I switched from Ubuntu 9.10 to XP again a couple months ago. For a while it was okay, but resizing my Windows partition to fit Debian in messed up XP's boot sequence, now it can't boot. Easeus Partition Manager had an error.
So, I'm back with Ubuntu, and I like the new changes.
After having both my computers crash last month I was very close going that route. I have a third computer lying around that I think I will give it a try with one of these days.
This is why you dual boot with two HDD's.
what about the reliability and security of MAC OSX

And then there's the jurassic Linux crowd that tells you "You have to learn the shell/bash/console/whatever!".. GTFO.
But vocal Apple MacOS advocates easily take the cake for being the worst douchebaggery has to offer.
Windows does what it does well. The only flaw in it is that by maintaining legacy support, they never scrapped the kernel design for a permissions based Unix environment.
Windows 7 is excellent, and an example of what pure refinement can be achieved when they don't try to reinvent the wheel again.
Ubuntu gets shit on by some of the hardcore Linux scene because it introduces Noobs and doesn't force them to learn the fundamentals of the OS. Others see it as a significant success against the Windows mindset of doing things...which is to say, 'ass backwards' compared to every other OS.
Personally, I can see Chrome OS launching later this year putting more pressure on the market shift with the low end netbooks & tablets, assuming tablets don't just shift to Android instead. I expect Windows to be knocked down into the 70-80% range for usage.

I wasn't arguing in favour of cloud computing, just against paying for bloatware. But like it or not most end-user activities are moving into the realm of CC.
With freeware web browsers, media players, security tools, image manipulators and word processors, which cover most of end-users' needs, the next logical step is a mass-appealing free OS that seriously takes on Microsoft's undeserved market reign. OEMs are a part of the problem too.
I really love apple's Legendary Quality, My iPhone is amazing along with my "AWARD WINNING" MacBook.
Why is it ridiculous to pay for an OS nowadays, but you yourself use Windows 7??
As I see it, the issue is clear, the only thing Windows does, that other OSs don't, is
games. I can barely come up with something else, that you need Windows for.
Professional stuff like 3D modelling and video editing, all right, maybe that. There are still
3D programs for Linux. And video editing software is really advanced atm. I do all my
video editing in Linux and I'm running a website which has lots of animations and video
advertisements.
And once in a while you can still run into some stuff that has problems with drivers on
Linux, but it's getting better every day. Linux even supports games better now. Some
time ago it was mostly through difficult to use wine, but with that new PlayOnLinux
frontend for wine, things got a mile better. Diablo II even runs better on wine
than on my WinXP, which is ready for "format c:" atm.

I'm running dual boot on a single drive on my acer one with no problems. Ubuntu 10.04/XP. Just keep in mind you have to have xp installed first then Linux. I'd wipe xp but I use it for burning only. Iy may be possible to edit grub to get your windows back.
Well to the OP, booting a Windows Repair session via a USB key, boot cd, or install disc would give access to a command prompt where you can try running a Bootrec.exe command or whatever. BCDEdit in Vista/7, if the automated repair tool doesn't fix it.
It overwrites grub with the windows loader, allowing it to mount and boot windows, but I don't know the circumstances of your issue.
As to the 'Reliability and security of MAC OSX'
It's a permissions based OS, that's the only security it has.
It's still not as secure as Solaris, a true BSD, or a clean Linux distro.
Why? It incorporates 3rd party software like everybody else, but Apple maintains a slower upkeep on patching vulnerabilities as they come up.
The beachball of death isn't uncommon for Macs. It's certainly less common than a poorly maintained windows system, but still much more prevalent than a Solaris/BSD/Linux environment.
The argument is stupid, it all comes down to what you define as 'Security', because as unlikely it is that a malicious program will gain access to kernel level in OSX, it's still historically more likely that the Safari browser will get exploited into giving up personal information. Those who preach about Apple don't know any better, they've been repeating a PR campaign's rhetoric as if it were rock solid. Nothing ever is but this group is the only 'tech' culture to not grasp this concept, or at least 'admit it' when trying to convert others to their choice.
Pulstar is right about traditional OS's. Having a feature rich environment to do tasks isn't as necessary these days, and the circle jerking is pointless. Cloud based computing is more relevant to people than ever before, and more practical to the way things are going. Google Chrome OS is a perfect example of this idea, it will launch the end of this year, and is essentially just the web browser.
