Who else likes to torture themselves?

Ok, so basically what I'm asking is if there are others out there that want to like certain genre games but suck at them? I went through a shmup, shoot-em-up, shooter, space shooter, whatever you wanna call it phase recently. Most of these types of games hand me my ass on a platter, but I decided to sit down with ThunderForce 3 and finally beat it it on my last life. I kept at it and got to where I could beat it with about 20 lives left and was soooooooo proud of myself. Then I realized after some researching that this is one of the easier games in this genre. I was pretty bummed cause my bad assness just went out the window.
So as of lately I've been buying up FPS'S which I suck at even more, but for some reason that hasn't stopped me from buying about 10 in the past month. So I guess I'm just curious if anyone else has this problem? Maybe I'm just a masochist, I have no clue.

I LOVE 80s arcade games. Joust, Tron, Discs of Tron, Defender, Stargate, Asteroids, Galaga, and those are definitely harder than your average "Shmup".

But me, I'm the kind of guy who likes quick games, games that are fun and yet short. I don't care for the games that go on for hours and hours. Just give me a little 5 minute fix of whatever.

I'm terrible at fighters, but keep playing them. Everyone can pull off monster combos and I'm lucky to remember how to do a special move. It's rare that I don't get my butt handed to me by everyone when I play.

I am a big fan of Gradius. I loved playing Gradius in the arcade and the NES. I bought Gradius III and IV for the PS2. I must be a gluton for punishment because these games are extra hard. I finally beat them, but it took me forever. But yeah, that was about as close to torture as I could think.

Sorry if this type of thread has been done before. Though I doubt there are many that haven't. Maybe I'm just lazy?

every once in a while I'll buy a sport game or download a sports demo, and rarely play it. When I do play it, the CPU beats my ass.

Well, it isn't true. Thunder Force 3 isn't easier than other shmups. It's all a thing of memorization.

Well, maybe I'm better than I think but I doubt it. As much as I try to play any R-Type game or Einhander I still get beat like a little girl. It doesn't make me want to stop playing, just makes me wonder why I'm still playing.

It's because each shmup is different. See I can beat Thunder Force 4 in my sleep. Doesn't mean I am good at Thunder Force 2 or 3 or R-Type, etc.

TF3 in NORMAL difficulty is the piecest piece of cake shmup on the MD. It loses maybe only to Trouble Shooter.

Now try cranking it up to MANIA. That's where all the fun is. ;)

Torturing myself? Yes sir, I do like it, specially while playing a certain level in Pathways into Darkness for the Machintosh. I've been trying to get past the blasted thing for ages now...
