Megaman 2, 3, or 4.
Megaman X
Megaman Legends
The rest is passable.
Mega Man III
Rockman Megaworld. ;)
Mega Man 2 is what did it for me. 'Twas the best in the series IMO.
I haven't played Megaman Legends (I've always wanted to) so I can't really say it's my favorite, but judging by gameplay footage and from watching my friend play it for hours back in the day it probably would be one of my favorites.
I liked Megaman 2, 6, 8, and the first two Megaman X games (I didn't really like the other ones that much).
for the classics I'd have to say Megaman 2 is the best,
but new game wise.. I have no idea, Because I haven't followed the series in ages.
But I REALLY enjoyed Megaman Legends 1 & 2.
so for me MML is the best.
2 and X are by far the best
then 3
then 8
then it's all about the same
The legends series is TOTALLY different from the 2D games, though Legends 2 is MUCH closer than the original Legends, but it's rare and costly (but that's what ISOs are for, ePSXe FTW!)
The MM Anniversary collections are a good way to grab them if you don't like standard emulation yet don't want to pay cart-by-cart prices for them.
Mega Man: The Wily Wars or Rockman: Megaworld is a compilation of the first 3 games with the Mario All-Stars treatment, but for Genesis. The real cart is super rare and one of the most expensive games on the system, but the ROM is very easy to find. IMO, if you're going to play MM1, you should play it on MMWW/RMW.
There are also the PSP remakes of MM X and MM1, which are pretty decent and can be had for cheap (or easily found and bootlegged).
Mega Man 2
Technically I like MM2 the best, but I think MM3 is the better game. MMX was fantastic, too, and I LOVED Mega Man Legends (although when I played it again recently, some of it's flaws were more apparent).
I always felt MM Legends was too slow and drawn out with too much nonsense between the action. I mean, people complained about the 2 seconds of overworld on Sonic Adventure, but what about all of that nonsense in Mega Man Legends? Do I really need to find lipstick for a painter in a Mega Man game? seriously. From what I've played of MML2 (I never got far into it and then I forget about it, maybe time for a revisit?), there was much more action and it made it alot more enjoyable. I wish the story/setting would've followed the normal games more instead of going into an over-cutesy RPG world.
Hmm... I found MML2 to be the more boring of the two. IMO the original had more impressive (and more frequent) boss battles. I personally don't think you'd like the sequel any better than the original.

out of curiousity are any of the other Mega Man X games any good? particularly wondering bout 2 & 3
