System Wars (Mega Drive vs. PC Engine) - part 4

Pretty much the same as the other similar threads, except I don't necessarily own the games (actually I do or have before, but it doesn't really matter).
Choose Mega Drive game (1.) vs. PC Engine games (1.) and decide which is better. Do likewise for the other four match-ups. Which systems comes out the winner? I tried to make fair match-ups, but it's relative of course.

Well i don't own a PC engine, but i do know i hated NEC PCs so iam gonna have to choose sega.

What's your rundown on the games?

For me, I think...:

2. Thunder Force III < Gate of Thunder (really hard to choose!)

4. Beyond Oasis < Ys Books I&II (can't beat Ys for me, but maybe others prefer Thor?)
5. Sonic CD > Dracula X: Rondo of Blood (tough one, but I find more replay value in Sonic CD, but playing as Maria is damned fun.)

Play Mega Bomberman on the Mega Drive or Genesis. It's basically the same as Bomberman '94 on the Turbo/PCE. Not the same as Bomberman '93, but it'll give you a good idea. Better yet, get Saturn Bomberman.

Some of the PCE games are also available on PSN if you have a PS3.

I had to go with the TG16 because of the Castlevania game (I have it on Wii VC). Thunderforce III is an amazing shooter for sure and I bet Sonic CD is awesome... but the TG16 Castlevania game is too good to pass up. I'm unfamiliar with most of the other games though.

I have to go with the Gemmy/Sega CD(Sonic CD, Thunder Force 3 are both awesome, and Beyond Oasis was pretty good as well.

Hmmmm... even so far. Hopefully most people see the game match-ups here as being fairly equal.

I've got to go with the Genesis. PC Engine does have the greatest Castlevania of all time (Love Rondo of Blood), but there's not too much else that really catches my fancy on the system

I'm especially partial to the PCE and the Saturn, truth be told. I do have a very soft spot for the Genny and Sega CD as well, since I choose the Genesis over the SNES back in the day and saved up a lot of money delivering newpapers to buy in when I was in jr. high school. Sonic 1, Castle of Illusion and Phantasy Star II were enough to keep me from getting an SNES first. I got the Sega CD2 for Christmas in 1993, so I'm very nostalgic for that as well (Lunar!). I'm a Sega fanboy at heart, but, I gotta admit, the PCE is the 16-bit (era) system for shooters (not that the Genesis is lacking in this area, TFIII, IV and a lot of the Sega CD shooters are amazing!!!!!!).

If I was on a deserted island with only one system, but the entire library for it, choosing between the Genesis/Sega CD (let's say they come with CD add-ons), PC Engine/Super CD, SNES and Saturn (region modded or a 4-in-1 cart!) would be very difficult. Anyway, that's not what these threads are about I think. It seems to me that we (I and oldschool so far) are trying to select 5 comparable games on competing systems and seeing which system to choose if we only had those 5 games the thread-started mentions. I find it fun!

I made the list for this thread, Mr. Tom, and have owned all 10 games. The only ones I haven't played all the way through are Fighting Masters and Fighting Street, for reasons I'm sure you can guess.

Only game I haven't played is Fighting Masters. I use to play Street Fighter the arcades when it first came out, so I'm partial to it. The TGCD version is dead easy once you learn how to pull off the special moves.

Also, Why didn't you pair up Sonic CD with Bonk. Sonic CD to Drac X seems like a weird comparison/vs.

- Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle < Bonk's Adventure: No contest, really.
- Thunder Force III < Gate of Thunder: God, this is a super hard one. Both are my favorite. For now, it's GOT, but it could go TFIII any other time.
- Fighting Masters < Fighting Street: I guess Fight Street because I have history with it. But that's not really fair since it IS a shitty game.
- Beyond Oasis < Ys Books I&II: Ys all the way. Never cared for BO (pun intended ;) )
- Sonic CD < Dracula X: Rondo of Blood: No contest. I'd take the original Sonic over Sonic CD. Sonic CD feels like a fake/rip off Sonic game (and not a good one at that).

It might be because of a personal preference, but Sonic CD is one of the greatest platformers of all time as far as I'm concerned. I'm not the only one who feels like this, but I am aware that there are those who don't really "get" Sonic CD. Maybe you are one of them? I thought of putting Bonk1 vs. Sonic one, but I think Sonic would've destroyed Bonk, so I wanted to think of a different platformer that was both fun, but privative. I thought it was a decent match. Although I do like Bonk quite a bit, I enjoy Alex Kidd almost equally. Bonk's Revenge, on the other hand, would've destroyed Alex for me. Maybe Kid Chameleon or Decap would've been a better match-up?

Totally disagree! Sonic CD, along with Sonic 3 & Knuckles, are the absolute pinnacle of the series for me (including SA and everything after). In fact, when pop in a Sonic game (usually a couple times a month), it's either Sonic 1 (for a short round) or Sonic CD (if I have a bit more time).

My vote goes for the PC Engine since the only game you listed for it that sucks is Fighting Street, as for the Genny games listed this time I'm just not a big fan of Alex Kid in The Enchanted or Fighting Masters

I honestly don't get the love for Alex Kid. It almost looks like an 8-bit platformer and the gameplay is rather stale, even for its time.

I like Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, even if it is overly simple.

PC Engine for Dracula X. Awesome game!

I thought Sonic CD would've held up better, to be honest. Maybe Sonic 3 & Knuckles would've put up more of a battle?

Well, some of the 8-bit installments, especially Miracle world are often considered better games, so that could be part of it...
Then again, some consider several of the 8-bit sonic games better than the 16-bit ones. (less common though, probably not least because of how less well known they are and how it's often the GG incarnations people are familiar with -which are killed by the small screen window)

Sonic CD could have been "less accepted" in contrast with the others of the series, but it's quality for sure beats many other games.

For me. Sonic CD just had something off about it. It felt generic, long without fun... I dunno. It's hard to put my finger on it, but I was seriously let down when it came out. Apparently the game wasn't done by the original Sonic team or team leader (something like that). So I attribute it to that, even if I can't pinpoint all the specific reasons and say "there, that's why".

Hate to surprise you, but I like TF3 overall more than TF4 :) TF4 has wonderful visuals, great music, etc. But overall TF3 is just more fun to me, without needing to be over the top in every category. I also love the tracks of TF3 over TF4's (although TF4 redone tracks in the Saturn pack-in-bonus audio CD are freaking awesome).

Yuji Naka, one of the main guys behind the Sonic games (1, 2, 3, K, etc.) did not work on Sonic CD. Nauto Oshima, the original designer behind Sonic 1 was behind it. So yeah, there really is a reason that it feels "different."

I actually agree on TF3. I find it more fun to just pick up and play. The opening theme and the forest level (forget the name) from TF3 are permanently ingrained in my head, but no tunes from TF4 are.

And that list was weak anyway... listing Risk for PB but not Stratego or Battleships. (though on the point of the Vectrex, MB wasn't the initial distributor, they bought GCE who owned the Vectrex)

The titles selected aren't a fair match up for the Mega Drive. I'm the biggest Alex Kidd in Miracle World fan, but I hated Enchanted Castle. Castle of Illusion would've been a better counterpart to Bonk's Adventure.

Fighting Masters has got to be better gameplay-wise than Fighting Street. But Fighting Street is still very entertaining. ;)
