which of these controllers is your least favorite to use? why?
I must say the Gamecube controller. It is the least practical of all. Ergonomics doesn't even count on this one. Sure, it feels right, but it is the least responsive of all the ones listed. even the N64 one towers over it. Just look at the shoulder buttons and compare their "quickness" to respond as opposed to those of any gameboy advance when hooked-up while playing through a gameboy player. It just doesnt cut it. I'd add an analog stick to an original gameboy advance and a couple more action buttons and I'd be set to play any gamecube title...
...Oh wait, that's right. They have that gimmicky thingy called the Wii classic controller. Thanks. I'm set. ;)
N64. I like having every single joystick/button being reachable with two hands and not having to use a different grip for everything.
Playstation's little contraption, I've always hated it. My hands often became sore while using it, the controls often were awkward, and they just felt cheaply made.
I equally hate the Xbox controller.
Mine does not fall on this list, but I'd choose the TI 99-4a controller which is absolutely god-awful. The button is more like pushing on a cookie.
Anyway, from this list, I'd choose the N64 controller because if the damn joystick that will always break or get loose no matter what you do. Also, too many buttons for Nintendo, in my opinion; or, at least, it feels that way. The C buttons were always weird to me because I could never tell which one was up, down, left, or right so I'd have to look. Why not put a D-pad or something else there? A good D-Pad, that is, because the N64 controller's d-pad sucks. Also, the weird ways you fit your hands into this thing were weird and I don't remember any game that uses only the joystick and D-pad or only the D-pad and buttons. Why bother with the d-pad? It was never used for any game I played!
I hold it like any normal controller, I know you're suppose to hold the middle section with your left hand but I never did that. Of course I'm sure if I went back and played a N64 game now I might not find it very ergonomic but it worked for me for as a kid.
Xbox needs 2 options, 1 for the S controller and one for the original. I didn't play the Xbox too much with the "Duke" but it was horrible when I had to. There's just something about it that feels so cheap, it made it difficult to get into whatever game you were playing. The S is good though and nowhere near the worst.
Gamecube controller is ugly and sucks.
Playstation controller I hate how the handles are bent downward. Atfer years of playing I have developed "playstation hands" a form of carpal tunnel syndrome.
The Saturn 3D control pad literally melts into your hands. Only about the most perfect video game controller ever made. ABC XYZ LR and a d-pad. They finally got it right.
I also like the Dreamcast controller except for the 4-button layout.
You want to talk about a sick controller? I like the Capcom soldier(SF2) pad, which was released for SNES, Genesis, and 3DO. Can't go wrong there.
I voted for the SMS pad. I like all the other controllers on the list, but the SMS pad just doesn't work very well for games that require precise movement. Whenever I play SMS games, I just use a 6-button Genesis controller and nothing else.
US Saturn controller. Not listed but it made my thumbs bleed and it's partially responsible for the hardware to fail.
Don't believe me? - Think N64 or Wii was released with this thing.
Edit: Agreed with ApolloBoy: The SMS controller didn't really work too well. Of those listed it is the worst controller.
Ugh, the Nintendo 64 controller. I mean yeah, it was revolutionary and caused everyone else to follow suit with the whole analog stick idea, but usually first isn't always best.
It's the Dreamcast controller for me. When I hold it my fingers rub up against the housing that holds the VMU's. I would have been happier if they just took a Saturn 3D pad and slapped a VMU port on it.
Gamecube is the worst.
The 64 had some crazy shit going on, but it was practically efficient. Triggers, Easy buttons to access depending on how you're holding it.
The Gamecube took what could have been an awesome evolution of that idea and fucked it.
They got a better stick w/octagon to make directions easier, They did that might right.
Then we got a stiff D-Pad too small to be functional near the bottom, out of the way. A C-Stick with no grip platform to it. They took the 4 button layout and made it ridiculous. Gaint A, tiny B, Kidney shaped X & Y placed on the right and top of the A button. No analog pressure sensitivity included in any of them.
The Triggers were giant analog finger saddles, blocking reasonable movement to the Z button, which was itself tiny, oddly shaped, and stiff.
:yuck:
At least it only had 2 handles...PROGRESS!
Why they designed that wretched N64 controller like that....I CAN NEVER TELL YOU!
No other Nintendo controller was ever designed like that or any other controller made. It is just...awkward at times.
The SNES controller isn't exactly one of my favourites either. Not awkward like the N64 one. It's just a little too small for me and it's D-pad is quite bad IMO. It isn't very clicky.
N64's biggest problem was wearing out analog sticks, and even so, it's not unacceptable in many cases. (my most worn out one still works reasonably well, being most worn horizontally -about 30-45 degrees of waggle)
I do wish more games supported alternate D-pad controls though, some games should also have had somewhat more flexible control schemes. (true for most consoles though)
At least 3rd party pads have more durable sticks.
The A and B buttons are some of the best for button mashing ever made IMO: I can get every action command/combo for Super Mario RPG easily without resorting to mashing with my index finger. (sometimes do for similar SNES or GC games)
GC is OK, I like the triggers (best analog triggers on a console to date IMO) and the shape, more comfortable to grip than the N64, surprising for someone like me with large hands (10" span). The buttons on the N64 were better (IMO a and b should have been like on the N64 and X and Y either the same or like larger C buttons or such -like the GC's B button perhaps)
The C stick was undersized but worked OK, probably better than the undersized Dpad.
I tend to get sorer thumbs with the GC than the N64, but more cramping in my fists from gripping the N64 controller.
For Xbox, I really like the duke (big hands) and rather dislike the S controller, though I can see how it is more practical for small hands. 9could have been better designed -GC does a better job with this)
I haven't held one in a long time, but I remember liking the Saturn 3D pad a LOT, given the buttons and D-pad being similar to the 6-button and JP saturn pad, I'd say it's probably got an edge over the DC controller. (DC was OK though)
I remember the SMS pad being comfortable and working well, but supposedly the D-pads wear out.
NES was fine too, though not perfect, I think I liked the dogbone one less other than the D-pad. (definitely prefer the Genesis controller)
Can't comment on the TG-16.
I really dislike stock Sony controllers, I get sore thumbs quickest of pretty much any console (especially with the D pad) and it's uncomfortable to grip. I think the early dual analog controller released to the west might have been better (longer handles and slightly different sticks), but I've not ever used one.
At least the similar logitech and thrustmaster derivatives are a lot more comfortable.
I'm going to go with this one.
Master System is by farrrr the worst!
is took the nes concept and gave it the sharpest angles, akward buttons and OH GOD, GOD THE D-PAD! it felt like playing the console with a dried out sandwich.
If anything, the NES's controller edges are WORSE! I didn't mind the MS's D-pad.
The rest of the controllers are alright. I really like the Dualshock controllers for racing games like the Burnout series, but can't really say anything for the FPS's as I never played them on PS consoles, cept Doom lol.
Gamecube controller is fairly comfortable to me, no major problems, except my thumb often slips off the analogue stick.
Xbox is pretty good, very solid controller, 360 carries that over quite well, only it isn't as solid.
The Dreamcasts controller is quite odd. I barely use the analogue stick due to it's high placement, but it's alright I guess.
The Mega Drive/Saturn controllers' is where it's at! Very comfortable to hold, arcade like clicky buttons, light but not cheap feeling. Saying this to both the 3 and 6 button controllers.
The dualshock is just awful for any kind of 3D navigation that requires aiming/looking around.
Obviously Nintendo has the worst controllers of all. I'd have to go with
the N64, because it's just made for aliens, not humans. Who thought
it would be a good idea to have a third grip on the controller? Gamecube
gathers negative points for awkwardly placed and formed buttons, but
at least you can play it without changing grips and there is the alternative
of the Wii Classic controller.
I can't stand the Playstation dualshock controller, especially that fucking horrible D-pad with no center, so your thumbs get destroyed when playing any PS1 fighting game. The analog sticks aren't centered where your thumbs are, so the controller cramps your hand. The X O Triangle Square setup also annoys the shit out of me, couldn't they have used ABXY?
Dreamcast is second worse for me. They really went bass-ackwards with that controller, between the shitty triggers, raised D-Pad, cord coming out of the bottom of the controller, huge-ass VMU slot in the way, and diamond shape button layout. And the Saturn 3D Controller was practically perfect, why did they have to change any of it?
I personally don't have a problem with Gamecube and Nintendo 64 controllers, they're pretty comfortable. Sure, the 3-handle thing on 64 is annoying, but it's not super terrible. And the only problem with the GC controller really was that the buttons were positioned really weirdly.
I'd have to say the big honkin' original Xbox controller. Man, the thing was HUGE! Too big.
I think that was exactly what was so great about it.Quote:

The worst for me: N64.
I hated the original PSx controller. They split up the D-pad and used shapes instead of letters. I do think the DS was a great idea from analog sticks and such.
The Saturn's 3D pad was way to bulky for my taste it was like the 3 button all over again.
The DC get's a big WTF from me. Sega always had good to great d-pads then Sega tried to go all SFC on us. THey screwed up the d-pad then took off 2 buttons like are you serious?
PlayStation D-Pads (with the exception of the PSP Slim's) have always SUCKED. Why the fuck did SNK made their PS2 games only playable with the D-Pad?! Seriously, back in 2007, when I played the PS2 version of Metal Slug 3, my fingers would fucking HURT near the end of the game! At least in Metal Slug Anthology you could also play with the analog stick. Speaking of the analog sticks, they aren't great either (most notably the PSP's. What the fuck Sony)
where's the PSP, I hate that damn thing for controls and hand cramps.
you had to love the 360 DUKES! they were manly controllers I could use them for longer than any other console because of that, however who ever mentioned SEGA megadrive is spot on the cresent shape made it well comfy to hold.
imho Dualshock is atrocious.
i hate that splitted d-pad, usually i place thumb on the center of the d-pad and make a little quick movement to press directions i want. on sony's controllers is fuckin impossible. If i try to move the thumb around it i feel like i'm sanding my finger.
Analogs are awful either, too narrow and wrong position. I have a slower reaction time by using my thumbs horizontally than vertically, especially when i have to move left or right.
My vote is for the N64 Controller, though if the Atari 5200 Controller was an option that would definitely be my vote, as much the N64 controller sucks the Atari 5200 sucks a trillion times more.
LMAO @ dual shock in second place for worst.
Great stuff.
its surprising aswell concidering its on its 3rd generation too! Me thinks its time for Sony to have a remodel.
The Atari 5200 controller is definitely the worst controller ever! The crappy thing doesn't even auto-center. I voted N64 for the poll though.
I can't believe someone actually voted the TurboGrafx-16 controller as the worst. It is far better than both the SMS and NES pads in every respect.
I dislike the N64, it just feels awkward and gimicky...kinda like the Wii.
Like someone said being first is not always the best.
I've used the Saturn 3D controller more than the other Sat controllers I own, guess I like it.
:ok: I Agree w/ Joe :ok: , The D-Pad on the SMS controller sucks, while the NES Controller is better than the SMS controller the D-Pad & Buttons feel a little too stiff, The Turbografx-16 standard 2 Button Controller is far better than both NES & SMS controllers, though still not as good as the 6 Button PC Engine Controller which is 2nd only to the 6 Button Genesis controller for me.
The Wiimote sucks but since that isn't on the list I'll pick the original huge ass Xbox controller.
Im not putting anything in since the Wiimote isnt in there, it was a good idea but they didnt put good enough tech behind it. Same could be said for the console as a whole really.
The Wii had plenty of thought into it, how else could they sell essentially a repackaged Gamecube to thousands upon thousands? the Wii is just basicly ITS controller nothing more.
but alas I agree, the whole thing needs to use a better stabalizer and be less sensitive, but you have to give it, its enguinuity.
The Xbox Fatty!!!
We've all been playing Condemned 1 at my house with that.
We all agree it's the most comfortable controller ever, but the button layout winds up being its undoing.
The face buttons are too close together (fixed on the S and X controller) and the black and white buttons really needed to be L1/R1 buttons (fixed on the X controller, aka the 360 controller) also the dpad isn't quite the best (fixed on the S controller, but ruined on the X controller to a new low...)

those are some garbage controllers for sure, but it just wouldnt be fair to include the first gen controllers maybe in a poll by themselves(odysey, 5200, colecovision, intellivision) but im sure the colecovision would dominate that poll. definitely the shottiest controller ever made.Quote:
I take it you've never seen the Intellivision and Colecovision controllers.
