Baloo: try the NES 2's dogbone controller if you get a chance. The d pad looks the same as the NES and SNES pads, but for reasons I can't explain, it is a lot more comfortable. I like it so much that I never bothered to make my multiconsole stick work with the NES.

I used nothing but joysticks all the way through the Saturn days with rare exception. Now I find gamepads a little bit more convenient but I still have to break out a joystick for beat-em ups or fighters. I'm also better at shoters with a Joystick.

D-pads by far, they are far more accurate, and thus in the games allows for highly skilled gameplay(Complex fighters are a prime example), and despite the fact joysticks are known for speed, with practice, a D-pad can even be much, much faster.

I have an arcade stick but just doesn't feel right as have to use on a table or try and balance on your lap and so have to go with the d-pad.

I actually use my stick almost as much as my pad. I like to play shooters, and arcade games with the stick. Games like Thunderforce IV, Shinobi(SMS), Shadow Dancer, and a bunch of other games that I'm way too stoned to think of right now.
