how did you get involved with the 16bitter?

Well, I'd already owned a Master System and GameGear and some of my friends had Megadrives which I really loved playing but how I really got started was as follows:

I went to the local pub with a group of friends and there was a girl that I liked. Someone told me she had a SEGA so I used that as my fairly lame chat up line, "So, I hear you have a Megadrive?".

The rest is history, we spent many long evenings playing Sonic, Terminator, Bubsy, and Golden Axe. We've been together for 17 years and married for 12 years. We now have have two kids who both love to play SEGA!

So your sister just blew $500-$600 on you? Accounting for inflation, that was like $230,000 back then. She must have been loaded. Is she still? And if so, is she married?

I can't really remember the year I got mine, but first I had the Master Sytem. Then, I used to play MD at friend's house's and eventually got one myself. I remember playing Sonic, Quackshot, Strider, Ecco...

I have many great memories from those days, specially the day a great friend of mine got Street Fighter II SCE. We were all obvioulsy hooked on the game from the arcades, and a home version was a dream! And back then, there was no youtube, and you couldn't really have all the arcade comparison and stuff, and honestly to our eyes it was a perfect conversion. The same playability and stuff. He got it on his 13th/14th birthday - his mom and dad gave him the money to buy the game cos it had come out that week (it was around 90€ - fucking expensive by all means...until Virtua Racing came out). We got out of school and he bought it. He saved it on his backpack and we took the bus to his house. I remember seeing a common friend, who lived near him, and going like "Hey, we should tell him you got IT", and he's all like "No way, he'll never leave my house". We had a good laugh and fuckin "hadoukend" the whole afternoon. :)
Life never got to be ain't as simple or fun as it was back then...

When I was growing up, I got a Genesis model 2 from my grandparents as a 4th birthday present and we played the crap out of Sonic 1 and 2. Later, I got a Genesis 3 (I was born in 1993, so the Genesis was already pretty old when I got it) to keep at my house, and kept getting more games for it. Sadly I lost both of them somewhere during a move and only had my Sonic 2 cart left of my entire Genesis collection. In 2009, I managed to find a Model 1 Genesis, and all of my old games again, so all is better.

I was a Sega fan since before the Genesis. I had a Sega Master System and fell in love with it. I picked up a Genesis in 91 when Sonic was released and the rest is history.

OK, that is one awesome story. Best pick-up line ever.

I used to watch and play with my older cousins on Sonic 1- Sonic & Knuckles and a handful of other games on the Mega Drive when I was about roughly 2. They finally gave the console to me and all their games around 1998 when they got the PS1.

It wasn't until 2000 did I for the first time, see the Model 1 Mega Drive as my cousins only had the Model 2 unit. ;)

Memories. I remember when we used to just call it "The Sega". :D

Exactly, that's what we always called it too : ) It was so different back then,
I didn't know that Nintendo released any other consoles except SNES and
later N64. I always wondered, why they had their 16-bit machine called "Super"
and the more powerful 64-bit machine was just "Nintendo".

I just remember as a kid always playing NES for a few years, the main games I played were TMNT 2 and 3 and Mario Bros 3. Now some guys have nice stories about Christmas etc. getting there Genesis, something memorable I don't. All I know is that I got it very close to when Sonic 1 came out. Wow was I blown away by the graphics, FYI I was like 5 yrs old when I got my Sega so I was literally a toddler playing the NES. Anyways Sonic, Sonic 2 never really played Sonic 3. My favorite games are beat em ups, people can say all they want about repetitiveness but there is nothing better IMO then a visually pleasing responsive beat em up. Heck Simpson's only good game for the longest time was there arcade beat em up. Back on topic....
Streets of Rage 2 <-- never played 1 and 3 as a kid SOR 3's artwork on the cover made me think the game was a joke I wish I had some knowledge back then
TMNT Hyperstone Heist <-- was just awesome for me as a kid I found out later Turtles in Time was superior both great though
The Punisher <-- Never owned this game until I started collecting last year but as a kid rented this game a lot. The Pistol was fricken amazing.
Sports Talk Baseball <-- Played this game more then any game in my life. Me and my bro went 6 years with this game. Did not retire it until All-Star Baseball for N64 now that is saying something.

In Argentina everybody called it like that ("El Sega"), and they still do. We didn't know it as the Genesis or Mega Drive, we all knew it as El Sega (or just Sega), even in the times when Saturns and Dreamcasts were sold in gaming stores here.

Good times...

NES in '86 (I was 6)... and I think I got my Genny in '89 or '90... started with Sonic 1, Mercs, Batman, Rambo III, Thunderforce II, Altered Beast, and a couple other misc games.

I never did have a SNES as a kid... the Genesis was what I fell for after my love for the NES died down a bit. The Genny never disappointed me... I didn't have that 'big' of a collection back then, but I always knew it was a fantastic system (even though deep down I always wanted a SNES as well). There were a couple kids in my neighborhood that had Gennys and I fell in love just by playing theirs. I had seen the SNES at some other peoples houses also.. and thought the Super Mario game was amazing, but overall from what I'd seen, the Genny looked to have more 'serious' games at the time. Lil did I know back then that both systems had their place.

Now as an adult with the freedom to collect at will, I can definitely say the Genny is an amazing system (Model 1 of course) jammin everything in Stereo and solid Composite vid, I'm loving it once again.... the collection is at a mere 28 and the wantlist is at around 50somethin.


Honestly, I can't choose between the NES/SNES/Genesis... they all do their thing really well... but I will say this, my oldschool collection would be 'incomplete' without the Genesis.

oldschool, if you started with Sonic 1, that must have been mid 1991 at the earliest.

I grew up in South Africa and where I lived there was no such thing as a SNES as far as I know. We had the FAMICOM version of the NES (I've never owned a real NES) and then there was the Megadrive I saved up for in the early 90's. Never saw a CD or even heard of a 32X until I moved to the UK in the late 90's. Closest I got to a CD was in the gaming magazine we got shipped in from the UK/US.

Only had a small number of games, most by electronic arts, until I got to the UK and started collecting again. Growing up we mostly did the swap/borrow games from the very few people I knew with the system.

Ummm, nope. It was late '89 or early '90. Sonic came with the system.
