Just wondering what a good pair of headphones to buy would be. Right now I'm sort of leaning towards Sony Pro MDR-7506's. They used to be $100 but Amazon's dropped the price by $15 bucks.

AKG K-240 Monitor is what I use. Apparently there is a brandnew reissue of those.
I use Audio Technica ATH-M50. They're pretty nice.
I've been using my Philips SBC HP250 set for I think 5 years now... they're for indoor use but I used them EVERYWHERe, and the result is that they're beaten up and repaired a lot... but sound is still great :D
I just buy Headphones for like $1..good sound
Sennheiser.
My very audio-crazy oldest brother has an amazing pair of AKG headphones (not sure what model, but they cost 150$+) which he uses a tube amplifier with to make a really high quality sound. From a lossless file of a live concert, you could hear the spit in the singer's voice.
I have a pair of low-end Sennheiser cans that my mom bought off of Amazon and gave to me. They are very cheap but they don't sound like it.

These do NOT sound like a $30 pair of headphones. I was very surprised by their quality. And the price is cheap enough that if you break them or wear them out, who cares? Read some reviews of them and you'll see what I'm talking about. The general consensus is that these are an amazing bargain.
You get what you pay for with headphones, but there is definitely a point of diminishing returns with that stuff. I'm not enough of an audiophile that I need a $300+ pair of cans, but I don't want the $20 set of Sony's from Target, either. I would have bought myself something higher end than the ones I have if I were the one making the purchase, but these are nice enough that I don't feel the need to upgrade.
Chris
you can get headphones at the dollar tree that have STEREO Sound for a dollar
I've listened to a crap load of ~$100 headphones and I have to say my favorites are the Sony MDR-V6 Studio Monitor Series headphones and this is coming from a guy who HATES Sony audio with a passion. They've had this model around for decades but they still produce them today. They sound great for all around use (music and movies) and despite being studio monitors they have decent low end.
I bought a JVC HA-RX300 for about 20 bucks, best headphones I've ever used, they have a rocking bass sound.
I bought a set of Leapfrog headphones for $0.50 (that's right, fifty cents) at Goodwill. They are the sturdiest, most useful headphones I've ever had. I wouldn't spend more than a dollar on headphones if I were you. ;)
Love my Pioneer SE-450s, I'd only give them 3 out of 5 for sound quality but I've had them about 15 years and the damn things are indestructable.

No the ones at the dollar store aren't "stereo" they're "sterio" lol.
Genuine sterio digital high defination sound for you!
Did I mention yet that my AKG K-240 Monitor got a recent re-release ? I'd recommend to check them out.
They pretty much cup the entire ear so over the ear I suppose. I'm telling you man I listened to many headphones ~$100 off a headphone amp inc AKG k240, Equation audio rp-21, Ultrasone hfi-700, Sennheiser 212 pro and Koss UR40 and I listened to a DVD movie and music.
The Sony V6's won overall for me.
There's been a reissue called AKG K-240 MKII: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...+Monitor+MK+II (I'd look for the Monitor ones, not the Studio ones)
I use Maximo iMetal IM-490
18Hz-22KHz frequency response.
Thing is, their impedance is a little low, 16 ohms, so if your amp (or portable device) is up to par, there will be a slight hiss on higher volumes. I have to use my vacuum tube headphone amp to get rid of the hissing.
Just got my MDRs out of the box and dang, I see what they mean by break-in time these are the most muffled cans I've ever used ATM.
Hopefully they'll open up soon.
EDIT 7:00 PM: Well, speech sounds decent, as do solos and single-instrument songs, anything more and I have to turn the volume up a good bit to make them sound open, and even then it doesn't sound quite right.
If you were me, you'd happily spend $500+ on amazing headphones with a high-quality tube amplifier. ;)
Are the old, thrift store headphones you got really that good soundwise or are you not too big on sound so you don't really care? If you are not too big on audio stuff, let me give you a warning that will save you lots of money. The Bose company are sick bastards selling you absolute shit for high prices with a bunch of nonsense jargon supposedly telling how they're good, which they aren't. If you are a big audio person, you'd already know that :D.
Anywho, I just got some AKG K-240 Studio headphones from my previously mentioned audiophile brother for $75. He got them for $105 which was already heavily discounted because our uncle who owns a high-end audio/video store gave him about a $70 discount. These are the kind of headphones most studios will use and you'll probably see them in music videos. They're about $100 nowadays. Here they are:

the dollar tree now has them in yellow! WHEW so much selection
I use Sennheiser HD600s myself. Good cans but the stock leads are fragile.
They are wonderful! They seem to make everything sound better. Hopefully I can build up some money soon to get a good tube amplifier for them. Then they'll sound really good.
EDIT: I have yet to try them with my Genesis. Hopefully my Model 1 Non-HD Genesis is of the best sounding models.
I got a pair of Grado SR225i for grad. After a few hours of listening I belive them to be fantastic.
Hey guys, I myself never had headphones more than $30, but Ive decided for once to get a good pair. And after reading different forums and such, I ordered the Sony MDR-V6 today, hope I enjoy them!
Hooking up to the sega genesis with road rash or sonic in will be a good test.
I've used the Sennheiser HD 380 Pros for the past 2 years. Kind of a super snug fit, but that's my only complaint. They sound great.
Funny, someone was just telling me about the Sony MDR-V6 yesterday and this thread bumps. I was thinking about picking them up on Amazon next week.
You guys are going to love them! I've had my Sony V6's for a few years and I still love them! Like I said awhile ago I'm not a huge fan of Sony audio. I think their home audio is just meh, I'm sure some of it is good but overall it's not that great and their car audio as of the xplod series (post ES mobile days) is pathetic garbage. But I was very impressed with the V6's for the price (under $100, heck they're on sale for like $60 on Amazon right now!) when I first heard them. I compared them with AKG k240, Equation audio rp-21, Ultrasone hfi-700, Sennheiser 212 pro and Koss UR40 all running off a Behringer headphone amp listening to a DVD movie and music. While a few others sounded great with the music I honestly thought the Sony V6's sounded the best overall and they were the middle of the pack as far as the price goes.
They're my main set of headphones other than cheaper ones I walk to work with. I've had other Sony headphones and the V6's just blow them away. They do indeed sound great on the Genesis too ;) My only complaint is that they're a little too big and heavy and tend not to "squish" in tight enough on your head if you're listening to them lying down they don't like to stay put. But then again if they were tighter than more people would probably complain about that so it might not be a bad thing. They're the largest headphones I have so it may just be normal for headphones this large to not stay on my head when I'm lying down. Otherwise they're comfortable enough and the sound quality rocks!
I want to test out the Quincy Jones AKG Q701 headphones.

Avoid headphones from JVC like they're the plague...they're absolute dog poo.
I have a pair of Dre Beats studio's pretty good but not worth the price by a long shot, they are built like a tank though which is a huge plus.
