The Saturn 3D pad is bliss. It's not ugly, it's the most beautiful control method ever devised.
I can't think of any games that require it, but a lot of games use it, and it's almost always better with the 3D pad. And NiGHTS sucks without it.

That PS2 adapter doesn't seem to support Saturn analog. Instead, you use the PS2 analog in place of the Saturn digital. Bleh. For the life of me I can't imagine why someone would want to replace the Godly Saturn controller with a PlayStation one. That'd be like swapping out your Genesis with the Gizmondo. OK bad analogy, but the Sega Saturn controllers are amongst the best ever made anywhere.
The one fact that you're all ignoring about SF3 is that it does not use a grid in the traditional sense. You're actually traveling over terrain in this one rather than just moving on a grid. So there.
I'm gonna have to pop in my copy because I barely remember. I do remember that the graphics are quite sharp.

I think you should get both a 3D pad and a v.2 digital pad.
The Saturn analog pad is about 7.12 times better looking than the Dreamcast pad.
The only reason I sorta disagree is because I don't like circley pads...
But I do agree with you on one thing-It looks comfy (with the L and R buttons in the back and being held like a gamecube controller.

The Saturn 3D knob thing doesn't feel like an actual analogue control to me - rather, it feels more like a 3D D-Pad. For example, I can't play Daytona USA CE with the 3D pad as there seem to be three analogue ranges: neutral, middling, SWERVE. In games with only 3D movement (not 'analogue' in the sense the further you press, the faster you go or whatever) it's great. Like NiGHTS.
I think the Dreamcast controller's stick did it best - with the spring in the bottom, you are actually pushing against something, it makes finicky movements that much easier.
