Nintendo still makes a hefty profit off those old NES games. As for NEC they don't even do anything with the TG16 anything.

Licensing is a lot different from selling rights... (though the latter is more like what they did with TecToy I think -or just a very open ended license).
Tonka was more like MaJesco.
Though now it's more of a moot point as there's no patent contention anymore: clones are perfectly legal. Though not so for copyrighted stuff (the Sega name, and built-in games), though in the case of Brazil, I think the copyright laws are a bit grayer on that.
And it's a rel shame Sega hadn't used Tonka back in 1986... they did a FAR, FAR better job of marketing (TV and print ads, but ESPECIALLY box art and packaging -compare 1986/87 to 1988 and later releases), too bad they didn't come in until after the critical '86/87 period of direct competition with Nintendo had passed.
SoA didn't have decent (let alone good) marketing until '89 when Katz arrived.
What amazes me still about all these clone things, is that real hardware is often much cheaper! I can get a MD easley for 10 euro. WHy would I get a firecore thingy?
Especially considering the FireCore hardware is pure crap that's worst than unlicensed clones. I tell you, if I were at Sega right now, I'd revoke the license from AtGames and give it to either Yobo or Hyperkin(or both), since their cloned Genesis hardware makes use of proper reverse-engineered hardware with minor compatibility problems(nothing near as bad as the FireCore shit), but no major sound flaws like the horrible emulator used by AtGames on that stupid Titan ARM core. The only flaws I found were PSG that was too loud or the sound circuitry just being plain crappy and causing distorted FM Synthesis and practically inaudible PSG(the latter applies only to their earlier efforts: GN Twin for Yobo and SG/FC Dual Action for Hyperkin).
But yeah, these FireCore shits are about $50 and I can get a Genesis Model 1 or 2 for less than that(and there are a fair bit of 'em in my part of Canada, even though most of the systems are either VA7 Genesis Model 1s or pre-VA2 Genesis Model 2s, which have hissy, distorted, low-quality sound). The most expensive Genesis I saw in my area was a VA7 Model 1 selling for $35. I'd rather spend that money on the original hardware rather than poorly-made clone running on very bad emulation. If the emulation was up to the level of Kega Fusion, then it wouldn't be such a big deal. And speaking of the emulator in the FireCore shit, where's the emulator located? Within the glop-top or the ROM with the built-in games?
This thing is crappier than the firecore. At least the firecore lets you play genesis cartridges, is region free including EURO games, and lets you use original genesis controllers. Three very important things.
That's not just region freem but automatic region compensating as region lock is software not hardware (unlike TMSS), and it's dependent on the game detecting the region. SOem older clones had region switches built-in like the scorpion 16, but not usuallly PAL/NTSC switches too.
Well that sucks. But would it actually be possible to replace AtGames' shitty emulator? That's my question; is the emulator replaceable in any way or are FireCore owners stuck with that garbage? And where exactly is the emulator located, within the glop-top that contains the ARM core or within the ROM that contains the built-in games?
Jeez, I think I should learn how to program in Assembly.
how expensive would it cost for these clone companies to replicate the genesis 100%. I mean seriously, why can't they just do that?
I honestly think, they are not trying hard enough :wtf:
....
Yes. They are assholes. They could make a genesis that has a genesis/32x slot, an SMS slot, and the sega cd built into one small unit, and a given, all games playable), full region free(Americas, Europe, Asia), and have some preloaded games that look and sound how they are supposed to(Alien Soldier for instance), and some actual GOOD WORKING new controllers. Instead they just want to be assholes releasing virtually the same flawed fucked up shit over and over with slight variations attempting to trick people into buying into the hype and buy it only to later be pissed off and regret their purchase, and worse, seeing it going for half the price they payed a few months later.
How about THE ultimate SEGA console?
It can play Master System games, Genesis games, 32X games, AND Game Gear games, and its disc drive can read Sega CD, Saturn, and Dreamcast games. And can play games from ANY region?
I'd plunk down a good chunk o' change for that.
