I'd use a DS over the DC controller. The analog stick isn't all that great on the DC pad and it's easily broken.

I haven't read the whole thread but how can I be the only person to vote for the SNES controllers! I hate all the pale purply colors of the SNES and its controllers. I hate the weird rounded feel of the controllers; I hate the awkward shoulder buttons!
I wish the SNES had the multi-colors like the Japanese controller.
Purple and lavender? Nintendo might as well ask me to put on a dress.
I see nothing wrong with the SNES controller. It's equally as terrible as the Genesis 3 button piece of shit.
I agree KD.
I like the 3-button Genesis controller actually, lol.
The only problem I have with the SNES controller is the somewhat-wonky L and R buttons, mainly for fighting games. But as a whole it's not bad really.
I don't much like how close my fingers/wrists are with he N64 either, using the left grip for the few d-pad based games feels much more natural. (and part of why I wish more games supported alternate D-pad control along with the fact of the analog stick wearing out)
Definitely feels better than the SNES, and perhaps better than the GC in some ways. (handles are not quite as comfortable but spacing is better)
The short grips are my biggest gripe though, leading to cramped ring/pinky fingers after prolonged tight gripping.
There was a time when I preferred the bulky grips of the super pad (not plus), but mainly when my hands were still smaller (~9-14 years old), when the stock controller was still more comfortable as well. The problem is that the grips are truncated, so even more crap inducing than the standard controllers. (I think there's another 3rd party controller that is better with this other than that rare alpha 64) The buttons on the super pad are also too convex and firm, so sore thumbs --stick is more reliable but also a bit too grooved for comfort. (might try a bit of sanding ;) -and I do like the concavity)
@QuickSciFi:
My problem witht he PSX controller (classic or dual shock) are: dpad being odd and too stiff (I prefer tall, cupped cross pads or dish pads like Gen/Saturn). Buttons are also too stiff and too small/close to the surface, making for sore thumbs. Start/Select are a but small and uncomfortable, but not too much of an issue with limited use (more of a pain after thumbs are sore)
Analog sticks are so-so, a little sloppy feeling to me though, and I liek the 8-notch rim nintendo uses.
Finally, the grips are a bit clunky shaped, not quite at the ideal angle or curvature and too short, like the N64. (at least N64 managed better curvature)
I will say the l/r buttons are better than the SNES.
I think the early west only released dual analog controller might be a bit better though: http://www.the-nextlevel.com/feature...al-analog-pad/
I'm not totally fond of the PSX type layout of controllers, but a lot of 3rd parties manage much better with the same general layout, like several logitech designs and firestorm: http://images.google.com/images?hl=e...-8&sa=N&tab=wi
Of course, there were some almost exact clones of the PSX pad, like this: http://images.google.com/images?um=1..._rfai=&start=0 (other than supporting the screw-in thumbstick)
Of course, I think my all time favorite goes to this beast: http://gepachika.exblog.jp/20535/
(unfortunately I've only got a gameport version and gravis went out of business soon after, so the USB version is rather rare)
Nice, long, curvy grips, broad dished analog stick, OK d-pad (not cupped, standard gravis fare except no screw hole), 8-way knub/hat, 6 face buttons plus select (S) button, 2 added buttons at the top (never much used those), 2 digital buttons under the grips, and 2 analog triggers.
Plus it supports gameport daisy chaining.
I think it might have had soem inspiration from the saturn 3D pad, though I think it might have come out around the same time. (1996)
We got the multicoloured pads in Europe, too, nyerr. :)
The US buttons seem to be fashioned after parma violets (which, btw, are vile. It'd probably be tastier to eat the snes pad buttons.)
I gotta take a duke on the duke. It was the only controller that gave me hand cramps, and it was just a few minutes while I was playing one of the demo units at wal-mart. The revised xbox controller was great though, one of my favorites.
Why do people call it the duke instead of the Fatty?
I've never seen it called the duke (except apparently in this wikipedia article...which also calls it the fatty)
Does the controller have something to do with 3D Realms?
Or Shadow Warrior?
BTW I love the US SNES coloring...I don't like the multicolored buttons that other countries got.
I disagree, I like the 2-tone color scheme a LOT more than the rainbow look... like the white JP saturn pads... (dreamcast isn't quite as bad)
2-tone gray like the JP SFC-Jr might have been nice though and the console/cart styling is another story. (at least we got end labels) I like the look of the SNES-2 more than either of the original designs.
Also: lack of concave buttons on SFC/EU Snes=Fail. I recently modded an SNES controller to have 4 concave buttons. ;)
Wow, those look a lot like these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smarties_%28Ce_De_Candy%29 (different than what you're probably used to being called smarties -which are like M&Ms iirc)
Woha woha woha.... woha! Hold on there: the 3-button is full of jawsomeness! WAY better than the too-small modestly ergonomic SNES pad... Nice round d-pad, big, responsive concave buttons, and a substantial piece of molded plastic to really grip!
6-button isn't bad though, definitely better than the SNES pad still.

There you go, some love for the 3-button. ;)
For the record, it's Mark Bussler's preferred genesis controller for non-6-button games. (and those better played with the arcade stick)
List of controllers to cramp my hands:
PSX classic/dual shock and derivatives (and close copies)
SMS/SNES/NES/N64 (the latter only due to short grips -not an issue when I was 10...)
X-Box 360
X-Box Controller S/JP
Wii classic controller (probably -barely used one)
Note: all due to ergonomics resulting in cramping pinky/ring/sometimes middle fingers from prolonged tight gripping without proper molding.
Almost definitely Colecovision and Intellivision controllers. (never used)
List of those which don't:
Xbox classic/Duke
Gravis Xterminator
Dreamcast (maybe)
Game Cube (almost, the grips barely skate cramp territory)
Genesis 3-button
Genesis 6-button (barely)
possibly: Atari Jaguar (nice big comfortable shape), Saturn 3D controller (haven't used since I was 10 or so). Probably Saturn mk 2 controller and possibly mk.1. (thumb pad would be the deal breaker -it bothers soem but not others, some preferring the mk1 --better L/R buttons on the mk.II are another factor)
Note: this is all for cramping only, not soreness. (ie sore thumbs)
I've seen it mainly referred to ad "original" "classic" "fat" or "duke," (maybe phat), duke being the de-facto standard and how it's most often listed on ebay. "original" gets confusing since the "original x-box" is referred to as such to differentiate with the 360.http://images.google.com/images?um=1..._rfai=&start=0

;) I don't like the convex buttons either. Again, I think gray might have been OK. (and MN12bird made a badass black painted SNES with the original purple looking super cool --the gray eject tab looks a tad out of place though)Quote:

I voted N64, but on further consideration, the SMS pad is probably worse. The SMS pad kind of gets a pass from me because you can use Genesis controllers (or a wide range of others, including C64 joysticks); plus, when I bought my (used) SMS, it came with a Sega Control Stick instead of a pad. N64's only alternatives are in third-party offerings specific to the system, which aren't that common (and, of course, not all of them are very good). And unlike Sega (moreso with Genesis and Saturn), Nintendo did not make a range of controllers, they just had the one.
I personally thought the original Xbox controller (which I call "Controller F") was crap, but I loved the S. I'm less fond of the 360 controller.
For some reason game companies seem to think Americans don't want anything fun and want everything to macho looking. Colorful buttons would have been just to much for the people who brought the world Rambo.
