As the title says, I scored me a Dreamcast. For $20 American, no less. It came with the power cable, composite inputs, one controller, and Sonic Adventure.
So... what now? Any good game suggestions? Are these things moddable as well? Can they display in 480p at the very least?
If you've got an HDTV, then get a VGA cable for the DC. It allows you to play (most) DC games in 640x480 progressive, giving a razor sharp image.
Yes, they're moddable, but I don't know many details. My DC is an American console which came pre-modded when I bought it, so it plays anything I throw at it. From what I understand, most (older) DC's will play import games and backups without the need for modding, but with a boot-disk at most.
As for games, there's just too many to choose from... Sonic Adventure is a good start, and from my collection I'd at least recommend Grandia II, Ikaruga, Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure 2, Soul Calibur, and the huge amount of great Capcom fighters available on the system: Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter III Third Strike, just to name a few.
There's already been a few threads on this forum listing the essential Dreamcast games, someone else might be able to point you at them.
Most Dreamcast games can support 480p, but some games have that mode locked, that lock can be removed hacking their iso (so, not on original games), many isos on the web are hacked already
if your dreamcast is an early model you don't need a mod at all. Just burn a iso and put the disc it in your DC if the iso you're downloading is "AutoBoot". if not you have to download the Boot Disc iso.

You can play practically all Dreamcast games in VGA if you use the DC-X adapter - or backups.
Yeah, but not entirely all. That link shows which games work in VGA by default, which ones need to be patched (either with DC-X or backups), and which ones won't work at all. For example, one game in my collection that is sadly completely incompatible is Bangai-O. Non-VGA compatible DC games may be a small minority, but it's always good to make sure in advance.
If you get Daytona USA 2001 make sure to get a racing wheel!

Yea Marvel Vs Capcom 2 is a must(best fighter ever made), however I would get the PS2 remake of 3rd Srike instead(don't get the DC version). The remake(Street Fighter Anniversary Collection)has improved hit detection, and a Alpha esq grading system, not to mention It's a compilation disc, so you also get the special version of SF2 as well(Hyper Street Fighter 2 anniversary Edition). Also suprisenly it can be had super cheap(you can get a brand new, still factory sealed one for only $20, and that price includes the cost of shipping.Quote:

When I was thinking about buying one of these new in box... I looked up the prices of the games and was offset.
I decided to go with the PS2 instead... way larger base of games and the prices were more acceptable imo.
If it hasn't been suggested already, I would definitely grab Tokyo Racer (if you're into Racers)... it's bland in that it only has ONE track, BUT... the gameplay is amazing and the physics are really solid.

To burn bootlegs, you just need to download an ISO in ".cdi" format and download the Padus DiscJuggler trial. The trial is NOT time limited, just minimum burn speed limited (which is what you want anyway). Download the .cdi, double click, click burn in DiscJuggler, say "yes" to the speed restriction, say "no" if it asks to "fix" the file (it will in fact mess it up), and enjoy. Don't get impatient, DiscJuggler appears to be frozen for a few seconds and then starts to burn.
To get started, coolrom.com, DCISOZONE.com, and the snesorama.us forums should get you going.

Is it true that Dreamcasts are really easy to load emulators onto? CAN they run emulators, seeing as the homebrew scene is so robust?
There's tons of cool homebrew stuff for Dreamcast. Check out snesorama. (Search "Dreamcast masterlist snesorama" in google)
I've got a complete Neo Geo collection (Most run at full speed), a full Game Boy Color collection, a full NES collection, and a complete Genesis collection for Dreamcast.
And there's all kinds of cool stuff.
Like a Scummvm emulator (For playing classic LucasArts adventure games).

Last time I checked, moddable=able to modify to play bootleg games. I basically said "you don't need it, just do this". I guess I forgot about retarded mods like 50/60hz switches that aren't needed on the DC if you're playing from a CD-R since any game worth playing is usually patched.Quote:

Moddable = able to modify, period. Playing import games usually requires modification on most consoles, as well as playing bootleg games. But regardless of Waterfaller's intentions, he simply did not ask how to burn CD-Rs. You're literally assuming that the question "is this thing moddable?" equals "how do I burn CD-Rs?". Before things potentially get out of hand, I wanted to say that even though I didn't even think of burning ISOs to CD-Rs, a friend of mine said that's the number one thing I should do, and I may just do. What I was mostly interested in was what mck said, about running emulators on the DC. How does THAT work? They're just run off of a CD-R? Are savestates saved in a VMU?
Another question: I do want to get a VGA adapter definitely for it. How do I get sound? I see there's a PC audio port next to the PC video input. Would I use an auxiliary audio cord for that for sound?

There are quite a few good emulators available for Dreamcast, sadly they're mostly limited to 8-bit consoles and computers. Neither TG-16, SNES, nor Genesis are perfectly emulated. Neo Geo however is. Neo Geo CD that is.
The best emulators would be Nester DC v6 (NES), SMSplusDC (SMS/GG), DCGNUboy (GB/GBC), and Neo4All/CD (NGCD).

LOL, it's definitely not for everyone. Outtrigger was originally a Naomi title, which should explain the cartoony, arcade-like nature of the game. It was AM2's attempt at an arena FPS. It's a pretty capable FPS, if a bit limited. But it's fun to jump in for a few quick matches and another reason to justify a keyboard and mouse purchase for your Dreamcast.Quote:
