Model 1 Question

I own a model 2, and have only ever owned model 2's, and I've heard from many sources that model 1's are fairly superior. Out of the reasons sited though, one I considered doesn't seem to be among them so maybe I'm mistaken, please correct or confirm me on this:

The Genesis Model 2's power button seems to operate on a kind of clicking lock. When you press the button down a locking mechanism locks it into place. When you press it again, the lock releases letting the button rise back up and the power shuts off.

My first Genesis 2 I ever owned was sacrificed because of this. after excessive use, the power button no longer locked into place. I remember (as I was about 14 and it was already the PS2/XBOX era when this happened) the only way to keep playing Genesis was to use duct or electrical tape to hold the power button in place.

Now it looks like from pictures, the Model 1 uses more of a switch than a button, and it would seem to me this is less prone to breaking from normal use. Has anyone found this to be true?

I had a Model 1, and my mate had a Model 2 (his had red buttons, I was envious)

Obvisouly at the time I drempt of owning a Model 2, only now do I really love the look of the powerhouse Model 1!

Anyways Im getting off track.

His power button stopped working after a few years of heavy use and general childhood electronic abuse (how we had no respect for our electronics) but my Model 1 long outlasted.

Ive had several Model 1s and still do however;

I have one thats about 19 years old, the power switch works great. ive got another which is about 16 years old, a later revision and the switch sticks a little more, doesn't feel as smooth BUT it doesn't cause any problems and still works fine, just feels a lil' sticky! and thats after cleaning.

But its like anything, the better you look after it! but in all honesty Model1s are near bulletproof :D

Well, I had a non-HDG Genesis Model 1 that had the switch stop working. The plastic piece holding it up against the console shell broke off from abuse. I glued it back on but the switch subsequently became hard to move. The switch on my current HDG Model 1 has no problems.

Actually, the Japanese & Asian model 2 did not have that issue as they kept the model 1 power switch:

Still, the stock model 1 is better due to its better sound output. On some model 2s it's barely 1/4th of the frequency spectrum that gets through. It can be fixed via modding though. TmEE offers a Crystal Clear Audio Mod (CCAM) which allows you to enjoy the very best sound possible from a model 2.

So if you wanna keep your model 2 but want the power switch and sound capabilities of a model 1, buy a Japanese or Asian model 2 and send it to TmEE to get it fixed.

omg...Thats the most beautiful thing I've ever seen... Why the heck do the japanese get all the cool stuff?? I know its the most over stated question in gaming/anime/giant warrior robot history but its not less important!

I assume though even the japanese model 2 from the look of it is not compatible with the master system adapter.

Yeah, it's a beauty. I prefer it a lot over the European model with those stupid red buttons...

Fortunately for me I've never had the problem of buttons breaking or not wanting to lock & unlock because I rarely had a Sega Model 2 I mostly bought newer model 1s I have too of them at the moment both mint.

I do have to say though, that the Megadrive 2 looks way sexier than our Sega model 2.

I wouldn't have minded if the on-off switch was blue also, and the flaps were like midnight blue.

you don't like it 64K? Probably the color scheme you don't like, but I find it trendy. IDK. I haven't seen an ugly sega product, even a model one being ganged by a 32X and a Sega-CD at the same time looks cool to me. It looks like a science experiment. (side note: I just took Alladin out of the box and beat it in a half hour without dying... Its so weird playing games you haven't touched since you were a kid and finding out "Oh wait a second...I'm awesome."

IIRC, the Mega Drive 2 doesn't have the cartridge lock mechanism that the original Japanese Mega Drive has, so while the second Master System converter will work, the original Power Base Converter won't fit unless you cut out some of the plastic.

I know what 64K is talking about I've seen a few model 1's with loose power switch sliders and when you try to slide them they angle and jam in the plastic shell instead of sliding over. Usually you just wiggle it a little and it goes.

But overall the model 1 is so much better man! Just get one! I can't stand the model 2 I think it looks so damn cheap!

Hate to see your opinion of the model 3. XD I notice no one even mentions it.

It's always best to stick with a Model 1 Sega Genesis. Model 2's are known to have leaky Blast Processors which causes the audio to sound like garbage and slowly melts the power button causing it to be a pain in the butt to turn on or off.
Sega and Majesco had to join forces to get the Blast Processing to fit into the Model 3 but that came at a hefty price, you cannot use a Virtua Racing,32X, PBC, or Sega CD with it. Trying to make any of the listed items work with the Model 3 are extremely dangerous.

The best Model 1 Genesis is the Non-TMSS High Definition Graphics one. The Blast Processing is so powerful that it causes rainbow banding and the best audio experience known to man.

Virtua Racing was made to work with some information I provided. I forget who actually took into account what I said and made such a modification work.

I forget.

It was one of the things that came out of my mouth that was actually valid and resourceful information in the task of modding a Genesis. :p

Rob Ivy applied that fix to a VA1, then ooXxXoo did the same to a VA1 (and possibly a VA2). Ace tried, but broke his VA2, and my VA2 can run it without synchronization...

Ahh yes, I remember Rob now.. I once said something about extra lines on the Genesis cart slot and what I think it did for VR, and it was found the Gen 3 didn't have it, but was on the board, some soldered wires later, and it turned out to be true and worked.

That was SO long ago though.
