whats your least favorite video game controller?

there are so many crappy wii controllers and periphrials i couldnt decide which one to list:daze:

i left off the jag controller as well as the colecovision, intellivision, odyssey, and atari controllers to keep the poll from getting too lopsided.

i enjoy using the 64 controller when playing doom 64 mainly because you can map the buttons any way you want. and for some inexplicable reason i enjoy playing the madden ports on the 64 (except madden 64:yuck:) partly because of the controller other than that its the stupidest controller ever.

i really like playing old nes games with the original controller purely for nostalgic purposes. especially contra, mega man 2, and punch out.

never played a tg16/pc engine/turbo duo cd

the saturn 3d controller is just perfect for me. probobly my favorite of all time either that or the genesis 6 button. i also really like playing with the snes controller as well. everything after the 16 bit era is a bit much for me honestly, i like small easy to operate controllers with a simple layout.

I continue my reign of all out N64 hate.

If I had stubby fingers, or the hands of a 5yr old, that controller might be awesome. But since I have normal adult hands, this controller is a pain to hold.



P.S. I'd call the system perfect for a doorstop, but that is an insult to doorstops.

Anybody who thinks playing Street Fighter with an snes controller is like pulling teeth needs to get one of these:

Me too. Even as an adult, I still find the N64 controller to be fairly comfortable and easy to use. It does look weird compared to other controllers, but it works well for what it is.

But what I really don't get is when people rag on the SNES controller. I think it's one of the best controllers ever made and it works really well for platformers and shooters.

I think the SNES d-pad is kinda sloppy, but that might be the controllers I have.

I have hands big enough to like the duke (10" hand span span -thumb to pinky tip) and I find the N64 controller more comfortable than the xbox s-pad or dual shock controller, as well as SNES, SMS, and NES pads. (when used in a similar fashion)

The GC controller has an amazing shape which, in spite of its small size, manages to greatly reduce to foibles of the N64 controller, but that only extends to the L/R buttons (when analog is preferred) and the grip; the buttons on the N64 are better and my thumbs take much longer to get sore.

I'm pretty close to that, weighing in at 9in thumb to pinky tip.

That being said, I hate having my hands in such close proximity, like when using the N64 analog + buttons.

Same reason I don't own a SP, too goddamn tiny for me.

N64 one, very unconfortable to use. 2nd is SNES. 3rd are playstation ones.

I don't get why some people consider PS controllers uncomfortable, to me
they only have minor issues, like a slightly bad D-pad, no 6 buttons on front.
But that's not a problem, until you play MK or Street Fighter :P

i think is not that bad, it's ugly as hell but really comfortable to hold imo. buttons placement is a trouble if you want to play fighting games, otherwise they're acceptable. About wii you're right, i'm used to play all the games i can with the GC controller.

an other alternative on wii is the classic controller btw, but that's a really disappointing controller :|

something i dislike a lot on nintendo's analogs is that octagonal shape, it's really annoying

It's completely uncomfortable if you've used any of the following controllers (in order of better comfort than a Dual Shock 2, worst at the top to best at the bottom.)

Dual Shock 3
Saturn 3D controller
GameCube controller
Xbox S controller
Xbox X controller (360 pad)
Xbox F controller (when Fatty rules the world, he will make all the doors sixty nine inches wide, so that he might squeeze through...)

Even the Boomerang looked more comfortable than the Dual Shock.
Sony needs to upgrade their ergonomics, as well as their dpad position (and ideally just copy the S controller's dpad, since it's 100% perfect, apart from maybe grip)

See kool kitty89 you have big hand's my hand's are rather small as i can't palm a regular basketball to save my life. I think the N64 is getting ragged on because of those C buttons they had on it.

??? The Xbox and DC analog sticks have similar placement... (which I much prefer to the Dualshock's low left stick)

Yeah I remember that Super Pad 64. The thing was a lifesaver for me in Goldeneye. I've never seen that Alpha Pro, though it looks nice, I probably would've liked it since it's somewhat similar to a dualshock layout.

The DC layout I was ok with because it only had the one analog off on the side, though I would've liked it even more if the D-pad was above the analog. Now, the Xbox has 2 analogs, and I just find it weird how they're not mirrored. If they swapped the location of the D-pad and the left analog I'd like it a lot more... but then I guess it would be a dualshock lol.

I don't know man, maybe I'm just old. But I need my D-pad to be on the far left, preferably above analog sticks.

The Super Pad 64 Plus was/is the main reason I play my 64. The normal sized c buttons combined with a more comfortable grip make the 64 enjoyable.

Once I finish Shining Force Feather, Resident Evil 2 with the Super Pad is next on my list.

It really sucks when your main gripe with a good console is a poorly designed (imo) controller. At least in most cases there are alternatives.

I must particularly disagree with some of you who've chosen the dual shock. It is, imo, one of the best controllers ever designed.

The truth is, one shouldn't think of fighting games when dealing with the dual shock. It obviously wasn't meant for them (not entirely, that is). But there are some 2000+ more titles that will provide one with optimal gameplay only when played with the Dual Shock. It doesn't even matter which version of the PS controller we're talking about, it was made just right and that's the reason it is, by far, the longest-lived design to this day. ;)

Honestly, I haven't seen anyone state their love for video game controllers, so I feel I must:

In order of awesomeness, I love the following controllers:

1. Sega Dreamcast: Perfect ergonomics when you have average-to-big hands like mine. It is one of my favorite controllers ever made.

2. Dual Shock: Any version or precursor/successor of the Dual Shock is undoubtedly the optimal tool for more than 99% of the games they entail (and that's a lot of games).

3. Xbox: The fatter the better. I felt right at home with this one after the demise of the DC. It was the true spiritual successor of the DC controller. Too bad Microsoft had to go and mimic the Dual Shock for the 360 (that's not entirely too bad, though. Since the Dual Shock is one of the best controller designs ever made. It just killed-off whatever remnants of the DC we had).

4. Any of the 8-bit/ 2-action button controllers stated above are fine by me. NES, SMS and/or TG-16 are neither great nor bad. They perform the job and that's what I need. Let's talk about the 5200 controller or even the Vectrex one. Now, talk about unnecessary gadgetry. So, as far as the squareness of the former three, even with big hands I don't find the need to press on them so hard. It may just be me, though. ;) So, in other words, I also have love for the NES, SMS and TG-16 controllers.

5. Saturn 3D and/or N64 controllers just have a weird design, but they work perfectly. What little the Saturn 3D controller fails in ergonomics, it gains in strength and durability. The oposite is true for the N64 controller. In the end, they haven't disappointed me yet.

Ok, so that leaves, from the above list, two controllers. The SNES and the GC controllers. Honestly, in my experience, only the GC controller has ever managed to completely disappoint me. I can play the games entailed, but I've always felt that it could've been sooooooooo much better. Man, oh, man do I dread those springy shoulder buttons. The aftermarket ones help, but not so much. It's like you're going to the gym and working out those index fingers. And don't even get me started about the terrible d-pad and action buttons (of which I've already stated my distaste earlier on).

As far as the SNES controller goes, here's my basic opinion, it has far too many buttons for such a flat and small-looking device. Everything about it is ok except the ergonomics. I'd love that Capcom fighting pad had it not made the mistake of placing the shoulder buttons next to the action ones. Besides that, I'll state some love for it, but not as much as it's 16-bit counterparts. Honestly, unless you were playing some kind of advanced fighting game, all you needed was three action buttons to get you through the 16-bit era.
