not me, I liked it.

Never liked the Golden Axe series, not the MD ports nor the Duel game on Saturn. I had one of those 3-in-1 carts and Golden Axe was on it and I played it a few times but it's behind me now.
I like the Sega CD classics version of the part one
for the best in the series is first Golden Axe :)
I vote Golden Axe II.
I had a quick go of II last night and god was it bad. I am actually quite sad it doesn't live up, because it was a favourite in the household (the first game more so). Perhaps it was only ever good as a two-player game.
It is a lot harder than I remember, and it everything becomes a run and bump fest. Got dull very quickly.
On th bright side we still have SOR which will stand the test of time.
GA1 arcade... just epic until today
I was more of a Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder guy. That game is fun with 2+ players.

Golden axe 2 is the best by far. Golden axe 1 is very good, but still a bit "alpha version". Golden axe 2 is a polished version of 1 with better physics. Background design is worse in 2 than 1, but the gameplay, magic and OST is much better. Golden axe 3 is rubbish. Arcade Revenge of Death adder is not a golden axe game because its physics, gameplay and characters-enemy design has nothing to do with a Golden axe game. It is totally broken, just an standard beat'em up.
I'm a big fan of Golden Axe 3. It was a fun game. It had an interesting move set, branching paths, a good amount of enemies, multiple characters to play with, and the duel mode, although different, was still enjoyable.
Frankly, none of the home GA games were bad. I enjoyed all of them quite a bit.
Golden Axe Arcade is one of the most polished games i ever played! It's so imersive and addictive to play. The art+music are just PERFECT!!!
Golden Axe MD port:
+: plays faster than the Arcade version
+: add a filler Last stage
+: Duel Mode.
-: lack of some Enemies moves like the back attack of the skeletons, throw attack from the bosses, Death Adder running...
-: lack of background details and on some levels, poor tile drawing like in the stage 2 that looks like anything except a turtle LOL:
http://i.imgur.com/s9O50CP.pnghttp://i.imgur.com/97mx4vx.png
This makes me thing in how good and accurate could be a 20Mb+ version of Golden Axe using the technique of load the background directly on VRAM in real time like Joe and Mac, Sonic 3D Blast, Toy Story...
Golden Axe II:
+: improved the controls a lot and now you see more differences betwen the characters like Gilius running faster than the other 2 and Tirys jumping higher.
+: The Enemie IA was improved a lot!
-: The enemie position in this game is the worst thing about this game! In the first one, you can finish in about 15 minutes and was perfectly paced. You never be bored during the gameplay! In Gaxe 2, level one is very good designed, fast paced and very fun. The second stage... OH GOD! After you enter the Ruin, you are simply bombarded with skeletons! If you take into that Gaxe 2 Skeletons are beasts, more inteligent and tougher to kill than on the first one. These fucking overpowered skeletons make the game boring and slow the gameplay.
-: Like the first one, Golden Axe II sufer of ridiculous low number of tiles to draw the backgrounds. Stage 2 is the ugliest stage of the game.
OFF/mistery: I suspect that there's a lost stage or a alternate or extended stage 2 during the development. There's no other explication to stage 2 looks so rushed, bad drawed and incomplete.
Just look to this prototype footage:
http://i.imgur.com/bPgoMhu.jpg
This background, Bizarrian+Minotaur palette simply doesnt exist in the released game! Even the Fire Dragon looks a bit different than the final one.
When you see to the Game Map, you see that between stage 1 and stage 2, you see a cave entrance, similar to the background from the prototype footage:
http://i.imgur.com/hWgz4bN.png
If you play the Golden Axe II beta, you got automatically a stage select and you got 9 stages to select. 2 more stages the final one! Number 9 is the duel background and the number 8 is a corrupted background. A lost stage? A alternate stage? Mistery...
Golden Axe III
+: A lot of moves
+: Multiplayer moves (combination of attack and magic)
+: Special Moves (360º+B+C or >,<,>+B+C)
+: New generation characters
+: Finally we got 2 layer backgrounds (Gaxe II use the second layer background in the Dragon's Throat)
-: The Bizarrians are useless in this game
-: Backgrounds are MORE rushed than the first 2 Gaxe!
-: Enemies now block your attacks
I think all 3 Golden Axe are still fun and playable to this day and I would rank them as follows.
1. Golden Axe 3 is the best on Genesis. By far it has the most moves and stages of the 3. The sprites and enemy ai is also the best by far. The music is different but very well done. Some of the art design is a little weak and some of the backgrounds are lazy and not good for a 93' release. I will say they aren't all bad and there are routes in the game where you can avoid the worst of the backgrounds. They should have also added some more enemy variety. Seeing the 3 basic enemy types repeated hurt the diversity. 5 basic enemy types would have gone along way. The magic attacks in the game are such a letdown unless you do the team magic attacks and I'm sure most people don't even know they exist. I think the biggest weakness of the game is that it was to ambitious for an 8-meg cart. Oh yeah the mounts suck!
2. Golden Axe 2 this is a slight improvement over the first in most ways. The music is my favorite of the trilogy. The art direction is my favorite of the trilogy. The combat is much more smooth compared to the first and being able to throw enemies into each other is a welcome addition. The graphics are only the slightest bit better then 1. This is a letdown and especially for a sequel to a blockbuster hit. Golden Axe 2 needed an 8-meg cart cart to work with. It was a Dec 91' release 2 yrs after the original but used the same 4 megs. I think they did the best they could under the circumstances.
3. Golden Axe 1 Easily the most impressive upon relative release date. That being said it was an 89' release and the genre came along way in a few years. The game shows its age compared to the other 2 by far. Stiff controls, really dated graphics and the sound effects cut the music. I can't imagine anybody new to the series not ranking this one dead last. It definitely has the advantage of nostalgia over the other 2 in the series.
In conclusion, the series was letdown by a lack of cart size. If they had given GA 2 an 8-meg cart like they should have it would have been a blockbuster sequel to the original smash. They didn't which didn't raise the bar enough and this was again repeated for GA 3. They are all still fun and I consider GA 2 and 3 to be better then most beat em ups of the 16-bit era. If the visuals rivaled the Snes Knights of the Round and King of Dragons a litter better I think they would be held in much higher regard overall.
Humm comparison between the game? ok
GA1 (arcade) = Like i'm already said is the best one.... by far have the most inspired levels, amazing artwork, best soundtrack, cool characters and etc..
also the gameplay is very inovating for the time, is the first beat 'em up that's allowed you dash/runing + attack, cool combo system and very challenging.
GA2 = Tunned/scaled down version of the first game, very inferior in grafics and art, but still have amazing soundtrack and is fun to play.
GA3 =Lose all originality of the series and became a generic beat 'em up game. Ugly graphics and artwork, some level is so simple and poor that make your eyes bleed. Too Big and boring sometimes, but have good music and cool new magic system and alternate routes.
GA2 (arcade) = Second best game of the series but sadly comes too late.. and dosen't does the same impact of the original.
Last I played this series, I had the most fun with the third one.
I'm telling you guys, GAIII just gets better with time. Had that game had a larger cart size and a Western release, I think it would have been great. It's a fun game.
I am not a huge fan of the Golden Axe series more so the Streets of Rage but I have been playing Golden Axe III a bit over the past few weeks on and off learning the move sets and soaking it all in. GAIII feels special, as something I'm not meant to have because it was originally only released in the far east and on the Sega Channel in the states that I never used. To me initially GAIII feels equal to the first and second but I need to play more. I got GAIII because I wanted to have the whole series (on the Genesis) and the series is a legendary part of Sega's history.
Edit: Funny thing, the copy of Golden Axe II with manual and case I own is a Mega Drive copy and I have no idea how I gained possession of it?
Edit2: I like whipassgaming take on GAIII.
Why, Golden Axe 3 of course! A pretty big moveset for a beat'em up, nice music and good replayability, what's with the path selection and whatnot.
Also, since we are also naming the GA games we don't like here, I loathe 2 for being like 1, only with horrible pacing and a huge difficulty spike.
All Golden Axe games suffered from terrible hit detection. They never felt quite right.
That said, I always enjoyed the art style of the games, and was drawn to that.
THIS is a terrible hit detection:

Golden Axe is just ok.
Wow that's bad. What a waste of hardware ugh...
At least the golden axe port was... okish.

Oh, come on!Quote:
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Barone again.
I just think you're exaggerating (even more when you say it's as bad as Double Dragon's). Maybe you find the hit boxes too big or too small in your opinion, but the hit detection is consistent for the most part.
But I'd like to see you point some in-game situations which are examples of such "terrible" hit detection.
Golden Axe hit detection was great. I don't know what anyone is taking about. I'm a goddamn monster in that game.
I'm also having a hard time trying to figure out what exactly he's talking about. I don't remember ever reading a complaint about that but maybe he has some examples to share with us.
GA2's hit deteciton is improved over GA1. GA1's vertical reach is very limited iirc, at least on the arcade
Last time I played GA3 I hated combat, but don't remember the details.
Are you replying to me, or someone else?

I agree with his take on it. Compare it to Streets of Rage, Final Fight, TMNT, Bad Dudes, and even Water Margin, and Golden Axe just falls short when it comes to it's wonky hit detection.
I like Golden Axe for nostalgia purposes and the Conan setting it has, but it's a wasted potential both in gameplay and presentation for most of the time. Revenge of Death Adder could give the best GA could offer, and that's why it's the best of the series and a great beat 'em up arcade.
.
The arcade version of GA was better than the MD port, although a little bit sluggish compared to. The port lacked many things and aged pretty bad, although for the time it was one of the best arcade ports for getting most of it right.
GA2 improved over GA mechanics, it's a bit uninspired on graphics and design, but it's pretty good.
While GA3 is the best of the console, plays way better and has many features over the others, although suffers from the same lack of effort on graphics and design.
This goes against my opening post, but hey that was six years ago, but I think Avlon's right, at least to a degree - the hit detection in all three GA titles aren't that stellar. I miss enemies and have to line up my attacks perfectly sometimes on the same line of field to get it to connect. It does get jarring sometimes.
Hit detection was a bit wonky, had to be real close to attack enemies, but nothing that would make the game unbearable. It didn't bother me too much.
