Are those boxes really rare? I must say I like the looks of that Genesis(?) carrying case.
Im pretty positive the DC boxes are VERY rare. They were only given to select game stores to promote upcoming games and then surely most of them were thrown in the trash 10 years ago and were never available to the public.
Yep its a Genesis Model 1 Blockbuster rental case! :D
Well some stores gave the boxes away to regular customers, I know I got a few stashed in my collection somewhere, and I've seen 4 of those blockbuster cases at a local retro game shop going for like 10 bucks a piece
Just because the demand isn't high doesn't mean that they aren't obscure/cool. It's one of those Priceless vs Worthless kind of things, like labels for unreleased games.
ya well there are ZERO of the DC boxes on ebay current or completed that I saw. I didnt check the Genesis case but ive never seen one before... Well see how they do on ebay soon. ;)
salsays, Id be curious to see which DC game boxes you have. :)
To KevInCal: Do you know if they made a box for each DC title, that a participating store carried(simular to the Vidpro cards in other stores)?
PS. I didn't know anyone did the box thing back then.
Are Vidpro cards just like store display units or something?
Well basically, they display the front, and back of the actual game's box, that would be locked in a glass case(this way they don't have to open the case every time someone wants to check out a game, thus is why there is literally a vidpro card for every game, from when they started).
The box system is a bit different, while the Vidpro Cards did that as well(since they are issued before the game is released)from what I can tell, the only use the boxes have in the store, is to display a game before It's released.
You would be amazed at how interesting certian ones can be, the stories they can tell(alternative box art, that was later changed at the last minute when the game came out, and such), nvm if you end up snagging a prototype of a vidpro card for a game that had a colorful history to begin with(I still can't believe I got that).
I don't know if they made a box for each DC title, but I am kind of doubting it... I got these boxes from a guy who owned/ran video game stores for 20+ years. I would be very interested to hear any more info about these boxes though. :) I think they are very cool. And guess what, I have a bunch more for the PS2, PS1, GBA & GB color! :D I think I have a Grand Theft Auto III cardboard box for ps2 that has much cooler boxart than the release version. ;) And I am guessing at least several of the boxes I have, have different box art than the released version.
*edit* I just noticed one of the boxes I have is for an unreleased DC game, Half-Life. :D Pretty darn cool.
And after a quick search on ePay I see theres only 1 genesis hard carrying case in active or completed listings, and its for the model 1/cd system combo. :)

Ok, so then it was basically run the same way as it is today.
Oh wow, didn't realize Half Life was a unreleased game, nice.
PS2/360 boxes are probally not worth much in general, nor are they even rare, as what ever company makes them, seems to be making much more(and for more titles), then ever before.
I would be interested to know what PS1 boxes you own(depending if certain games had one issued, and you have it, you might've hit gold).
PS. As far as the case goes, while It's fairly rare, It's not worth much, so It's usally not even worth selling on ebay(the only reason this seller is, because It's a lot auction, so searching ebay is probally not a good way to rate the rarity of that item).
I dunno last time I checked ebay has been for, over 10 years now, THE place to determine the rarity and value of anything video game related... ;) Everyone and their mom uses ebay now so if i check ebay for certain items and none are to be found then i can safely say the item is rare. That's just how I feel... AFter all, look how many "rare" games etc sell on ebay for over 50 bucks when in actuality there are 50 or more copies of that "rare" game on ebay at any given time. So in reality those games arent TRULY rare, atleast in the sense that they are not hard to find or buy. Now my genesis case and dc boxes, those are extremely hard to find / buy for most people. ;) Cant just go on ebay and buy them like most anything else gaming related.
Games/typical game related items are one thing, but a case that is only worth 10-20(that probally wont sell easily) is a different story, the effort required to list the item, and such(by its self), nvm shipping(because you know people count that cost into their bid as well)is too much for what you'll get(this is a great flea market or toy/game convention item though).
Hell the shipping cost alone would be what It's basically worth(no room for making money, that's for sure).
we'll see about that. ;) im gonna ship the case media mail anyway... to hell with parcel post or priority. Good thing im am in good with the ladies at the USPS counter. ;) They never bother me about what im shipping media mail...
lol why are you so convinced the case is worthless anyway? where do you get your info from!? exactly.. last time i checked there are A LOT of Genesis fans who collect Genesis stuff all over the world and i have been gaming since the late 80s and never have seen a blockbuster genesis model 1 rental case IN MY LIFE...........................
and ya, that guy up there salsays ; says he has seen 4 cases at his local shop or w/e But we have to keep in mind he is in Los Angeles... most people dont live in cities like LA where you can find ANYTHING rare... plus those are at a shop, not available to buy online. Quite a difference there. Plus I doubt all 4 of them are the exact model i have, infact good chance none of them are just like mine.
anyway, its not nice to say my case is worthless so please stop with that. ;) its your OPINION and nothing else... i know its rare and i know i will be able to make some decent money from it. ;) so enough with this ok. i think you and i are done with this convo, agree?
PS - i dunno where you get your info from, again, but i know i have owned a couple jag blockbuster cases and a virtual boy bb case and i made over $100 on EACH of those, for JUST the cases... thats why its kinda annoying me you sitting here saying this genny case is worthless when you arent backing it up with facts yet i do have some facts heh...
I never said It's worthless, but It's not worth much(It's worth between 10-20$), this is not an opinion, it is fact.
Rare does not always mean It's worth a lot(uhh, media mail, oh god I hate it when sellers ship media mail, oh well I suppose if you insist on selling it online, that's the only way you'll make money.
The reason that the Jag and VB case sold for that amount could be that they are more rare than a Genesis version. I bought the PS1 version a while back for $8 plus shipping. I have seen the Saturn version for sale as well, but it went for more than I was willing to pay. Especially since it is the same box, just with a Saturn sticker on the outside and the inside foam cut differently.
