Yeah, I would agree with that. I don't really think there needs to be a time line anyways. Standalone games are okay by me. It would probably just be a lot less trouble if they would have just said Link doesn't age, or he reincarnates or something. Same with Zelda. Whatever though, it's mostly the fans who come up with that stuff. Didn't one of the makers( Shigeru maybe? I dunno) Say there was no time line?
A Link to the Past had its own backstory, a history of Hyrule, some of which was necessary for the plot. Then for whatever reason, they decided to make Ocarina of Time, the game whose plot is a A Link to the Past's backstory.
From then on, it appears as if the developers just make a game how they please, but stick in little references to other games in the series. Then fans try with all the mind power they can muster to chronologically link all the games. Sometimes I wonder if the developers stick in the references just to throw off all the fans and make them come up with a new working timeline.
Personally, I have to go with the split-timeline theory. It makes the most sense, as Majora's Mask and Wind Waker seem to reference the two different ends of Ocarina of Time. It also works in the Oracle games nicely: Seasons happens in one timeline while Ages happens in the other, then immediately after they swap, making sense out of the linking system. So one timeline has Seasons into Ages, the other has Ages into Seasons!
Definitely watch gametrailers' own timeline feature as well.
Yeah, but I'm not sure that fit either, some games obviously fit together (direct sequels/prequels), but others either vaguely fit or get haphazardly placed. (1+2+Awakening fit well, OOT+MM fit, and LTP seems to fit somewhere in between)
Like which split timeline does LTP fit, or the original games, etc?
I think it's best to not worry about it and just go by any games which do seem to clearly fit. At least its not as convoluted as things like the SW expanded universe. :p (I personally like to stick with the inconsistencies the X-Wing series added ;))
