megaman 8 is pure crap imo.
All the SNES Mega Man X games are fun, but the first is the best.
Part 1
Lol... I'm not sure why so many people are so adament about there being enough differences between 1-6 to even make distinctions. To each their own obviously...
They all feel about the same to me... all suffer from the same amount of retarded Sprite Flicker and Slowdown and generic levels/etc... but imo: they're all the same when it comes down to being solid Platformers with great NES Music and Sound FX.:o
Well, the way I see it, MM1 started things off but was too buggy and slapdash to achieve greatness. MM2 took what MM1 did right and then pushed it into the stratosphere and just had unbelievably good music, level design, and overall experience. MM3 added new moves and features and had almost as good level design and presentation as 2. From there, it was all phoned in cash-in sequels for the rest of the NES lifecycle.
For 1988, Mega Man 2 is damn amazing. It also happens to be my favorite game of all time.
Favorites:
Mega Man 2/3 (NES) - I got introduced to these through the somewhat maligned Mega Man 2 for the Game Boy. I've also got a soft spot for Mega Man 6, being the first NES Mega Man I played.
Mega Man X and X4 - These are the only 2 games in the X series that weren't completely forgettable. Granted, I have yet to play X7/X8, X8 looks promising though. I like X and X4 about equally, X4 has the better gameplay and graphics but it seems really short whereas X1 is quite substantial.
Mega Man Legends- I'm not sure why they didn't make a third one for the PS2 or something. Given the technology upgrade they could've made something great. Legends 2 must have been a complete bomb(saleswise) because the original went GH. I do like the 2nd game but it did seem to be a bit less action-oriented.
MML2 came out 2 days before the launch of the PS2, so it stands to reason that it was a limited release. Regardless of how well it might've sold, it was too obsolete to merit a GH re-release or even a reprint, hence the reason it's so rare and valuable nowadays. I guess I was lucky to grab a "new" copy (fucking case was broken, but they swapped it with another one) from EB when the PSX was on its way out. I could make a 2X or more return on that investment.
Megaman 2! It has the best music too
For the original series, MM3 is my favorite. It did everything right that MM2 did, but it actually had some challenge to it in the later levels. I find MM2 kind of unsatisfying because it's just too easy. MM8 is a close second. Unlike MM7, it managed to improve on the NES games' graphics AND the gameplay. It has the best music in the series, too (sorry, MM2).
For the X series, X3 and X4 are my favorites. X3 probably has the best weapon set of the series after X1 and playing as Zero with a buster is pretty cool. The only thing I don't love about it is the music, which Capcom should have been embarrassed over. I love X4 (and X5) because playing as Zero is crazy fun. The only thing I don't like about X4 is that almost all of X's weapons are shit. I only ever use aiming laser and ground hunter. X5 rates pretty high, but playing as Zero makes it too easy, unlike X4. I like X1, but it just feels a bit too basic compared to the later ones. Never played X2 and X6 is complete garbage.
PSX or MM64?
Isn't 7 a pretty low one though, compared to the average?
A cool note that on GC, MMX collection displays in 240p, though MM collection is 480i. I like the 60 FPS display and scanlines personally, so I really appreciate that on MMX collection. :) (and indeed, the different on a 25-27" SDTV is quite noticeable from a couple feet away -which is where I usually sit)Quote:
The MM Anniversary collections are a good way to grab them if you don't like standard emulation yet don't want to pay cart-by-cart prices for them.
It also has awful slowdown in 60 Hz and wrong aspect ratio with still some slowdown in 50 Hz. (50 Hz tends to work on EU units only anyway) The AR problem would have been common to original NES and SNES users EU as well though. (fusion displays both modes at the same AR, so emulation wise the speed is the only problem -not 50 Hz corrected)Quote:
Mega Man: The Wily Wars or Rockman: Megaworld is a compilation of the first 3 games with the Mario All-Stars treatment, but for Genesis. The real cart is super rare and one of the most expensive games on the system, but the ROM is very easy to find. IMO, if you're going to play MM1, you should play it on MMWW/RMW.
Overclocking will help, but even with 10-12 MHz there's 60 Hz slowdown I think, but without overclocking and in 60 Hz, the slowdown is worse than on the NES originals.
I tend to be pretty poor at most 2D platformers, and MM is one of the worst examples, I suck at pretty much all of the NES games, am OK at 8, and probably best at MMX1 which I get stuck right after the spider miniboss in Sigma's fortress.
The other MMX games seem to get harder, so for me MMX is the best simply because it's playable enough for me to enjoy at my skill level.
what everyone think of 9. how much is megaman wily wars worth seen it om ebay a couple of times for about £250
I could go on for days about how half-assed and phoned-in 9 was. It would've been a decent addition if it came out in 1993, but in 2009 it was just lame IMO. If they wanted to use vintage sprites, they should've used some sort of special effects to set it apart from the older games. I guess the $10 download-only nature helps a little, but I can't help but feel it was pointless, especially considering what people have managed with MM hacks that work on real hardware.
Mega Man Wily Wars is worth quite a bit, at least about $100 US, though it may be rising.
Mega Man Wily Wars can fluctuate anywhere from $90 to $200+ in some cases, moreso towards the 90$ spectrum, average price is probably about $120.
As for the game design, MM9 kind of seems liek a mix of recycled (or remixed -depending on how you want to spin it) 8-bit MM levels and gameplay combined with a higher difficulty level than any of its predicessors. The last bit automatically cut out the possibility of me having much fun with it as I'm not very good at these games (MMX being the one exception, and I'm not amazing at that one either). However, my little brother, who's beaten MM1-6 and 8 I think (gave up on 7), got stuck and frustrated on MM9.
Honestly, I'd rather have seen a more high-end arcade style 2D look to the game (at least on par with MM8 and the later MMX games, or power baddles or PBII), possibly having an "8-bit" mode as well, like LA did with the new Secret of Monkey Island and its VGA mode. They could take the 3D rended route as well, like thexder Neo and such, but I think the detailed 2D route is the better option given the games chronology.
Contra and Castlevania Rebirth took that route quite well.
Wily Wars has very bad slowdown as I mentioned before, a decent overclock (like 12 MHz) could help a lot though, or playing in 50 Hz, as PAL users normally would. (but the aspect ratio is off then)
I had never even experienced those as a kid... so when I picked my SNES up and booted up Megaman X for the first time, I was blown away by the look, sound, and new features, BUT I was disgusted at the huge amount of Slow Down the game has to deal with.
I put it down after playing it for 30 mins and decided I was going to pick up the Megaman X compilation for Playstation 2 (I think it was... maybe it was for Gamecube or Wii, I can't remember) so hopefully that one will play better... plus I'll get versions 2 & 3 (which are retardedly priced on Ebay, fuck paying $50/ea for more games full of horrible slow down), and 4-8 all for $20-40... seems like a much better deal.
