2010 European Mega Drive Championship

As the other (albeit quieter) half of the Mega Drive Championship Administration, I would like to chuck my hat in the ring.

Irrespective of whether AEther was trying to "poke" Mr Smith, irrespective of how much experience certain members feel they have in organised computer combat, irespective of anyones gripes, moans and feelings of injustice, this IS the way Mr Smith and I run this thing, this IS the way we have gotten results (not in a 2-player sense) in the past, and this IS the way we have taken Mega Drive Championshippery from 3 lads sat on a bedroom floor to Nuremburg in the space of 10 years.

The tournaments are designed so like-minded people can come together, compete but, above all, enjoy themselves. Sitting at a keyboard moaning abut the workings of the Golden Axe 1-player is in no way WHATSOEVER conducive to people having fun. Let us not, in spite of how strangely hell-bent certain people seem on winning, lose sight of the fact that the Mega Drive Championships are hopefully going to continue to move towards a long term goal of being more and more awesome every year.
I would ask, with little expectation, that people remember this, the next time they want to rant about imaginary injustices.

I shall be in Nuremberg as one of the administration, and I very much look forward to seeing everyone there, in the spirit of friendship and 16-bit awesomeness.

Geez.. why does it need to go this way..

I do understand totally the feeling that there have been too many unreasonable complains about (lack of) fairness from this side of the border, and even if I am the minority between Atlantic and Spanish borders, I agree with the administration in that it's nonsense.

On the other hand, I think there's a general lack of understanding towards the mindset of people who are used to competitive gaming.
Heck, pretty much the whole new wave of Portuguese players descends from the competitive fighting game scene. Me, Dário, Ferdi, Luís, Hugo, Armando, even Alberto himself.. the list goes on. We are used to gripping the minimal detail of a game to make the best of it, and to spend hours on it.
That's our way of having fun, and it's an accomplishing feeling to found ourselves improving any little thing.
To be quite honest, I remember reading that SF2 was a top-difficulty game to play for Mega Drive on the MDC site. And well.. SF2 is a complete joke near other top fighters, being so ridiculously basic to play, train and to make strategies. I'd even say it is 0.5 out of 20 in terms of deepness on a fighting game scale.
Hell, I've trained Soul Calibur 3 for about 15 times more time than Mega Drive as a whole and even so I get much better results on here. This is how far the difference goes, just how used to put effort on games these people you're dealing with are. Unfairness feeling aside, it's a fact that the will to have everything thought out is instinct rather than competitiveness which the complexity of those games requires.
It doesn't hurt to try to explain though, but I do understand that it's almost untolerable for anyone who views games are pure relaxing fun rather than pleasing hardwork fun.

With this in mind, I will -repeat- that I am only defending competitiveness to an extent - I do NOT condone the unfairness feeling AT ALL.

I accept that a lot of the Portugese players come into the Mega Drive Championships on the back of having played in the competetive gaming scene for a long time, but what everyone (and I am by no means merely focussing on Portugal here) needs to remember is that Mr Smith and myself have had 10 years of organising competitive Mega Drive Championships, and we know our stuff. We know how to maneuver certain things into certain places to ensure that everybody has a good time.
We place the enjoyment of the competitions above any ammount of in-depth competitiveness.

This is not to say however that people can't be competetive. Since the Anglo-Irish competition, Team England (of which Mr Smith and I were a part) have relished the Smack-Talk, and relished the edge certain results can give. What we've found though is that all sense of fun and friendly smack-talk is overshadowed when people begin fussing and moaning about what are, in effect, trivial details such as which team players the 1players first, how many stars are used in SF2, how many controllers (6-button or otherwise) are used. These are thing the administration makes decisions on with the best interests of everyone in mind. To have to go on and on about it subsequently is wearysome and something we can do without.

The complaint regarding SF2 is a pointless one too. You (Ravsieg) say it is a joke of a fighter, too basic and too easy. For a member of a team which seems hell-bent on winning and precious little else, this view confuses me. Why would it being too easy be an issue? Everyone else views it as fun and manageable, which is surely the point. You can play it and so can everyone else, which makes it a level-playing field, which in turn opens up the competitiveness which people seem to crave.
We have experimented with games such as Mortal Kombat, and to be honest, most people would sooner stick their head in a food-blender than play Mortal Kombat on the Mega Drive.

Like I have said before, the Administration try and make the whole thing as fair and as fun as possible (and, in this instance, Sebastian is going all out to ensure this is an amazing event), and we do it for absolutely zero return, financially or otherwise. So all we ask is that we get some co-operation from people (and I stress, I am not picking on Portugal here) for whom we go out of our way to organise this thing for.

Leave the trivial details to us, please don't question our game picks and please, please just trust in our judgement. We have, after all, been doing this for 10 years.

despite I do not agreed with some points that Chris have said, I prefer have that conversation with him and all the others who make part of this team that are the megadrivechamps in Nuremberg, since a public forum don't seen to me as the best place for an inteligent conversation. a forum is for fun, poke and trash talk!!

but just my 2 cents... I do not starting organizing tournaments and events yesterday... I do this since my 14/15 years. I have 29!

I do understand you're very experienced on organizing these events, emphasizing the relaxed fun over in-depth fun. However, some of the people here are also experienced BUT with the opposite priority. What I personally am trying to do is to give some pointers that could make the tournament incorporate some more in-depth competition factors.
However, the resilient message that's been given by the administration (even if it's wrong or unintentional, it's still the message you're giving) is that your way is the "right" good way and what we're saying is the "wrong way" of doing things. Yet, what I'm trying to explain is that both ways are ensured fun - just with different mentalities. There seems to be a major resistance in accepting this fact, saying that fun can only be gain by relaxed playing and that's the only acceptable way to play.
And I'll be straight here to you, resilient refusal to aknowledge the clearly obvious passes as prejudice. I do believe from what I know of both of you, that this is NOT the way you are or what you mean to do. I am just voicing what it looks like.

The star speed at SF2 is anything but trivial. The result of a match, and its quality and strategy planning is probably going into a 180 degree turn.

You missed my point about SF2 completely though.
I NEVER, EVER intended to say it's a bad game to choose or that it shouldn't be played. Not even close to that, geez. The game is awesome, the best MD has to offer, it's loads fun to play.. so it's a goddamn "HELL YEAH". Mentioning it had one single purpose : to illustrate the abysmal difference in depth both parties are used to deal with, both organizingly and playingly, which explains a lot of the issues that have been surfacing lately.

And I take it as insulting I'm being thrown into the sack of "Team Portugal". Since I am not part of it, I should be able to voice my own opinions separately without having to relate both things. I do not share most of their views, I am acting for myself without checking on them first, I do not accept taking responsability of what the 3 of them say and I don't want them to take responsability for what I say either.

Oh, and I love all 4 of the Mortal Kombats.

Well, that being said, I have to say you'll always have my co-operation without doubt. I am on the same boat in that Mega Drive competitions should be united so that we could grow together, and since I want them to grow more and more and more aswell I'd have no interest on pursuing my own way - Mr Smith knows this as I have debated ways to increase national awareness for the global good with him a number of times.

Surely, there are times I feel I need to come defend myself when I feel I'm being misunderstood or disregarded. But the majority of my interventions on this thread, mails and whatever else are solely intended to give my 2 cents on how to improve OUR competitions both organizingly and competitively. I do stress this paragraph, and hope that what I post is never taken misunderstandingly as complaining, moaning or obstructing.

Not at all, I am not saying our way is the right way and your way is the wrong way, I am merely saying that it is THE way it is going to be. It's up for discussion if anyone wants it, but, ultimately, it is the way it is going to be.

Ravsieg, I apologise if I implied you were in Team Portugal. I am aware you're not, as have of course been involved in the fixtures, team selections etc etc. I am by no means taking you as the mouthpiece of Team Portugal.

However, having said all this, I am disturbed that you like any of the 4 Mortal Kombats. They're as enjoyable as a heart-bypass.

Yes, I know we (and I stress Daniel and I) have been in constant communication with you from the begining of the Europeans, but all I stress is that the admin consists of the two of us. The admin takes and thrives upon the input of yourself, Dario, Sebastian etc etc, but ultimately, yes, these tournaments are mine and Daniels, insomuch as we started them, brought them to this point, and organise all events in accordance with the host nation (you - 2009) (Sebastian and co - 2010). We are neutral insomuch as we have no involvment with Team England anymore.

I am in agreement with you sir, we should save such conversations for when we are face to face, in Germany.

well, actually, having someone solely on the administration side without actively playing in the event sure makes organizing and keeping things running a lot easier. As sad as I am that I didn't qualify for the German team for this event, it definitely helped as in that I can now fully devote my energies on organizing things here in Germany, and leave all the training to Tobias, Richard, and Valerian. For me, it's fun first, always has been, always will be! And I'm positive that we will have plenty of this once the tournament rolls around ;)

And considering trash talking, well, we gonna whoop your ass this time around, no matter what! home advantage ftw :ok:
