Rumors like these come by every year, but if Sony DOES spread the 'Playstation' brand to smartphone/tablets. It would probably kill the PSP brand or at least some 'value' for a full fledged PSP2 should they release one.
I think Sony just '32Xed' themselves with the Go & this is entering Saturn territory. :p
why can't they just make a PSP Go: the phone. You can already Skype on a PSP, just go full circle and add a speaker, mic, and touchscreen and make an N-Gage for modern times. iPhone is pretty nice, but a quality PSP-enabled phone would be pretty hard to top, especially if it could run homebrew emulators without modding.
Perhaps they'll go the N-GAGE route, nixing the UMD nonsense and turning PSP into a platform instead of a hardware configuration?

If it is a true competitor the iPhone, I can see it taking off in a big way if they do it right. I wouldn't even compare the existing PSP to a PSP phone, the installed userbase (again, if done right) would be exponentially bigger than the PSP. Also, if they lowered the prices to iTunes prices (nothing more than $10) I could see a big following.Quote:

Further than that, the new Sony Online Service/PSN needs to be a kickass software sandbox, able to coexist on multiple types of hardware, No inconsistencies. It wouldn't hurt the Phone any if it had some form of sandboxed native support, from Android & Symbian applications. A wrapper or something from Sony that gives them more control & feeds off the outside development. They could pick and choose the best apps and throw Google some love.
IMO this would kick start Sony back to the path of excess success. If only they don't shoot for alienating the customers with ridiculous prices for a short time. The original Playstation won because it was cheap to buy and develop for.

Sony has given me those feelings with the PSP Go. i bought one because I'm a gadget whore. I do like the system, and even though there are plenty of games for me, their lack of support still pisses me off. I probably could not justify purchasing another sony handheld again.
