Hello,
I'm interested in getting a Game Gear. There's a few not too expansive on eBay broken...
I can get one for about 20$ with shipping. The screen light up, but there's no picture.
Is there's a way to repair it in this case? Is that hard?
Thanks

I don't know but can't you just find a working GG somewhere? Maybe Amazon? Do you have any local shops that sell retro game?
When I first read "reparations" I thought that you were asking if your Game Gear.... well..hell..nevermind...
;)
As to a GG, yeah, they are a dime a dozen man...About as easy to score as a Genny Model 2 deck.
If I find another anytime soon I'll give you a shout. :)
Thanks for the answers.
I can find a working GG on eBay, at very expansive, but I can.
The problem is, if I buy one, he'll eventually loose his sound and his screen later on... I'll have to repair it anyways.
Luckylli, a few. Sadly, one of them permanently closed, for a reason that I don't know. I still have one not in my city that I discovered yesterday. It's a bit far, but if I can go there, it would be nice.Quote:

I have another that I go a few times, it's next to my city. Very good store, we can still find Genesis games, and others. The weak point is that theirs prices are expansive (But it's still an excellent store). It would be a miracle if they have GG, it's not listed anywhere on their website.
The last one is the most probable to find a GG. It's a huge store that sell everything from every domain. It's like a secondhand trade, you know. It's cheap too. Still a bit far, but excellent. I was able to get Sonic Gems Collection here, a few months ago (GameCube games are hard to find now, so.). This store sell a lot of retro games, maybe GG games... I remember, I saw a GameGear there, a few years ago. I didn't knew why I haven't took it, maybe I wasn't informed about the console. Or the price too expansive? Don't know.
I'll get my Genesis games here, my GenMobile will soon arrive. And I'll bring my console and test them before buy!
Anyways, do you recommand me this console? Apparently, the screen quality sucks. The batteries bugg me a bit too, I'll use reloadables one. But the biggest reason why I'm interested is that with the adaptor, the GG can play MS games.
Do this console worth the money?
Thanks. I just don't have anymore money after the GenMobile for now.:pQuote:

Thanks all.
Game Gear reparations now!
"Very expensive" you said?? They give them away on E-Bay, and the games are dirt cheap as well, am I missing something here??
Maybe he lives in a third world country where Game Gear's are only mentioned in story books and songs of legend. ;)
..You mean like the U.S.?? ;)
"Third World"...tsk tsk...listen to ya ya RACIST!! ;) LOL
Seriously though man, been wondering about something since I first 'lurked' here a while back...
Who/what IS that creature in your avatar?? It's a cool creature, looks vaguely familiar...?
Also, "Guntz", really?? Growing up, we always said the word "gunt" to describe the little fatty paunch above a girl's...err....you get the idea! HA!
The Quebec. :p
The brokens ones, yes. ^^Quote:

But the word "very expansive" mean "very cheap" for many others, you see.
I'll say why, laught at me in your head, but not in your post. ^^
I don't work yet, and I win 5$ per week.
So imagine it was long for me to get my GenMobile on eBay. :p
P.S: I love this forum, because it's a huge community and I get a answer in the next hours or even minutes. Members are nice too. Thanks, this is sweet. ;)
Ahhh..Quebec..We used to go there every summer in the 70s and 80s to go to Parc Safari! :D ;) Hartford/Quebec, yes?
$5 a week? Damn man, you sound like those kids that make Nikes...sorry man.. :(
If you want to swap or do business sometime, let me know, eh? I always have plenty of extra stuff lying around and would be very fair. :)
We would have to keep it SMALL-scale though, as all of this shipping to Canada and Europe lately is kicking my ass! (I always save all of my custom's forms for some odd reason..lol..I have a stack three inches high! ;))
Cheers
I can easylli remember the Parc Safari pub! :p
"C'est l'été au Parc Safari! :D"
XD
I don't even know Hartford, sorry. ^^"
You don't need to be sorry, if I were doing Nikes, I would never have this GenMobile or anything. :p Yes, I haven't told you this, when I was younger, I used to get 2.50 a week. ^^" But I spoked with my parents and we were OK for 5. But this won't go higher anymore, sadly. :mrgreen:Quote:

If you mean seriously, it would be nice, but I can't. I'll have to say my location and it would be... yeah. And you're in the US I think? Europe? I'll also need to speak English and it would be a bit harder.Quote:

But I'll soon ask if I can get a summer job in a video game society, I had a training course (It was so nice) there and maybe they'll accept (I still having difficulties to believe that yes, but whatever).
I never went to the US. It would be nice if I stop buying, buying and buying. I would love to go to NYC.
Right on man! :)
"parents", eh? I'm taking it that you are a younger person that lives at home? No worries man. As far as English, they say that ist hard to learn because of all of the nuances and slang... IE: "bad" and "BAD", etc...
And $5 a week "allowance" is honorable actually, too many kids these days get endless monies and whatever they ask for...it doesnt help to build character or responsibility, thats for sure.
Anyhow man, I'll soon have two Game Gear systems and I already have a pile of games that are doing me no good, so....
I used to know a bit of French, growing up near the border in NY, I used to say THIS to the girls at the deli that I worked at ten years ago:
Je'ma pel masieur cornichon! (Sorry for the spelling!) "Hello my name is Mr. Pickle!" LOL
And as to NYC, everyone should at least SEE it one day for sure. I spent most of my life there.
Cheers
Haha! :P
I'm a teen (Middle, not too young or old.), for sure
English is not so hard for me. ^^ For writing especially.
110% right.Quote:

I know some people who get 15-20$/week. And at Christmas, they can receive like 100-200$ in cash or more!
But at Christmas or on my birthday, I can get more expansive things (Not too much.), the most expansive was my Wii, or Guitar Heroes from my uncle (He used to have a second guitar, so it save a lot of money).
What you mean?Quote:
Anyhow man, I'll soon have two Game Gear systems and I already have a pile of games that are doing me no good, so....
Yes, I understand. :PQuote:

Paris would be nice too one day. :)Quote:

Thanks!
I gotcha man...yep. As to "what I mean", I mean to say that I'll soon have two systems, via trades, and that I have several Game Gear games on-hand for swap...see now?
:)
As to Paris, ehhh... The French all stink and are weak cheese-hoarders, right?? ...At least thats what our 'glorious' former president George W. led us to believe!! ;);)
(JOKING there man, I know its hard to convey via type, especially with the language barrier! :))
Anyhow man, I'm not the most comfortable when dealing with younger people, and certainly NO offense meant to YOU personally, but in our experience younger people can oftentimes be "flaky" or irresponsible when it comes to business...but if you wanted to do business sometime, I am fine with that, just make sure that you have a good head on your shoulders, eh? ;)
:)
Take care...
I bought a gamegear while back from a Value Village, and even though I bought caps for it I still haven't repaired it yet.
It might be best to buy a broken one and then ask someone on here if they can repair it for you if you can't find a working one and aren't very good like I am..
Go play some Shining Force (1). He's one of the characters you come across during the game (and is also one of the best fighters at your disposal).
You call me racist, but sexism is EVEN WORSE! Who's bad now?! You sick, sad and strange little man... ;)Quote:

Aha! I knew you lived in a third world country! /sarcasm :p ;)
Enjoy the stay! We always have room for another Sega fan. Nice to have more Canadians here too. :DQuote:

what do you mean by "it lights up"(or better, ask the seller a bit more details)? is the screen greysh? does it turn off after few secs/instantly?
most of these symptoms are usually caused by faulty capacitors on the mother board, especially the audio board is exposed to these damages (distorted sound, or mute at all).
few weeks ago i bought at 10€ a boxed game gear sold as "not working". in these conditions (he said: no image, no sound, turns off instantly)
i've replaced every capacitor on the motherboard and the audio board and now it works fine :p
capacitors replacement are really cheap, like 2 or 3€ in total for the whole game gear, around 10 or 20cents each :p
BUT if the screen is a bright white block, it could be a different damage,
i had a Game Gear when i was little, a friend of mine killed it using a higher voltage power supply (dumbass ...), the game gear was dead, no sound, no video, just a bright white screen. In that time i hadn't any electronic skills, so i can't say for sure if this kind of damage could be repaired or not.
Well personally I love the Game Gear so I do recommend it. But it also depends on what game consoles you have already. If you have NO consoles now, then the GG would not be the best choice for your 1st console. :)
If I had no consoles at all, I would want a Genesis 1st. :)
But if you just want a fun, somewhat-portable console, the GG is great.
As for the screen-quality, I think it varies from one GG to the next. If u really want a GG I think u should check all the local shops, and test one before u buy it.
The GG screen was always kind of dim, even when the GG was brand-new, so it is best to play GG in the dark! My GG screen is lit somewhat unevenly, so some parts are slightly brighter than others. This really is not a problem though. Also my screen has just a couple small dead (black) spots, so u should really test one before u buy it if u can.
As for batteries, rechargables are nice, b/c u won't have to buy any more batteries ever again. If you don't want to mess w/ batteries at all, just get a cheap wall-plug for the GG. It will be a lot lighter too.
I never tried the MS adapter for the GG yet. It sounds fun but I'd expect some MS games will look much worse and harder to see, b/c the screen is so small and some detail will be lost, compared to playing the MS games on a TV....
try to recap it, it won't suddenly transform in an Oled screen but in the one i've repaired the image was blurrier than the others i had, after it was slightly better than them (nothing exciting, just closer to Nomad blurriness), about the backlight unevenly, i think is normal, his design is stupid, the GG could be like half sized if it hadn't it, it just a fat fluoro tube in the middle, inside a shiny concave reflective plastic. I guess your screen is brigher on the center, and darker on top and bottom, isn't it?
Thanks. I'm not really one to crack it open and recap it, but in the future I'd like to pick up a GG that is all repaired / souped up.
About the uneven backlight, yeah I thought it was normal after all these yrs.
My GG screen looks like it has 3 vertical strips, of slightly different brightness. The left side strip looks darkest, the middle is lighter, and the strip on the right is the brightest. These are still just slight differences though; it's mostly only visible against a solid background, like a black screen, or a blue sky...
