"What's a Sega Genesis?" was asked when I had put up a flier regarding the sale of my Genesis couple weeks ago. They had to be in their late teens. I dunno if it's really an age related thing or what, but damn if it didn't make me feel a bit old (27).
Try selling a Mega Drive and get even more 'WTF iz taht' from people. :p

For an adolecent that's fairly understandable, but even mid to late teens should know what one is. I only had a couple freinds with them growing up, and at that, rarely had the chance to play them myself, but they were around. My 15 year old brother had a freind who still had his hooked up a few years ago (he would have ben 10-11 at the time), though that freind has since sold or given it away. (it was the family console, though the oldest child is still a year or 2 younger than I am, so probably late adoptors -it was a model 2)
I mean it's not unthinkable, but for something that very well may have been more popular in its generation everywhere outside of Japan (or Asia), people that age should know about it. I bet that guy knew what an SNES is though... if not, it might be more understandable. (especially if he didn't know what the difference between an NES and an SNES was)
Actually, that reminds me, I guy in his teens I met once last semester in community college mentioned he had an NES and a Genesis, but wasn't exactly sure what I meant when I mentioned a Super Nintendo. Heh, apparently he'd either never played one, or the memory didn't stick; I had to explain it was Nintendo's console durring the same generation as the Genesis. He seemed to be more into PC games in general though, so that might explain it somewhat.

I know of a few friends my age who had no interest in video games at all. Its odd but they do exist. I wouldn't be surprised if those kids were like that too.
That's ok, I went game shopping a few months ago and the teen whippersnapper behind the counter not only scoffed when I said "Genesis", but followed that up with "I'm sorry" as in "I'm sorry you have to use that".
I did get a hearty laugh out of seeing a cart only copy of "Super Mario World" tagged at $25. Fucking dirt common game jacked up 4x what it should be worth, and I'm a loser?
I'll continue spending sub-$10 for my games thankyouverymuch.

This reminds me of last summer when i visited this gamestore in a town nearby,
I was talking to the guy behind the counter when this.. 12 year? old kid came riding in (wheelchair)
and he looked at the N64 poster that was hanging on the wall and asked what kind of console that was supposed to be?
Its weird for me to hear that since i experienced consoles/home computers from the start,
so you can not just turn to your parents and ask "how was it when you experienced this?"
funny actually, But time flies and before you know it these kids will have grown up and they'll meet a kid
who will proceed to ask them what that Xbox9000 thingy was and how the graphics stink because they aren't 4 dimensional.
Considering that my sister once asked me "What's a DS?" recently (and she's no stranger to consoles in general, since we grew up playing gameboy and Mega Drive together and she has a PS2 of her own), I can't quite understand why someone would make a fuzz about this. People tend to be ignorant in some areas. That's pretty much a given.
