I would have liked to see:
A Sequel to the 2 X-Men games on the Genesis (I know there was a planned X-Men game & an X-Women game or was that for the Genesis....)
Street Fighter Alpha 1 or 2 (The Snes had Street Fighter Alpha 2 why not 32x?)
X-Men: Arcade Game (You all know the arcade game :D)
When the 32x was new, I kept hoping for a port of King of Fighters 94, since the 16 bitters wouldn't be able to handle it and the CD based systems were a long way off.
In retrospect, the SNES and Genesis probably could have pulled off decent conversions, but the cartridge would have been HUGE.

I remember seeing MK2 for the Saturn in the store once. I was thinking "Hey, the Saturn is awesome at 2d fighters, I get my perfect version at last!"
...then I got home and played it.

Which always surprised me they never did a home conversion for the ol' Sega, the hardware specs were very near identicle and to up the Mhz they could of used the 10mhz pin on the cart slot.

We've done this before, but perhaps System Shock. (probably more practical as a CD32x game)
A CD32x version of Doom (with more complete content and 3DO soundtrack) would have been nice, though that will eventually happen if Chilly Willy has anything to say about it. ;)
X-Wing (CD is more practical there as well), most PC ports could probably be more practical on the CD due to the greater amount of RAM. (and mass storage)
Perhaps Thunder Blade, Galaxy Force (and 2), or some other arcade scalers like Out Run. (Out Run 2019 with upgraded graphics would be great) Then again, those should have been on CD too along with After Burner and Space Harrier. (limited color, and some limits due to the VDP, but should still have been capable of good quality ports -especially compared to some on the MD)

just for curiosity, could Heart of Darkness run as CD32x game at all? his real screen size was 256x192 and runs in 256 colors, right? could the setup handle all the animations? i'm asking this because i played it on pc few months ago using a MD 6buttons controller, and i just wondered how it could run on his HW :p

No... They should have done that on the Sega CD years earlier, and for games meriting it FAR more than System 16 games with simple sprite scaling, but the big scalers like Space Harrier, After Burner(II), Galaxy Force(II), Thunder Blade, Out Run, Hang On, etc etc, not to mention new games.Quote:

It did more advanced scaling than most of the Sega scaling arcade titles too, so they could modify some to cater more to it (like using slab textures for walls/building sides rather than many flat sprites/bitmaps as in the arcade -see the Batman driving games vs arcade Thunder Blade).
Hell, they could have made compilations too, and more than the simple arcade classics sets they did.
What it couldn't handle was higher color stuff and anything with more than a modest polygon count (like Stellar Fire), that's where the 32x shined: using the added color for the higher detail top layer of a 2D game and using genesis for the BG (that's often the most effective route and what Kolibri did), but the 3D is the most impressive compared to the 2D consoles -32x is all software driven so flexible but not optimized for any one thing, thus most impressive at doing things that can't be done in hardware on contemporaries.

The Space Harrier port on the 32x was just fine. The 32x could have very well been successful if it had been positioned as the TRUE arcade experience from SEGA. By the mid 90's, arcades had just begun to show the signs of decline, and SEGA was in a position to bring the Arcade experience that everyone was missing, home. Think about it, who was the 32x mainly targeted towards? Teens and twenty-somethings who had fond memories of their childhood playing SEGA games in the arcade. Now, with this add-on, they could have easily have a near-perfect port in their home. I think that if they had done this for the Sega CD (or even Sega CD 32x), the load times at the time were so great, that it would not amount to the same experience.Quote:

The Sega CD alone could have done good jobs with many such ports and SHOULD have already done so (should have been at least 1 such at launch in Japan or shortly after, really odd that SoJ rarely used the features they put into the system).
Now the colors would be limited compared to the 32x, and framerate (to some extent, depending on the case), but there were many other trade-offs as well and other advantages for the CD.
It wouldn't have been able to do the 3D stuff though, not Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter, Shadow Squadron, Star Wars Arcade, Chaotix's special stages, Metal Head, Doom, or such (at least without another add-on like the SVP or something along those lines and it would still be with limited colors -like Star Fox, SVP Virtua Racing, etc). At least unless you reworked some of those into different games (replaced chaotix's special stages, used simpler raycasting and scaling sprites for Metal Head, etc -Shadow Squadron really wouldn't have been the same as a wing commander style scaling based game though -again SVP or similar could have addressed that without the complexity of the 32x -or all heavier 3D stuff could have simply been left to the Saturn)
T-Mek would have been perfect for the Sega CD, as would Space Harrier or After Burner. Let alone the modest amount of scaling from System-16 games like Altered Beast or Golden Axe.
The Sega CD wasn't ideal, but it was already there and you've got to work with what you've got. (SoA still hadn't tapped the broader aspect of marketing either, they could easily have promoted some of the other features as they later did with the 32x -SoJ didn't help much though with the lack of scaling arcade ports and exclusive games using that -really odd given they designed the system)
The 32x wasn't ideal either for that matter... and HAD the Sega CD been more ideal (ie cart mounted, with bitmap/color expansion) the 32x most likely wouldn't have existed and the Sega CD's added features would have been much more flexible. (3D SVP+Sega CD games could have looked close to 32x quality or better in some areas)
32x (and games) were similar or more expensive than the Sega CD and games at the time.
Of course, Saturn totally conflicted with it, meaning they crowded their own market and divided resources. (greatly weakening the Saturn's initial library for one, probably weakening the Sega CD and MD's a little as well, dividing 1st, 2nd and 3rd party development interests as well as marketing)
That alone makes the whole idea of Mars/32x a bit mind boggling. (especially the amount of support SoJ put into it compared to the Saturn early on; it seems like they really got behind it -along with STI)

The Sega CD really should have gotten more of those kinds of games, not just scaling ones, but 2D arcade games in general. (any that could be segmented into 512 kB or 768 kB reasonably well could have had much improved audio and animation over the Genesis counterparts -at least in cases where the Genesis versions hadn't already maxed out the VDP bandwidth for dynamic sprite/tile updates -without additional vertical clipping)
And Final Fight already did get a pretty good Sega CD port. (given that, it's a bit odd that there's no SFII of any kind on the Sega CD... definitely could have addressed the sound issues if nothing else -which was pretty much the main issue as the graphics were often more detailed/accurate on the MD versions than contemporary ports -unless using the 320 wide resolution would have been facilitated -I'd think VRAM space might be the limiting factor there -DMA wouldn't as that increases proportionally to the higher res mode, there would be other areas of compromise too, like clipping to 288 pixels wide)
As it is, most of the graphics in the SFII console ports weren't optimized for the wider pixels of 256 wide mode (PCE, SNES, and MD use the same resolution), pretty much all the in-game stuff seems to be left as square pixel art (looks right in an emulator set to 1:1 pixels, but stretched horizontally on a TV or with TV aspect ratios enabled in emulation -far, far worse for PAL users as they get a vertically squished display on top of all that -320 wide mode on the Genesis wouldn't be perfext either, slightly tall in NTSC but closer, and a good compromise for PAL users too as it would look a little squished but not nearly as bad).
Dithering also blends better in 320 wide mode. (much of this would also apply to the MD versions too, and I'd argue that in many respects a 256x200 window in 320 wide mode would look better than the 256x200 256 wide display they used -most obviously for PAL users- and that's if VRAM couldn't allow for a bit more horizontal resolution, even 272 or 288 wide -at 288 the boarder would barely be noticeable on many TVs)
I'd second any System 16, Y or System 32 port to the 32X. Secondarily to that I was really looking forward to Super Street Fighter 2 and Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, both of which were actually announced. While I think the 32X port of MK2 was fine, I would have loved to have seen what Sculptured Software would have done with their, no doubt, SNES version upgrade.
Similarly to what others have said, I wish the 32X had sold well enough to have merited ports of popular 3DO, Saturn, and PS1 games from its time. There were also plenty of PC, MAC and Amiga games that could have been relatively painlessly ported to the add-on. I can't remember the name of the game, but there was a particular polygonal space ship "sim" that I was hoping would swiftly follow Shadow Squadron/Stellar Assault back in the day.
After playing the horrible Motocross Championship, I found myself wishing for a Road Rash game on the 32x. After all, 3DO had one and the 32x had similar capabilities to it. Also, I agree with Daytona USA Devon listed above. As good as Virtua Racing is, Daytona USA was awesome and it would've been great on the 32x.
Pretty much any of the titles put out for the Jaguar, such as Alien v Predator which has been listed a few times, could've been released for the 32x and probably been just as good. Wolfenstein would have been awesome. Of course, there are some pretty decent homebrews out there.
I'm not sure why everybody hates Motocross. It has two player split screen, 20+ scaling bikes on screen at once, Road Rash style punching of other riders, Excitebike style jump controls, and texture mapped courses. The only thing I don't like about the game is the music, but I guess it might have a learning curve for Road Rash fans.
Frame rate is the big issue for me... I love ANYTHING with a high frame rate.. New or old.... But that has quite a low frame rate...Quote:

The stock car in VR Deluxe handles very similarly to the Daytona car. That little add-on convinced me to bus tables for *months* just so I could get it on launch day. Aside from the persisting back pain, I don't regret a minute of it. ;)
It beats Road Rash in every respect technically and gameplay wise, that was my main point. Even the framerate is better. One thing I find odd today is people going back to things they never played before and expecting modern performance. I can't think of a single 3D, psuedo 3D, or sprite scaling engine from before 1994 that ran above 15FPS. I'm not even sure that arcade games like Galaxy Force II managed it, but it has been a long time since I've seen one of these in an arcade.Quote:

I have tried numerous times over the years to get somebody to enjoy the game 2-player with me, and they always get bored or irritated. Road Rash 2 does the same thing nowadays though, so I have no idea why.

Heh, Motocross for the 32x looks kinda bad in the graphics department. The bike sprites are pretty low res (and low color) and NES style frame animation (like two frame animation. Turning/sliding animation looks terrible). If it had 4 player split screen, maybe that's why they toned back the original game (so there would be no difference other than size). Frame rate is low, but still looks playable. But I would have been seriously disappointed if I have purchased that game BITD (considering what the 32x was supposed to represent). SH and AB are far more superior looking and impressive.
That's my mistake, it's 2-player only. The sprites only look low resolution by the standards back then when they are at the maximum "zoom" on original hardware though. I agree on the animation, I think an extra couple of frames would have done wonders for the "feel" of the game.
