I wanted to make a thread about the Famous K2195D model 2 Genesis systems. since i feel bad my model 2 has one, i wanted a thread were we could make up BS how great the video looks so we all don't feel so bad for owning one.
I was playing Sonic 3 tonight on mine and Super Thunder Blade, it looked fantastic the colors were vivid and clear.
oh yeah i have a genesis 2 with the ka2195d, it is clearly the best video encoder the sega genesis has to offer. anyone who says otherwise is obviously using an inferior model genesis

EDIT: The real problem with the Samsung MDs lies in the audio. Now THAT is terrible.
Really though, the Samsung video looks sharper, and doesn't have rainbow banding.
Same with the 32X video chip.

I feel sort of stupid for running out and getting a Sony chip Genesis, just to low and behold have blurry video with rainbow banding.
I'm glad I still have my other Genesis.

It really depends on the system, it varies... the CXA1145 tends to look a bit poor in model 2s compared to model 1s (saturated, dark, and a little more distorted), the CXA1645 can also look bad in some cases, at least on some TVs as betawolf found out (both a CXA1145 and 1645 looked worse than a K2195D Genesis he got -all were worse than a CXA1145 model 1 iirc), I think a VA4 model 2 he got was fine though. (those only have the 1645)
Sound can be fine too, the VA3 has the K2195 a fair amount of the time and has pretty decent sound, similar to the VA4.
The VA2 and 2.3 also have better sound, but the VA2 at least has off PSG volume, so that's an issue.
The Fujitsu MB3514 is arguably the best, sharper and cleaner than the CXA1145, but darker, and it's unclear exactly how it compares to the CXA1645 (ie if there are odd cases where it looks poor).
The other thing is that the K2195D isn't any good for modding.
The CXA1145 can be modded for improved composite video and S-video.
The CXA1645 and MB3514 are even simpler to s-video mod as they have built-in amps, and I think the MB3514 lacks the vertical bar chroma artifacts that the Sony chips are prone to.
Too bad the MB3514 is most common in PAL regions (on MD1 and 2s) with RGB often being a viable alternative there. (except cases like Australia, where it would indeed come in handy due to the lack of SCART in common use)

I was soo jealous that my Genesis systems did have the Samsung K2195D chip, that I smashed them all. Dammit.
I feel so ashamed and inferior for not having a single machine with K2165D :(

LCD's suck for anything less than 720p
Thats why I have a 20something inch Mitsubishi TV from 1991 for the older stuff. The LCDs fail to comprehend the glory of the KA2195D. Its only failing is only 1 composite input and 1 RF, but I have a switch.
Nope, it really depends on the TV, some have excellent 240p support including full 60fps frames without deinterlacing, some have good 480i support but not 240p, but most with really good SDTV support will work well for both. (our 5 year old Philips LCD SDTV works great for 240p and 480i stuff and it had better given that's all it supports ;) but some HDTVs have similar support it really depends on the TV)Quote:

However, I think pretty much all HDTVs work fine for 480p, that's generally a non-issue. (LCDs scale it of course, but that's not a huge issue)
720p is a bigger issue though as you can actually lose a fair bit more detail there on "720p" LCD sets ad they're generally 1360x768 (or 1365x768) but scale 720p to full screen, so you get detail loss due to interpolation/filtering (antialiasing -it would look worse if no AA was applied, of course), so you get a soft blurry picture rather than sharp pixel perfection as it would be for a 1360x768 source (as from a PC).
I've heard some TVs have options to set true square pixels too with a small boarder (thus 1280x720 in a pixel perfect window on the 1360x768 screen) so you get a boarder ~3% the screen height/width around the outer edge in exchange for a pixel perfect display.
I think our Sanyo might have that option but I haven't messed around with it. I know it has a "pix shape" function to toggle through different aspect ratios and screen sizes (including modes showing full overscan for SDTV and EDTV), but I haven't tried it for 720p stuff.
I also recall that some TVs only have that feature via the service menu.
For 1080p/1080i that's a non issue as it's going to be downconverted (and deinterlaced for the latter unless the TV can do single field 540p display), and 1080p native TVs are true 1920x1080p, and 720p would be a non issue there too unless you'd be willing to view in a much smaller window. (the native resolution is high enough that it should upscale OK with a good video scaler)
