I guess I'm weird, but I never looked at a console and judged it by its design. None of my consoles are better or worse-looking than any of the others; they just ...are.

Are you speaking from a purely aesthetic point of view? The hardwired controllers come to mind (and the lack of RCA-connectors on the 1st model), but other than that the design is actually more functional than the US/EU version they released with the horrible cartridge port problems. It also looks pretty much like any 80's top-loader would.
I'd have to agree that the Master System (US) was seriously more stylish than the toaster model NES. That is, even before most cases started yellowing, the Master System looks like a Ferrari compared to the NES' Full Size Van.
Since we're talking about this, and I'm too lazy to find a "post your setup" thread, I thought I'd show all of my current consoles in a single pic:

Who can tell the difference between the ones that look like a Ferrari and the ones that look like a box? ;)
How the heck do we force image downsizing in this GUI anyway?
I think the DC is a great looking console. And, call me crazy, but I also think the N64 is cool too. I think it's rounded edges and curves give it an almost old-fashioned look that is unlike any other console.
1. Genesis Model 2
2. Sega Dreamcast
3. N64 (im not a fan of the N64 honestly, but the design is nice)
My vote is the NEO-GEO AES system.
How is the answer to this question not obviously the RG-M1 Wondermega?
Although if you want to look at consoles and variants released outside of Japan, I do have a soft sport for the redesigned SNES. Even if they cut out the nicer video output options, it's still a nice looking and delightfully slim console -- and unlike the Genesis Model 3, you're not locking yourself out of any add-ons by getting it!
I think the 7800 is one of the best looking of all time...

Aren't there rules about grave digging here?
I still stand by my main vote for the Neo Geo console, but the following looks great too:
NES Top Loader
SMS Model 1
Genesis Model 1
Sega CD Model 1 (too bad it's so unreliable)
Sega 32X (probably alone on this one)
Sega CDX
Saturn
N64
Dreamcast
3DO FZ-10
Turbo Duo
Im partial to the 5200, PC-Engine, and Mark III
Atari 7800
Japanese Mega Drive (model 1)
Mega CD (model 2)
Panasonic 3DO FZ-10
Model 1 Genesis and the Dreamcast are my definite favorites.
Though this is assuming Gamecube doesn't count, I don't know if it's considered retro yet.

The Darth Vader
I would say Genesis Model 1 for consoles.
For portable, I gotta say Game Boy Advance SP best design ever for a portable, the perfect size imo (micro would be sexy, but it cant play gb/gbc games).
Now nintendo likes makin BIGGER versions of their portables, ah the days when we could fit it into our pocket (The sp is still the most recent portable system I own, I have silver)
