Dreamcast and CD-R

Hi,

I know that most of the DC can read CD-R, if you have a certain model:

I also read that the DC can play NES (And others too, I don't know them a lot) games if you burn the ROM on a CD.
But a website told be that putting CD-R in the DC can burn the laser or something like that. Oo
Is it true?

I have absolutely no intention of burning DC games with this process. I lost my NES AC adaptor, I can't play to it anymore. If I could just burn the NES games that I have (About 5) on a CD to play it on my Dreamcast, it would be awesome! Is it possible to burn N64 games too? I would do the same thing here with the games I have.

Ah yes, is this ''Emulation'' allow me to play at 2 players?

Is this dangerous for the console using CD-R?

I've not heard of CD-R's hurting Dreamcast lasers.
I myself have been playing burned games since 2002 on my Dreamcast, and it still works perfectly.

That's a launch Dreamcast too, I got it in September 1999.

But there's a model that's supported and another that's not apparently.

If I remember the NES emulation worked. The Genesis one didn't seem to. 2 players not sure. There was speculation that the laser would have to read a cdr differently and shorten its life but it does not seem to be the case.

CD-Rs are generally safe to use. If the burnt program isn't "dummied" (nonvalid data used to push the game to the outside of the disc), you can put extra wear on the GD-ROM drive though.

As for which Dreamcasts have the CD exploit, I'm pretty the cut-off point is July 2001, but I might be wrong.

I'm sure using better media will help life as well, I've test Memorex, Sony, and TDK without issue so far.

NesterDC is a pretty good working emulator, not so hard to build your own or even find a pre-compiled disc *cough* 2400 *cough*. With 7.1 I got 2 player working fine on Dr. Mario with the girlfriend. Just make sure the controller is plugged in before you start the system.

I don't know about N64 compatibly, I know there is Bleemcast to emulate PS1 games and most people seem to like.

For N64, probably better on PC since you can find enhanced texture paks to make the game a million times better!

I never had any problems with my laser dying out on me while playing CD-R games. My Dreamcast was manufactured in August 1999 but I've only been playing burned games for about three years.

Nah, AFAIK Nero doesn't burn cdi files. I suggest Alcohol 120%, use the RAW/DAO mode at the lowest speed possible. I know alot of people prefer Disk Juggler, but I've had more succesful burns with Alcohol. Hope this helps.

I'd probably give Alcohol 120% a try. I burn my discs (TDK) with Disc Juggler for my emulators at the lowest speed and the NES one decides to reset back to the menu at the worst times, and the Genesis one likes to just crash completely on the menu. Weird stuff.

if you come across .nrg , that is a nero file natively, I haven't found one yet.

For me. had 100% success so far and no coasters.

.cdi = bootdreams 1.06c using ImgRecord, 8x seems locked in no matter if I select lower though(discJuggler gives runtime errors on a few games for me)
.bin/.cue = IMGburn (even burning full speed hasn't been an issue, and IMGBurn is free!)


BTW, Using Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit.

Best burning software I've ever used.

Nero can burn DC discs just fine. The issue is that must DC disc images (pirate games or homebrew) are in DiscJuggler format. There is a utility for the DC that converts DJ format to Nero format, and then you burn THAT using Nero. That's what I do. It's included with SBInducer and is called cdi2nero. You can find it by itself by googling that name.

Personally I use Nero for almost everything, but I also use Daemon Tools Lite, which is a virtual CD Rom drive that loads almost any kind of image. If Nero can't burn it, load the image in Daemon Tools and do a CD-CD copy. I don't think I've run across anything that wouldn't burn.

That being said, I don't have a clue what kind of formats DC disc images use, I generally burn PC Engine and Saturn games.

Nester DC does indeed support two players, just tested it on my disc. It also supports savestates and gamesaves to VMU, which is awesome. I love using NesterDC for the autobuilding setup which gives you images of carts, box art, screenshots, manuals, game genie codes......yea its sweet.
