Streets of Rage 1 Speed Run

I recorded and uploaded an original Streets of Rage run about a week ago, thought I'd post it here. It's on the Hardest difficulty, I do not receive any damage in the run, and I do not use any specials. It could be the first of its kind, but I'd be surprised considering that Streets of Rage 1 is by far the easiest SoR to complete without damage. I may attempt a no damage SoR3 run at some point (with a lot of practice) but I'm starting to doubt no damage is humanly possible in 2. No death with Max is still a goal for an upcoming run of mine.

Good job, but I find what you say interesting because to me SoR2 is the easiest (and most enjoyable) followed by part 1. I can plow through part 2.

If you do part 3, go with Bare Knuckle 3 instead of Streets of Rage 3.

- I think speedruns would be much more interesting if they'd be recorded via real hardware instead of emulators.

Some awesome Blaze action going on there. The Mr X battle was very impressive, as that guy is cheaper than a discount prostitute with a STD.

That sentiment seems to be very common, however most people seem to forget an important point; the difference between completing a game and completing a game without receiving damage is huge. Another thing to remember is that said SoR2 speed run would be on the Mania difficulty. There are less people that can do Mania without dying with Axel than fingers on your left hand, and none that can do it without receiving damage. So far, I don't think anyone has done a no death run of Mania with Max at all either.

To elaborate my first point, damage values are 100% irrelevant in a no damage speed run. I don't care if a Signal can cause a game over with a single backhand or deducts an almost unnoticeable amount of health off the bar, either way I have to restart the run. The enemies in 2 do not deal the ridiculous amounts of damage as the ones in 1 and 3, but they do attack much more frequently and with greater precision and awareness of other enemies. This makes a Streets of Rage 2 no damage run by far the most difficult of the 3. I'm starting to doubt it is even plausible.

Streets of Rage 3 features more aggressive enemies than 1 for sure, but they still rely on high damage and less on aggressiveness than 2. Additionally, being able to use specials with huge invincibility periods every few seconds without penalty alleviates a lot of the difficulty too.

If I do a speed run of part 3, it will definitely be of Streets of Rage 3 and not Bare Knuckle 3. While the increased damage in the US version is not a factor in no damage, a lot of bosses have a lot more health in SoR3, which increases the difficulty. I can appreciate a taste for the original colour palettes, but choosing the easier of the versions isn't a viable option when the theme of my runs is difficult parameters.

I do agree with your second point, though. I'd love to record off the actual hardware, but that requires money. It's a lot easier and more cost effective to use an emulator. To get the same quality recording from an actual Genesis would run me a minimum of a couple hundred dollars. I would also have to put out money for every game I run. Still, I'd like to get a capture card soon, and I AM in the market for an HDG Genesis 1. I have one of those awful full-board, Taiwan model 2s. I recently got a paypal account set up in hopes to acquire one sometime in the near future.

Thanks. Blaze was the prime choice for this speed run. Adam's lack of speed and Axel's horrid reach (and lack of speed) make no damage a train wreck with them. Mr. X was an ass, I almost got hit on him twice. I have notes on the various sections of the speed run in the video descriptions.

Great job man. I haven't completed SOR 1 yet. I exhaust all my lives and continues on the normal difficulty setting. It's not an easy game by any means so that's an amazing accomplishment in my book! :!:

Eyy, congrats.

Streets of Rage is perfect as a co-op game, especially if you can get the 'team' moves memorised.

Edit: Wait, doesn't SoR 1 have Mania! difficulty as well?

I never thought Mr. X was that hard. I'd lose a life or two but I've never lost the game when I make it to him.

I have to say taking no damage at all is damn impressive. How many tries did it take to get there?

No, only Streets of Rage 2 has Mania difficulty. It is indeed unlocked by holding a and b on controller 2 while selecting options.

Mr. X himself is easy, it's his minions that make him an ass. Without them the Abadede infinite knee method would work just fine.

With a game like Streets of Rage 1, I just recorded a lot of playthroughs for about 5 days until I did one without damage. It's not the first time I've done it. Including attempts that were screwed up really early, it probably took at least 30 tries.

Well, I bought a High-Definition model 1 Genesis with the box off Ebay for about $40. I also bought a metric assload of games, including Streets of Rage 1.

All I need now is the capture card. Unfortunately I've spent quite a lot of money recently so it will have to wait.

I just beat it with a friend the other day... I'd actually never completely the game before that.

I just watched a couple of these vids... I don't understand how you didn't get hit when fighting the two Freddie Kruger Bosses... something looked weird during that Boss fight... they hardly even attacked you.. almost like the AI was retarded er something. When I fight those guys, I can hardly get a lick in without dying a couple times.

That fight looks bunk man... sorry.

The "Freddie Kruger" boss won't attack if you're roughly on the same horizontal plane but considerably lower or higher on the vertical plane. It makes running up and grabbing them really easy, especially with Blaze because she moves so fast. The AI in Streets of Rage 1 is VERY exploitable. It's pretty much the only reason no damage is even plausible. Infinite combos and invincibility frames all over the place too.

AI baiting is a very common tactic in speed runs. Check out the Golden Silver boss in my Gunstar Heroes speed run if you want to see the extent some video games bosses can be exploited.
