Sega cd weird thing!

Well,when my sega cd model 1 arrived,it was opening and closing the tray like a freak,then when I opened the cd i saw that thelens was not going up,checked that,and it was the gear that didn´t touched the switch and when I finally readjusted(it was impossible to close the tray while not moving the gear,so it moved along with the tray) the lens was going up,but then the tray would´nt open,then when i finally managed to open the tray,when it closed,now it didn´t lift the lens,so now i have to put the disc directly on the tray,and to make it close i have to move the gear manually to make it close, but it reads and plays when done,so what could it be? Please help me!

That happened to mine when I bought it back in the day. All I remember was taking it apart and letting the drive gear reset itself and put it back together.

It's not that big of a deal, really.

The CD Drive on the SEGA-CD is an standard SONY CD-Player drive.

There's a "special" position on the big black gear which allow you to move the tray in and out without it actually need to spin the gear. It's intended to be used on "servicing". The cylindrical gear which elevates the mechanism also have an "postion point" relative to the big black gear which pulls the tray in and out. That's the only tricky part.

There's a hole on the black gear and all you need to do is line it up with a hole on the drive body while you have the CD mechanism down. Push the tray completely in (It should go in without spin the black gear) and finally move the black gear until the mechanism is completely up. If you notice the mechanism is stuck, do not get desperate and NO MATTER WHAT DON'T FORCE THE GEARS as they might break.

Do it slowly as if one of the gears break the machine is trashed.

If you disassembly it make sure to clean and lube it with gray/white lythium grease (of the kind compatible with plastic).

It will then be like new ! :D

thanks l oliveira going to try, because the tray only sometimes open after playing a disc, and have to push the drive to make the disc to read

That pretty much means the grease is dry and is actually jamming the mechanism. That's exactly what my MEGA-CD was doing before maintenance.

Sorry to thread jack, but...

Any chance you could make a youtube video of this? I think I may have the same issue with my model 1 and I don't want to screw it up.
