulk and weight -not to mention necessary ventilation)

LCDs are pretty much pushing everthing else out though, so it doesn't much matter. (a good time to find deals on soem nice used HD CRTs though)

That would allow S-video or RGB output through the SNES (liek the Super Game Boy), but good luck finding one.

And the SNES outputs soem nice S-Video, just make sure to get a good cable, many 3rd party SNES/N64/GC ones are crap, connecting composite to y/c, so either nintendo cables, or make absolutely sure you get a proper erd party one. (monster cables seem dependable, not sure of other 3rd party ones though)

If the TV has a good scaler, using an HDM adaptor is not advantageous, best case is if the TV can detect 240p output an dsimple upscle ith without deinterlacing, I think soem Samsung and Phillips HD LCDs are known to do this. (our SD Phillips LCD seems to) Also disable all filters you can and possibly turn sharpness to zero, though the latter seems to depend on the TV. (high sharpness always adds artifacts though due to edge enhancement filtering, somewhere between 0-2 might be good -we keep our SD LCD at 1 most of the time)

Nope. You hook that baby up and even SNES games won't support anything more than composite. You'll get no picture even from SNES games using an s-video cable since this thing has its own A/V out that plugs into the SNES A/V Multi-out and your A/V cable (composite only) plugs into that. The video never goes through the SNES. The only thing you can buy that supports better-than-composite video for NES games is a Famicom Titler or something like that. It outputs RGB and it looks great.
