The famous nazca lines in Peru, ancient shapes from debatable origin, but ancient for sure:

Anyone recall the classic Doctor Who adventure Revenge of the Cybermen? In the making of which is part of the special features on the DVD, a producer talks about the scenes shot in the cave and his encounter with a driver. Who later turned out to be a ghost. Check it out it's there.
Well, it's not so much COMPLICATED as it is EXACTING. You need to be very precise about what you are doing since you are working on such a large scale. That means you have to be very careful about following directions. That limits you on WHO can do it as many people don't have that kind of focus. It's sort of like the difference in focus between an abstract artist and a photo-realistic artist.
Right, creating the Nazca lines is not really complicated, just exacting and ridiculously demanding.... IIRC the method used was supposedly just lifting up rocks to expose lighter rocks, to form lines...
But why the heck were its creators so obsessed with creating these enormous designs, which are too big to be seen when you're on the ground? Why did they slave away for these pictures that can ONLY be seen from the air? Sure "religious ceremony." But for the UFO buffs, the implications are obvious that the pictures could be meant to be seen by those up above....

Why did they do it? Maybe they were insane. Van Gogh cut off his ear... the Nazca made images no one could appreciate.
Actually, I think the answer is simpler... the Nazca lines date from about 400 to650 AD; combine that with the fact that the Chinese had hot air balloons in the second century AD. Maybe these people had hot air balloons, but that fact was lost over time due to war or disease and something. Lots of inventions have been lost and rediscovered later, then found to date earlier than previously thought.
Well, if someone somewhere can invent something, probably someone else somewhere else can too. I saw a show a few months back on "ancient astronauts" that claimed the Aztecs/Mayans had seen flying machines because of some jewelry they found that looked vaguely like a jet. They made a large-scale model of the jewelry and found the shape was aerodynamic and flew pretty well. However, the design didn't look much like a jet, it looked more like a flying fish to me. They might have seen flying fish and copied how they look when "flying" in the air.
So perhaps these same people made something like a kite on that same design that could lift a person high in the air. That would be an alternative to the balloon idea.
Perhaps the Nazca people made these pictures to let their gods (or extraterrestrial aliens) know that they're there ? Kinda like someone stranded on an island would make a fire to let passing airplanes know he's there.
And not unlike we did when with the Golden Record sent out with Voyager I & II:

"This is a present from a small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours." - Jimmy Carter
BTW, in Shining Force II one of these shapes actually turns out to be an ancient space ship that brings you back to your homeland
10/23/10 at 7pm, this poor guy films a "UFO fleet" over the highway, with his loud-mouthed fishwife Buck-o.
"Gimme the camera!"
"BUCK-O, I got it!"

"They're behind those freakin' damn phone lines!"
