System Wars (Saturn vs. Nintendo 64) - part 4

Which system, given only these 5 games, would you take if you were stranded on a desert island with only a TV, solar generator, and one of these systems with the 5 games listed here.

My picks:

1. NiGHTS into Dreams (Saturn) > Mario 64 (N64)
-Mario gets old after a while. NiGHTS doesn't, for me.

2. Radiant Silvergun (Saturn) > Star Fox 64 (N64)
-Radiant Silvergun for me. That game will take a long time to master, although I'd probably prefer Dodonpachi, Gradius Deluxe Pack or Sexy Parodius personally.

3. Sega Rally (Saturn) < F-Zero X (N64)
-F-Zero X. I LOVE that game.

4. Panzer Dragoon Saga < The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
-tough call, but I go with Zelda by a cunt-hair.

5. Panzer Dragoon II Zwei > Sin & Punishment: Successor of the Earth (N64)
-another tough call. I'll go with Panzar Dragoon, but only because I find the characters in Sin & Punishment a little too cheesy for my liking.

Buddy this time it's impossible, its a razor sharp draw. Too many greats gathered together. Gaming wins.

I had much the same feelings on the games, but put Mario 64 just ahead of Nights, so N64 won this round by a hair in my opinion.

My vote is for the Saturn, I've never been a big N64 fan.

Hey, you're supposed to compare the 5 games... not the systems! I tried to make them as equal as possible. Tough with Radiant Silvergun in there. The only decent 2D shoot 'em up on the N64 is Star Soldier, and it just doesn't compare.

Anyways based on the games you picked i would have to go with N64 and usually i hate nintendo but for me the saturn was lackluster

The thing with the N64 is that most games were available/portable in/to either the PS1 or the Dreamcast (and beyond). The Saturn had so many more exclussives. I need not go far, though. All I have to say is, I'm in love with the Saturn's 2D library (of which the N64 lacks in the 99.99th percentile). Saturn ftw, baby! :D

You do realize that you are choosing the system based only on the 5 games listed, right? Of all the Saturn games there, only one features 2D gameplay... and even that game is in 3D! I didn't really have a lot on the N64 with to compare with 2D Saturn games. ;)

Mr. Dreamcast would like to talk to you. I do agree about the Saturn being the console of choice, though. The GC and Wii could also fall under your definition here.

I ALMOST did that on the first thread you made, but I always read through a thread before voting on a poll, just on general principles. By this time, people should have an idea that they aren't voting on the system, but the games matched up in the first post.

-Panzer Dragoon is AWESOME. Love that game. Wish it wasn't so short.

I would take the Saturn to the desert island, merely for the satisfaction of dropping it into the ocean and then skimming the CDs on the surface.

I have only played 2 of those N64 games compared to 4 of the Saturn games. I do feel that Mario 64 was a bit overrated. And you should've put Waverace 64 on there instead of F-Zero 64. But I gotta go with the Saturn in this case.

The Nintendo 64 is on the same level as the Atari Jaguar for me. An ugly POS with terrible controllers. I only have love for two or three games on the system, MARIO TENNIS, goldeneye and perfect dark. The Saturn is my favorite machine. <3

1. NiGHTS into Dreams (Saturn) vs. Mario 64 (N64): I like Nights alot, but there's just more gametime to be had with Mario 64.

2. Radiant Silvergun (Saturn) vs. Star Fox 64 (N64): I loved the first Starfox. I can't say the same for the rest of the titles in the series, not even the bootleg Starfox 2.

3. Sega Rally (Saturn) vs. F-Zero X (N64): F-Zero is alright, but it isn't the perfection that Sega Rally is. F-Zero GX might have won in this matchup, but I don't think X is as good of a game.

4. Panzer Dragoon Saga vs. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: Panzer Dragoon Saga is an excellent game, but Ocarina of Time is one of the greatest of all time.

5. Panzer Dragoon II Zwei vs. Sin & Punishment: Successor of the Earth (N64): I've never played Sin & Punishment, but I have seen videos of the game in play. It looks like a pretty cool shooter, but I don't believe it's as good as Zwei.


The Saturn was hands down, my favorite console of the 32-bit generation. It's actually one of my all-time favorite consoles as well.

There was a big, fat, stupid perception that no one wanted to play 2D (or, more specifically, side-scrolling) games during that generation because it was, like, so last generation. I think the Playstation got away with it because of how cheaply games could be produced for it (hence all the shovelware), but the N64 was probably too expensive for anyone to take the risk.

I do like the N64, have quite a few games for it (but it seems like N64 fans get burned at the stake these days). The Saturn I've had for some time now but unfortunately I don't have many games for it. IMO this is a good selection of games, 3 of the Saturn ones I own.

1. NiGHTS into Dreams (Saturn) vs. Mario 64 (N64): I just can't get into NiGHTS. I won't say it's a bad game because it isn't, but every time I try to play it I can't help but feel I'm doing something wrong. Mario 64 is always a main stay.

2. Radiant Silvergun (Saturn) vs. Star Fox 64 (N64): I've never played Radiant Silvergun, so I can't really pick it. Star Fox 64 I've played and love it.

3. Sega Rally (Saturn) vs. F-Zero X (N64): Oooh, now this is a tough one. I love both equally, but they cater to two different ends of the racing spectrum. Though, to make this poll less one sided, I'm gonna vote for Sega Rally. It's so much fun...

4. Panzer Dragoon Saga vs. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64): I've never played PDS, so I can't choose it. OoT is a classic and I still love it to this day (though IMO Majora's Mask is better).

5. Panzer Dragoon II Zwei vs. Sin & Punishment: Successor of the Earth (N64): I've never played Sin & Punishment, so the award goes to PDZ, which I have played before. It's not a half bad shooter and it's fun to play.

Wow it's like a contest over whether you'd like to get salmonella poisoning or a staph infection lol.

IMO they're both horrible atrocities upon the world of video gaming, but I'm voting for N64 for one reason alone - Goldeneye.

This was a damn tough choice.
But Radiant Silvergun and Panzer Dragoon Zwei offer more replay (imo) than all the other (except maybe Sin & Punishment) N64 games combined.

Saturn wins.

edit: btw, I purchased Panzer Dragoon Saga back while I was right near the end of Zelda OoT, and I never touched Zelda again.

If I was stranded with multiple controllers and other people, then N64 easily for the multiplayer capabilities, especially with 3 or 4 people... And the fact I don't care for most of those saturn games... not one proper flying 3D shooter/railshooter on the Saturn, but there's Star Fox 64 on the N64. (Panzer Dragoon might have shifted my interest though, but SF64 has multiplayer...)
SM64 easy, solid 3D platformer vs Nights which is OK, but not my cup o' tea.

Though I don't really care for Sin and Punisher at all, not my kind of railshooter... Panzer Dragoon Zwei seems OK, but I'm almost sure I prefer the first Panzer Dragoon's flying gameplay.
Radiant Silvergun is a totally different kind of game and 2D perspective shmups are great too, but not up to 3D railshooters IMO...

Plus you seem to make the assumption that the consoles are region modded... while fairly easy on the N64 (only physical lock-out), the Saturn needs a mod-chip. And then there's the language barrier.


Now one thing the Saturn does have that the N64 lacks is actual flight/space combat Sims, but very few (PSX has a lot more)... if you include imports Stellar Assault SS would be significant, though there is the language barrier to some extent. (not so much tough to figure out that game though due to its more arcade style rather than sme more serious space/flight sims like Wing Commander or X-Wing, and the PSX had the Colony Wars series on top of Wing Commander III and IV)
N64 has Lucas Art's starwars flying games, of course, but that's more arcade than sim style... probably ahead of Stellar Assault nonetheless. (unless SA has multiplayer)


So from your list, N64 easy... with my own ideal list and in the context of me being stranded alone with the full all-region libraries, maybe Saturn (it would be close at least), but with others, N64 multiplayer is an easy win. (and my list with multiplayer in mid would definitely include SSB and Mario Kart, probably F-ZeroX over Wipeout64, but if only 2 people, Episode 1 Racer, of sure, with more, other games have an advantage -Episode one for sure in terms of single player gameplay).

NiGHTS.

There's no contest. It's the SEGA Saturn. Sega Rally > F-Zero, Panzer Dragoon Saga > Every RPG ever, Panzer Dragoon II over Sin and Punishment. Only one that wins here is Starfox 64 for me, I don't really care for 2D Shmups.

But I do love me some Nintendo 64 too, that's my 3rd favorite console behind Saturn and Genesis/Sega CD/32x. So yeah.

Saturn. SATURN.

All ten of those are fantastic games, but I would go with the N64 in all five comparisons, though several of them are close...

Mario 64 - NiGHTS -- Mario 64 is one of the greatest and most innovative games of all time, one of the top gaming masterpieces ever made. NiGHTS is a great game, one of the best Saturn games probably, but can't match Mario 64. Nothing could.

Star Fox 64 - Radiant Silvergun -- This was probably the most difficult one to decide... they're quite different games. Compare Radiant Silvergun to Star Soldier Vanishing Earth (the one shmup released in the US on N64) and yes, it'd be easy; I like Star Soldier quite a bit, actually, but it's no Radiant Silvergun. Bangaioh would be closer... of course, that is another Treasure game, and not a shmup (it's not railed, you freely fly around), but that is an amazing game. It's too bad the N64 version is so expensive. Anyway, as for Star Fox 64, it is one of my favorite N64 games, and is probably my favorite rail shooter ever (it's either that or the Panzer Dragoon games, nothing else is close), while Radiant Silvergun is of course also amazing... I have to give Star Fox 64 the edge, the game is utterly brilliant while I do have a few issues with Radiant Silvergun (six weapons, each with its own button? In a shmup? Was that really a good idea), but both are utterly brilliant games.

F-Zero X - Sega Rally -- F-Zero X is the easy winner, as I love futuristic racing games and all three major F-Zero games, but Sega Rally is also absolutely a very, very good game; again Nintendo wins, but the only major bad thing I can say about the Sega title is that it's too short (three/four tracks) and too hard (actually getting to the fourth track is incredibly difficult). I like F-Zero X's much longer game better; it's really amazing how long it took Sega to figure out how to design a decent console racing game... really, all of their Saturn racing games are completely lacking in any of the things I'd expect racing games to have -- campaigns, circuits, actual longevity besides "try to do it faster", etc... Sega Rally is a great, great game, but that design is annoying. Oh, and every racing game on the N64 has at least 2 player splitscreen, and somewhere around half have four player. On the Saturn, you're lucky when a game has even just a 2 player mode, forget more than that. Sega Rally does have a 2 player mode, but F-Zero X has four...

Zelda - The Ocarina of Time - PD Saga - OoT is the best console game ever made. PD Saga's great, sure, but matching that? No. It's much shorter too, with a fairly short length and much less reason to go back and play it more.

Sin & Punishment - Panzer Dragoon II - Zwei -- This was another difficult one. Both of these games are spectacular games, among the best rail shooters ever along with Star Fox 64, Panzer Dragoon, Space Harrier, and Panzer Dragoon Orta (that would by my list of the best games in that genre; perhaps After Burner and SoulStar could get runner-ups?). Neither one of these games is as good as Star Fox 64, I must say again, but they are both exceptional games. Both are also too short, unfortunately, but try to make up for it with their extremely high quality. I guess I'd give Sin & Punishment the edge, but not by much.

Oh, as for the Panzer Dragoon series in general, perhaps just because it was more original and I like the soundtrack a bit better, I might like PD 1 a little more than Zwei... Zwei adds a lot of fantastic stuff like saving, unlockables (instead of just "unlocking" stuff via cheatcodes every time you wanted to use them), branching paths, etc., but the original one was just such an incredible game... oh, and Orta is unbelivable as well, I like that at least as much as the Saturn games. The series overall is definitely the best rail shooter series ever (Star Fox 64 may be my favorite game in the genre, perhaps (deciding between it, PD1, PDO, and Sin & Punishment isn't easy) but that game is head and shoulders better than any other Star Fox title, that franchise overall can't compare...). It's kind of tough to rank them. :)

I never did get what the big deal about Sario 64 err I mean Mario 64. Granted back then I was all Sega but I did enjoy a few N64 games. The media wanted to proclaim Mario 64 as being the best game ever up until that point. And IMO it just never lived up to the massive amount of hype. NiGHTS was more fun IMO anyways.

There were a handful of 2D games on the N64 or 2D styled ones more often, but as for actual 2D (retro arcade compilations aside). There's Yoshi's Story (almost all 2D except for the cutscene animations), Rampage Wold Tour, Rampage Universal Tour, and a few others including Mischeif Makers as you said.
I suppose you might count Killer Instinct Gold, though the BG was rendered 3D on the N64. (streaming in the arcade)

I think the cost of carts is what prohibited ports.... that and the focus on the high accuracy "fast 3D" microcode (turbo 3D seems better suited to 2D with much more polygons -or 2D tiles- with less additional effects, let alone a hypothetical dedicated 2D optimized microcode implementation).
Even so you'd think the large amount of RAM and use of ROM carts would have attracted some animation-heavy 2D arcade ports, especially fighters. (I'd think that even carts on the smaller/medium size -8-16 MB- of the N64 would have been fairly reasonable for such games, but still nowhere as cheap as the PSX)

It was the first really open massive 3D platformer with good control adequate camera, excellent game design, lots of exploration and replay value with huge worlds, etc, etc.

I'm a fan of 3D platformers though... Mario 64, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Mario Sunshine, and maybe one or 2 others would be on the top of my list. (maybe some of RARE's though I'd categorize most of those more as 3D adventure games, maybe one of the Spyro games: Croc was OK, but not super amazing, I never too much cared for the Crash games, and there's a few more obscure games to note too)
I really dislike Mario Galaxy though... :yuck: Mario Galaxy 2 is a little better, but not my kind of game at all.

That genre is still behind flight/space combat sims, arcade style flying games and rail shooters, adventure games (depending how you split the genre it ranges from graphic adventures, 2D action/adventure games, 3D action/adventure games, etc -even a bit of text adventures, but not too much of that). Some RPGs might fit here too, but that's a big range.
-After that maybe 3D racing games, especially sci-fi/future styled ones, though 3D platformers are really close. FPSs would be in there too somewhere, though that depends on the game more and whether you're talking multiplayer or not.
-Then other vehicle combat sims, especially the Mech Warrior series.
-Then you get down to 2D platformers and shooters, though some exceptional ones would be closer to the top of my list. Some shmups (especially vertical) are among those exceptions. (though some cross over into the railshooter range anyway, silpheed is a little like that -both the 80s original and remakes -PS2 version isn't so good though)
-Fighters and beat-em-ups would be below that, don't really care for those, not so much for run n' gun games either, there are exceptions but in general not my thing.
I'm up for some good classic 70s/early 80s style arcade games too, especially shooters and some of williams' games. (Joust is awesome, I suck at Robotron 2084 too much to enjoy it though... except on super easy custom settings, Sinistar is pretty good) A lot of those are good for quick fun, though some are more involving. Atari's Star Wars and ESB arcade games are awesome too, but no surprise given they're railshooters; I'm rather partial to the battlezone too.


Now that's not just new games but games going back to the 80s and early 90s too, though the 80s ones (and some late 70s ones) I've only become acquainted with more recently.

I like the sidescrolling games enough to merit collecting for the Genesis, but the Sega CD (and 32x) actually have some of the most compelling games in my favorite genres, including some notable exclusives. Several of the sonic games along with Yoshi's island are real exceptions for me, those games are exceptionally fun, especially Sonic 3&Knuckles and Yoshi's Island. (not least because of the save features)

Nights got boring REALLY fast for me. I can't count how long i played mario 64 trying to get all those stupid stars. When M64 came out, it really was ahead of it's time. I have to go with this one.

Being a huge starfox fan, i have to give this the nod. i can't say i loved everything about it, but damned if i didn't have fun with it. I loved starfox so much when i found out it was coming out i pre-ordered it in san jose and had my uncle ship it to me to fresno when it came in, because that's where i happened to be when i saw pre-orders being taken.

3. Sega Rally (Saturn) vs. F-Zero X (N64)
Sega rally wins hands down, i can't stand f-Zero. At all.

4. Panzer Dragoon Saga vs. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Umm, i'll go with zelda only because i watched my brother play this game the entire way through. Saga was cool but i couldn't get into it.

5. Panzer Dragoon II Zwei vs. Sin & Punishment: Successor of the Earth (N64)
Never played either.

for me, the saturn was a bust. Admittedly my game selection was limited to fighters and a few racing games, but i never quite liked how things controlled or reacted on it. The system itself felt flawed to me.

I love Star Fox 64 but NiGHTS into Dreams and Panzer Dragoon Saga are probably in my top 10 games period list. So it's an easy win for Saturn here.

The Saturn easily wins, other then Goldeneye, the N64 had just ok games at best(sorry I'm not a fan of the 3D Zelda games, while the genre does support such a format, and Nintendo actually tried to make a great game, unlike others companies that make the switch, they still missed the mark in every single 3D Zelda game, plus on top of that you have bad camera angles in certain parts of the games. Also they seem to be getting worse with each iteration of the 3D Zelda format).

Nights into dreams is a much better game than mario 64. M64 is a very innovative and important game, but Nights is more fun.

Unless you don't like 3D platformers in general I don't see how that would be the case. (I for one generally prefer 3D platformers to 2D... though among the 2D platformers I really like are several sonic titles, especially 3&K, and Yoshi's Island, don't care so much for SMB/2/3/SMW by comparison to those or many 3D platformers -though neither of those genres are my favorite as I mentioned above -maybe not even in my top 5 favorite genres)

Nights into dreams is a much better game than mario 64. M64 is a very innovative and important game, but Nights is more fun.

I can see that, but Nights isn't my kind of game... well to be honest I haven't played it much, but I've seen most of the game and how the mechanics work and it's not appealing... I actually initially thought it was a fantasy style 3D railshooter (in line with panorama cotton), but that's not the case.
Panzer Dragoon would be much more significant for me personally. (that's my kind of game, or among the many genres I really enjoy in general)

How about 007 The World is Not Enough or Quake II?
A huge part of what makes Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and 007 TWINE is the multiplayer. (in PD's case also coopertive multiplayer, albeit limiting framerate further so not nearly as enjoyable as Halo or such)
