Not sure if this has been asked before but I noticed when playing the CDX, there were little faint vertical lines in the background. Are there any other revisions of the CDX (I only know about the different Genesis revisions) out there that uses various video encoders or have any distinctions in hardware?
My setup is like this:
CDX->scart cable->scart to component converter->component cables->TV. Audio is drawn out through the "line out" port, though this probably doesn't matter.
That's RGB, so no video encoding on the 32x... Sounds like a weak sync signal and/or issue with the RGB=>YUV adapter or your specific TV. I know Christuserloer had similar results via RGB in at least one case. (I think it was straight SCART in that case, so sync would be the only possible issue)
Regardless, it's not related to the video encoder in the CDX (or Genesis), those transcode RGB, the RGB itself being the native output of the Gnesis VDP.
I use JROK and don't have those lines, on an early model 1 non-TMSS VA3 genesis. But my model 2 Genesis DOES have the lines.
This is the issue i am suffering on both my genesis 3 and CDX. Can someone explain further what the issue is?
I have it using both RF cable and AV (red white yellow cable)

I get that too with my CDX through RGB as well as composite. I ended up just sidestepping the issue by plugging my 32X into it.
I haven't tried the setup with either of my model 2s yet though.
And the 32x won't display at all on your HDTV, right? (in component, or S-video too?)Quote:

Also, any similar lines in composite should be unrelated to those in RGB (same goes for S-video -artifacts in all 3 tend to be distinct from eachother, at least in cases with this discription). For composite, dot crawl tends to create vertical bar artrifacts (in luma, so there when color is turned to 0), in S-video mods there's a color artifact that results in vertical lines of a different nature. (externally generated S-video would be a different case though)
Do the bars go away when the color is turned all the way down?
Also, if it's an HDTV, have you made sure the edge enhancement and other such filters are disabled. (in some cases sharpness and edge enhancement are combined, so you'll have to fiddle with the sharpness a bit -when separate it's usually fine to leave sharpness all the way up)
I guess I can slip in the 32X. I'm using a Panasonic Viera plasma 47" HDTV. I'm contemplating on hooking it to an LED HDTV since the image in general for everything just looks better. I've seen those lines in composite as well so I have no clue what it is. Something that can't be tweaked with I guess? I don't mind the lines too much since they are very faint.
I have tried two Widescreen tv's; Phillips 32" and panasonic 28" set at 16:9 and 4:3. Using RF and the AV cable. It seems to cut off a tiny bit at the top of Streets of rage for some reason. The vertical lines are most noticable on sonic games.Quote:

Another point to notice is that i am using an NTSC system in the UK.
If top is cut off on LCDs, push your Zoom/Aspect ratio button till you get "Just Scan" or whatever unzoomed mode it has. Samsungs call it "Just Scan"..
For our sanyo there's a button on the remote dedicated to selecting pixel aspect ratio/zoom (I think it's labeled pixel aspect), and it cycles though something like 6 different scaling/aspect options. (there's 2 full overscan modes, one for 4:3 and 1 16:9, 2 cropping to the minimum edge of overscan -leaving overscan exposed for one axis if it's higher, normally you get a little pillarboxing, finally there's one that zooms in entirely for 16:9 and thus crops a little if overscan isn't proportional or a lot for a 4:3 source)
As for RF/Composite, there are unrelated artifacts there which can be addressed by modding or using RGB/component. (there are improved composite video mods for any units with the CXA1145, and s-video mods as well for any not using the Samsung encoder)
S-video from an 1145 tends to have a different type of vertical bar artifacting, as I mentioned (in chroma), and if you like a bit of blur, the composite mod would be preferable.
Some time has passed and I have got this RGB vertical lines issue too. It looks like some waves coming in the background.. Up to down or left to right or vice versa... When I twist the power supply it looks like the waves movement change too. Have you found any trick to beat this annoying issue? I have 32x too. When I use it the waves are gone. But if I look closely I can see some noise too..

I fixed vertical lines over rgb on my genesis by disconnecting the colour subcarrier pin from the vdp (but that kills the ability to have the genesis make s-video / composite video with colour).
Sorry I misunderstood the term vertical lines.. The lines that I have are like scrolling lines up to down the screen.. Maybe some ground loop issue or something. I am so pissed about that lines. the lines I got are not static ones.. They are moving on the screen annoyingly..
They are caused by the power regulator in the machine. It can be fixed by adding more supply bypass caps around the RGB encoder.
I noticed that when I take out the bottom part of the console and turn it on the scrolling waves are bigger and there is more waves in the picture. When the bottom part of the console is placed the waves are smaller. Is this shielding problem or can it go away when I replace the Power PCB caps? I will change the Power PCB capacitors on the next week when the electronic shop is open.
I am so confused that can removing bottom part of the console affect more issues if the problem is with broken capacitors.. :P
TmEE is right. Supply bypass caps help and/or adding a 7805 regulator for the video chip alone makes a big difference. Im a videophile nut and play my CDX on a 36" RGB CRT. Once in a blue moon I'll see a line or two on a solid color, but hardly ever. It looks damn nice after the mod.

I plan on upgrading to a DC-DC soon as this does produce a lot of heat. Still, that awesome metal bottomed case can handle it (go sega!), Ive run it for weeks with no problems.
