Sorry but I need to state this: saying that X-Men the game sucks from beginning to end is, well, a suckage in itself.
It's a masterpiece of platforming and comic book character adaptation.

I fully agree with you. It really is a masterpiece if given the time of day and patience. You don't even have to rush it. Just one attempt every now and then is the best way to tackle this game. How the game slowly grew on me and how I eventually came to conquer it back in the day. Got my moneys worth out of this game way more then any Genesis Sonic game, that's for sure.
-Poor hit detection.
-Bad platforming. Frequently the floor will give out without warning. Many platforms are a bit too specific about where you land.
-Absurd difficulty.
-Poor level design overall. Frequent leaps of faith, confusing layouts, and inaccessible portions without foreknowledge are the norm.
-Jean Grey will frequently drop you right back where she picked you up.
-Boss battles are far too specific in their conditions for beating the enemy.
-Limiting mutant power is inconsistent with the X-Men comics, and besides which, it makes for a boring-ass game.
-Wolverine's claws should always be out. Always. He never fights without them in the comics, he shouldn't fight without them here.
-Limiting the number of times you can change X-Men is arbitrary.
-Music is grating and amateurish for a game circa 1993.
-Beating the game is impossible without Nightcrawler.
-Nightcrawler's teleport is a crapshoot. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it goes wild and sends you wherever the fuck it feels like.
-Mojo world has traps that are impossible to escape without Nightcrawler. If you can't switch X-Men, you're fucked.
-Broken reset button on your Genesis makes accessing the last level impossible.
-4 playable X-Men, and they're all male. The only ones worth using are Wolverine and Nightcrawler.
This isn't a classic. It's an annoying, cheap piece of garbage that some people love to look at through rose-colored glasses.

Well clearly not everyone has the same love for xmen as you do thief. You really are ignoring the faults of the game and keep saying it's better then part 2. That might be but part 1 still has basic collision faults and if you think the music is some of the best then wow. Ok.
Hodor.
Hodor.
my issue with xmen's collision is that, much like chakan, nothing feels solid in the game. maybe it feels solid to you and it clearly does as you have a lot of love for it. right on man, i feel the same way about Magician Lord. i even said, xmen isn't a bad game, but it definitely has its faults, the most being the collision detection. i can work past all the rest, even *thpbt* and *splat* sound effects :)
and if homeboy is trolling well i don't recognize his comments from other threads so i'll leave that between the two of you. i shouldn't have said anything about it to begin with.
Not sure why you keep bringing up the avgn, i haven't mentioned him and his reviews are entertainment and i treat them as such.
I love me some castlevania but I DESPISE the knock back, but that is a quirk of the series. it's a solid feel when simon/richter/whoever does get hit and very seldom is a jump missed due to clipping. I wouldn't compare that to gambit or cyclops inability to land on a platform because they clipped through the ledge, or that weird way you can land on ledge and pass through enemy projectiles or even the enemy themselves unharmed. the game isn't bad but has a weird feel to it.
good discussion ! :ok:

Sigh.

I have to ask since I started looking thru your post history thinking this was a one-time thing. Do you really feel the need to point out what you hate so much in comparision to other people that you have to be borderline insulting to them?
I'm not here to have a dick-measuring contest with you but damn if you arn't one of the most angry posters I've seen on here in awhile.
It's like you come in with "This game sucks, If you like it you're a fucking idiot" is what I've read thru a lot of your post history. I mean yeah ok you don't like the Genesis as much as the Super NES and that's fine. However a lot of people here do and are here because of that. To be honest I wouldn't go on a Nintendo site and bash the shit out of the Super Nintendo because I know that's just asking for people to argue with you. If you feel you can't talk about games without acting like you're looking down on some people then maybe Nintendo Age or some other forums might be better off for you but I would rather you just tone it down instead of coming off like you're trying to pick a fight.
Both are good games but X-Men is definitely the better team game. There is more room to manuever plus you have the extra teammates that can mean up to four X-Men on screen at once. If you get stuck while playing two player, you can use Jean Grey to catch up, too. In comparison, X-Men 2 doesn't really have much for the second player to do since there really isn't a lot of room and there usually isn't more than one or two threats at once. X-Men 2 levels are just straight paths through with nothing to explore.
X-Men is more true to the characters in the comics than any other X-Men game. No character in the comics can just use his powers as much as he wants. And Wolverine was constantly struggling against his "beast" nature, hence the beserker mode in the game. Nightcrawler's teleports were exhausting, too. X-Men is the only game that allows him to teleport other characters, too. Probably the worst thing about Nightcrawler in all of the games is that the teleport is treated more like an attack instead of as an element of surprise or transportation like in the comics.
Gambit really is a good character in X-Men. He has the longest range for his melee attack, can double-jump, and if fully charged, his cards have a homing effect. Definitely under-rated.
Cyclops beams can be aimed in all directions, making him possibly the best character. It's really cool how every character has advantages over the others.
The extra X-Men each have their advantages, too. Rogue's attack is powerful but you have to aim it. Jean Grey is also under-rated, again you can control her direction.
The levels have more areas to explore than X-Men 2. It's cool how you can "see" the platforms of the Danger Room in each of the levels except Asteroid M. The story and dialogue is true to the source material, too. Each character "talks" in his own lingo, too. Using the Danger Room allows the story to include locations and enemies fans of the comics are sure to recognize. I think X-Men does a great job with the license. It's the closest game to the comics at the time: good story, true to characters, good action / adventure.
Oh, and the reason there are no female characters? Well, first of all, there are three in the game - Jean Grey, Rogue, and Storm. You do control them as extra characters. None of them would be a good fit for this game, though, since all of them can fly which ruins the platforming aspect of the game. I suppose you could force them to walk like they did the arcade game but that stinks. Sega choose four popular characters from the time that fit the style of the game very well.
Some comments about the other X-Men games around that time:
The arcade game - awful. Not true to the characters at all. Everybody is basically the same. Why even make it an X-Men game if nothing about it is like the comics or the show?
X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse (SNES) - good characters but the story is lousy. I mean, why all that stuff all on Genosha? And there is no team play after the intro level. It's a fun game, definitely worth getting but once beaten, I really haven't gone back to it.
X-Men 2 - good characters though why can't Nightcrawler teleport the other player? The Phalanx makes for a good story since they can take on anything. Cool that Magneto is included. The two player mode is more limiteid than the first game since there isn't much room to spread out. I really like X-Men 2 but X-Men is still my favorite.
X-Men: Children of the Atom (Saturn) - this is why I bought a Saturn. Never regretted it, either.
I meant to get back to this sooner. I'll answer these in order.
1. Yes, but usually only when I passionately hate the game in question.
2. Saying I prefer SNES to the Genesis is blatantly false. I like to remain objective about what I play and I give all consoles a fair chance, but a bad game is a bad game regardless of its status as a "classic." Of course, this is a Sega site, so funny enough, most of the games I talk about are going to be Sega games. That said, I do have some words for the NES/SNES library.
Hodor.
Good tips. I always liked using Gambit in the Savage Land because his cards can home in on those killer wasps.
You can switch as many times as you like in the Danger Room so make sure to level up everyone. Charge up Wolverine last because you can always just let his health charge up on it's own.
You can only carry one of each back-up X-Man but there are extras hidden throughout each level. If you find one that you already have, make sure to use the one you have first before collecting a new one.
The only reason I'm asking is from what I've read of your post History..
It's really coming off like you're praising SNES games in a obviously polarizing way:

I mean while it's fine you love your SNES games which I do also most of these posts is "XX-game on the SNES is better, There isn't anything on the Genesis that competes with it." The only reason I actually spoke up is a few people have complained about your posts.

Check out this interesting beta shot of X-Men I found;

X-Men for Genesis has 3 variations.
1. Regular box with cart Made in Japan.
2. Special Edition poster Inside box, with poster and cart Assembled in USA
3. Not For Resale cart that comes in the Sega Genesis X-Men console bundle
I don't have the NFR cart, but I made a gallery of the other two:

Too many eyes on these game review threads, needed to be more concise.
Why on earth are you guys ripping this game apart? Compared to the other X-Men games that were out at the time not including the PC
X-Men NES
X-Men Arcade
X-Men and Spider-man
X-Men on the NES is trash and I played the Spiderman one a few times but it did nothing for me. The arcade game while it blows it away in terms of presentation, sound and visuals it's game play leaves alot to be desired. The bosses are way to overpowered and the enemies are meh I mean how on earth are mini Sentinels working with Magneto anyways? Instead of a healing factor Wolverine has a sonic boom? What is Colossus doing? As small and least intimidating Juggernaut is on the Genesis version ytf does he have a bazooka in the arcade version.

3:34 in Master Mold literally spits out Reavers. :|:|:|
When I read this, I thought "he must have some names mixed up". But then it literally happens in the video. :P
But Master Mold only makes Sentinels aligned with Magneto make all the more sense. He only had to subdue MM to be reprogrammed and then it would pump out all of the Sentinels with selective targets.
-no controllable grappling moves
-huge reliance on the super moves.
-enemies rely on sheer amount of numbers.
-cheap bosses first time I ever got to Magneto I attempted to blast him 2 times with optic beams only to have him nullify them both time with his magnetic beam and then popped my ass with a 3rd one.
Most of Konami's beat em ups haven't aged well. Gimme a Capcom beat em up over that one.
The enemies do swarm and the bosses take a lot of hits. It's a bit of a quarter muncher; the bosses kinda remind me of Smash TV that way. But it's also designed to be played by up to six players, which means it won't work as well for solo play as a game that's only for two players. Every time I played that game in the arcade, there were at least three players. It was pretty popular (at least locally speaking), even after it was getting old.
I never actually saw any Capcom beat 'em up game other than Final Fight in any arcade.
The first time i actually played Final Fight was on the SNES. I didn't see the arcade version until years later. Yes that X-Men was the shit we got the 4 player at a local spot in 92. This is back when X-Men had made a Saturday morning run on Fox Kids so that hyped it up a bit more. There was a Circle K a few miles away that would have an SNK cabinet and a Capcom cabinet. And one day they had Aliens vs. Predator and that game just blew me away. It was a quarter muncher but i felt as if the characters had enough moves to use with out relying on super moves to much. I was playing it a few years ago and discovered a new move.
The Konami classics like TMNT and X-Men came out several years before AvP and D&D, so it's not really surprising that there's a huge difference in complexity. AvP and the two D&D games are the peak of 2D beat em ups.
I do tend to prefer the older Capcom games over the Konami ones, though. I really enjoy Knights of the Round and The King of Dragons.
I still really like the first X-Men game on the Mega Drive and I'm still really crap at it. Some things never change...
Kunio games often have the ability to attack enemies on the ground.
Other than that, mainly the Crime Fighters series(including Violent Storm), but as you said, same development studio as X-men. Oh, and Metamorphic Force, which should be a given, since it uses X-men's engine.
I always enjoyed this game. Would like it more if Archangel was one of the playables, instead of just a call-in, though :p.
This game goes to show my own concept of mediocrity: Not a good game, but not one I regretted playing (in fact I even strongly considered buying it). Just another entry on the console's catalog.
To the 10-12 old me it was a bit hard to understand, but I enjoyed it while I could. At the end, it got tiresome and just forgot about it. I don't even recall if I've ever made it past Juggernaut.
With this game, I guess you just gotta learn how to be cheap with Nightcrawler :p. Actually his diagonal downward kick helps out a great deal against Juggernaut, especially if you land it in a way where you land a good ways past him.
Love some of these twangy gems tracks.
