I concur. I would have loved to have seen more Sierra and Lucasarts adventure games ported to the Sega CD. Oh well, at least we got Monkey Island.
Not to rain on the parade, but I don't think Sam & Max would have been possible. Or at least, it would have been severely restricted. SoMI has slowdown and very limited colors, trying to do that with an even more advanced game would result in a worse product. Like Team said, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Loom and Money Island 2 would have been much more possible.
According to old news I read some time ago, Fate of Atlantis would have been slated for release if SOMI had sold better.
How much of that was down to working on a new machine, or the Team that was picked to port the game. Rise of the Dragon is a utterly brilliant port on the Mega CD.
Sure loading times would have been an issue, but I think with the right Team and enough money and resources. The Mega CD could have pulled off more than respectable ports of LucasArt Point and Click games around at the time
I've never played Rise of the Dragon unfortunately, so I can't voice an opinion on it. I'm just going by Secret of Money Island and other Sega CD releases. Does RotD have good colors and not too much slowdown?
Rise of the Dragoon has next to no slowdown , and colours well unless you play the PC version right next to Mega Cd Ver, you''ll not notice or have any problems. My mate had the disc based version on PC, and he said thanks to the full speech on the Mega Cd version, he was quite impressed at how much better the port was
But they again GameArts were just a class outfit on the Mega Cd
I agree. Rise of the Dragon is a favorite of mine, one I've actually been dying to pop in all week. Day of the Tentacle is another game I would have loved to have seen on the Sega CD.
RotD doesn't really have any slowdown, but you can attribute that to a serious lack of moving sprites, and backgrounds that are essentially static images. Also, the colors are pretty muddy, but they actually fit the cyberpunk setting very well.
Does anyone know what Dark Seed never went gold? I always thought it looked like a great addition to the Sega CD point-and-click library. I was pretty let down when it never saw the light of day. Considering I saw plenty of advertisements for it in magazines I'm assuming it was all but finished.
It wouldn't have been as good as the enhanced CD version on the PC (was just installed to the HD, no streaming audio from what I remember). Everything was voiced. It was awesome. To replicate that on the SegaCD, it would have been slowed down by seeking whatever track (CDDA or streamed PCM). I doubt they could have fit all the spoken dialog in the areas on the SGCD version. Plus, the game would be downgraded in the visual department. That game was just beautiful looking on the VGA 18bit palette and clean monitor. The only reason to have a SegaCD, would be for the poor chumps that didn't have a PC-CD setup (or even a semi decent PC) :P Absolutely loved the PC version (DotT too)
Here in the UK, the magazine Mega Power reviewed it and it scored highly (90%+ IIRC). It looked much better than the Amiga version (which ran in the Amiga's 16-colour 640x480 mode) and comparable to the PC version.
I've been desperate for an ISO of this game for years but so far the only evidence of its existence I've found is a couple of forum posts from about half a decade ago mentioning it was up on Usenet.
I'm convinced this game was finished.
Edit: Here, towards the bottom, motley6 claims to have found an ISO on eMule.
Thanks for the info Crazy, it's much appreciated. If you ever do stumble upon an image file of the game let me know what you think of it.
I have no doubt the game was 100% finished before Vic Tokai canned the release, it'd be really nice to see how it stacks up compared to the rest of the Sega CD's adventure library.
