i just got my old copy of mario rpg and plugged it in i know my super nintendos been in the closet at least 4 years. anyways why couldn't they of turned sonic 3d blast into an rpg to rival what nintendo was doing, genesis had the graphical power and they could have made a real good story to go with it. i dunno what do you guys think

wow i just looked it up gamespot only gave it 3 stars, i never really liked new sonic games, playing sonic on anything but a sega system feels just wrong like a taboo or something.
I agree with the OP on this one, a Sonic RPG for Genesis would have been nice along with a release of SegaSonic for 32X and Sonic Xtreme for Saturn, talk about missed opportunity; and you really can't count Sonic Chronicles since the core people behind Sonic: Yuji Naka, Hirokazu Yasuhara, and Oshima Naoto had no involvement and really haven't had any inolvement with Sonic since around 2001 when the whole old SEGA tanked and Sonic series starting sucking hard.

Probably would have been a good idea for their Japanese market (possibly more so for the CD format -I'm not totally clear on how hot the Sega CD was, but if the figures I've seen at ~2 million for Japan/Asia are accurate, that's a huge portion of MD owners).
Not sure how significant for North America, but RPGs were fairly popular (I think FFIII was #1 for that generation, SMRPG perhaps #2). Europe would probably have been inconsequential given how extremely niche the market was: surprising Sega ended up releasing as many RPGs there as they did. (given Nintendo released pretty much none -including FFIII/VI and SMRPG)

Sonic and RPG do not mix IMO... unless its an action RPG with no meaningful menues and no staticness, fully dynamic gameplay
I personally don't really see a Sonic game working as a full blown RPG (I can't say I've played the DS game to any significant extent), but perhaps like Cadash instead, RPG elements mixed into a platformer.

After looking at the Mario RPG game, I passed... so I'm gonna have to say that I'd pass on a Sonic RPG as well.
RPG to me = Morrowind or a myriad of Hack n Slash type Adventure games... or Zelda/etc.
not Mario or Sonic, they'll always be platformers to me

As for Sonic RPGs, there is another and it's more of an action RPG/adventure fighting hybrid game:
Sonic Battle on the GBA; that one actually developed by Sonic Team too. (in 2003)
