Thomas the Tank Engine on Genesis? Never even heard of this game. I thought that show was late 90's.
I'm pretty sure Thomas has been around ever since the early 90's.
Actually the original series was early/mid 80s, with Ringo Starr. ;) I watched reruns of that in the early 90s, along witht he continued/follow-up series of the early 90s. (with the same sets and most of the same actors, not Ringo though)
I saw a bit of the late 90s/early 2000 shows/movies, and I've got to say the 80s/early 90s stuff is a lot better, not just from nostagia either, it just seem to be a better produced show by comparison. (as far as kids shows go)
I had this on the Commodore 64 maaaaaany years ago, looks like the same game, was pretty fun! :)
... You people have seriously never heard of the children's book series that inspired the TV shows? Really? Amazing... I remember reading some of them when I was little. Going by Wikipedia evidently the original book was written in 1946, and the series has gone through several authors and continued until at least a couple of years ago. The first TV show started in 1984, I guess, with continuing series up to the present day, but the books long predate that.
Going by GameFAQs, the released Thomas the Tank Engine games are in 1990 Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, and Commodore 64 versions, all Europe only, and then in 1993 SNES and Genesis versions, US only. It also mentions a cancelled NES version. I don't think they're all the same game though -- the CPC one for instance is titled "Thomas the Tank Engine's Fun with Words". Not sure if the others are the same. Maybe.Quote:

Although apparently unrelated, I think the Genesis version is far too similar to the C64/CPC versions to be coincidental...
I used to love the TtTE series. I still maintain it's Ringo's best work. I'm also told it traumatised many children a bit, which tbh can only add to its goodness. :D
The Genesis game's not bad, considering - the Amiga version's better though. I seem to remember it features the other trains just buggering about (in a strangely malevolent way) while you go about your tasks - and if you're stupid, collisions can occur. There's no possibility of collisions in the Genesis version, just lots of repetitive tasks and lame races. No proper music or Ringo either. Which is why I never set about owning it. :)
But the original book seires up to the early 80s wasn't specifically centered arounf the thomas character was it? It seems such looking at wiki's list of th railway series: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...he_Tank_Engine
I just skimmed it, but it looks like Christopher audry created that character with the 80s series of books, with the first "really useful engines" released in 1983, about a year before the TV Series started.
I had (or probably still have) one or 2 books fromt he series of the mid 80s, but those always depicted photos of the models like in the show, if not directly lifted from the show. I think "more things about thomas the tank engine" was the first to start using th ephotographs rather than illustrations.
I remember renting it many years ago. I thought it was pretty cool at the time, dunno how it holds up now.
Never heard of the game before, but I remember watching it a lot when I was really little.
My daughter loves the Genesis version of this game. It has some coloring book activities, along with several game modes, and it has a lot of speech too. A great game for the little ones.
Same with the "Never heard of this game, watched it when I was little" crowd. In fact, before this post, the only thing I knew about this game was that it uses GEMS in the sound engine list.
Doesn't look to bad for a little kids game; way better than Barney. I also know a few little kids that love the show... and the movie Cars.
Yes, in the US series at least. The British one was separate. I saw the George Carlin series much more often, naturally, as that was the current one when I was little; I only saw Ringo on a few occasions of old reruns being shown.
Wikipedia's article on the Thomas and Freinds series seems to completely omit the rest of the cast, namely of the entire live action portion in the "real world," wierd... (or the singing puppets in the Juke box for that matter)
Edit: ok this explains it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shining_Time_Station
I completely overlooked that refrence in this section of the other article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_...s#Storytellers
So the books derived from the TV series would have actually predated the US Shining Time Station series, as that didn't start until 1989 (with Ring only there the first season, and using new recordings of the narration to better fit American engish and politically correct terms -ie Sir Topham Hat opposed to the Fat Controller), which makes a lot more sense. (the original station Enginer was only there for the first season as well)
My daughter thinks this game rules! [the SNES version]
That is wrong, mostly. The second book from 1946 introduced Thomas, and he quickly became the most popular character. You are right that the author preferred to keep the focus on the ensemble cast so there wasn't a central focus on Thomas until the 1980s, but he always was the most popular character.
And yeah, great (book) series for little kids. :)
I had recently found this for my 5yr old son who loves everything Thomas.
Now owning every Thomas title made from 1993 PC version to the PS2 [PAL] Eye Toy VG. The Sega version is prob. the most playable as a game but, education value is low.
-Main screen starts up with the game talking the name.
-Choose options of easy/med/hard and watch Thomas ride down the track.
-Input your name.
-Game play: choose from 6 trains to paint [MS Paint, Flood Fill game] or select Thomas for the real games.
-Pick Game/Explore/Race
-RACE: Just press the direction on the tracks against another train. Pickup candy points and slow and fast balloons over the track. You race up to 6 trains until you win with positive talking rewards.
-GAME: You get basic missions to find coal cars, timber cars, coaches and more to deliver them to stations.
-EXPLORE: Just ride your train everywhere!
The maps are huge, they can get confusing at times. My son just watches the train drive around the tracks for 30 minutes because it is cool to him. I have played the SNES which has a readable storytime and puzzles. Graphics are not as clean and crisp like the Genesis version.
Since my son likes to play the game so much. I modded my Wii for homebrew so he can emulate and play on the Wii now. Let him destroy the Wii and save my Sega.
I was actually at the CES when it was 1st shown. I thought it was a lame game then, I still think it is.
OK..How old were you? Thomas is geared towards 3-7 year old kids.
You may think it is lame but, to a 5 year old it is the s*it!
I want this game! How awesome to be able to drive Thomas the Tank Engine. People who own this game are living my dream :(
$4? Damn. My son would like it but I never see it under $30.
How the fuck does this thread have so many posts?
BECAUSE..Thomas is the bomb!
my son loves thomas, he has the vsmile game.
This is so awesome! This thread is so awesome! http://www.megadrivechamps.org/excited.gif
Raise you hand if you own Thomas on DVD *raises hand*
Honestly I am a fan of the series, I love Thomas and the jet engine....it is very funny. I also love the early shows where George Carlin narrates. Hell, I use to watch Shining Time Station.
I'm looking for full episodes of STS.
I seriously own about 30+ DVDs of Thomas.
i got the game last week its pretty fun , great game to add to the collection
I jst don't know why it's like $39 on ebay..it's a kids game
