Don't get me wrong Sonic 1 is a good game...but it feels like a chore to play. On the other hand I love Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 D Blast is slightly lame.
Don't you prefer the 8-bit games too? (I really need to play those more)
Anyway, not the whole game, but Marble Zone always feels like a chore to me, apparently labyrinth zone is annoying too (Haven't gotten that far). Sonic 2 is more fast and furious, though some of the later levels get cheap: Mystic Cave Zone looks cool and I like the music, but it really has some cheap stuff, oil ocean can be annoying, but perhaps mostly due to Mystic Cave wearing you down. I didn't mid metropolis Zone as much as others, but I think it's also mostly due to being worn down by previous levels.(I don't think I've gotten past that, maybe my brother has)
I still like Sonic 3&K most. (save feature, replay, and infinite continues all top it off nicely too)
What's "cheap" in Mystic Cave Zone?
My only problem with Sonic 2 (as well as S3&K) is that I've always found it to be a bit too easy.
Maybe all the spikes?
I don't know, Mystic Cave was always pretty breezy for me. If you ask me, Oil Ocean Zone is the cheapest level in the game. Every time you get some good speed built up, one those damn dirty seahorses gets you. I love the music though, so it's all good.
It was the opposite case for me, actually. Although I think I'd enjoy the first game a lot more if I got the opportunity to play it with 2 players instead of myself. The second game didn't work in 2-player for me very well, though. :?
As for Mystic Cave Zone, probably the centipedes that suddenly lunge at you in places if you don't expect them are the only things that worry me a little, but other than that, I don't have any problems with it.
AGGH LEMMINGS 2!!!
The flasher badnik is annoying as hell though, and the spikes and pitfalls. Maybe its more the jump in difficulty compared to the preceding stages.
Oil ocean can be annoying, but at least it's open, but I honestly don't remember Metropolis Zone being quite as annoying as some find it, but it is somewhat trying, and by that point in the game I tend to get a game over. (not sure if my brother has gotten past it either, maybe though)
I do like the music, it's got a unique sound, actually somewhat reminiscent of some of the Road Rash music. (especially the title music)
You'll have to bear in mind that I'm not really great at platformers, so when there's a fun, well designed game that's not particularly tough, I'll take it. ;)
Honestly that's probably part of why I prefer sonic 3. I'm actually a lot better at 3D platformers, relatively speaking. (my real forte has always been combat flight/space sims though, followed by some related genres like more arcade style space shooter and rail shooters; then there's adventure and puzzle games, but that's totally separate; I'm not bad at FPSs either)
Perhaps that's also why I don't really love the NES, but like it OK. (it was our first and only console until 1996 -barring PC and a 2600 in storage)
I really need to add a bit to my profile so I can point to that rather than explain this in discussions. ;)
Im torn on Lemmings2. I re-read the manual the other day because I fancied a bash and havn't played it in sooooo long. Fuck is that thing complicated, ground lemmings, air lemmings, shooter lemmings, building lemmings, lemmings lemmings...tis too much so I calmly put it back in its box and sat it back on the shelf.
the played Ghosts n' Ghouls.
Sonic 1 may have slow sections, but there's always something to do so you spend time concentrating on playing it properly.
Sonic 2 is fast, but in many of the levels theres so little player interaction that you start to switch off and feel like you're going through the motions, the game then becomes tedious.
I hate Sonic 3 with a passion right now. Just got it with Sonic and Knuckles, and it froze like six times. Once in a special stage, twice during hydrocity zone, and three fucking times during marble garden zone...the last time being at the very end of the level while fighting the damn boss!!
I was so insanely angry. Luckily, after taking some alcohol and cotton swabs to the contacts, it looks like everything is fine. But man, what a ripoff.
Anyways, as far as sequels go, I'd have to say Vectorman 2. While I was able to sit through and beat the whole game, and had a decent time doing it, it is really dissapointing as a sequel for me. The environments are drab and shitty; it's like an entire game made up of levels you hate to play in normal games. "Oh fuck, the cave level, I hate that level. Oh damn, the lava level, this one sucks. Oh SWEET, the beach level?? That's my favorite!" Yeah, no beach levels here. Just depressing crap.
Yeah I really hated Vectorman 2 as well, its just frustrating in a time consuming way and everything looks tiny and worse than the original.
