The Fall of a Forum...

In 2004, I signed up to a forum and I was a regular there for about three years.

Anyway long story short, the admins were corrupt as fuck and me, being a stupid kid, I caused trouble and got myself banned.

In 2008, I joined Sega 16. Hoping to put the past behind me, I started using an all-new username and kept myself to myself.

Yesterday, I went back to that forum. It's now a shadow of it's former self.

The head admin has allowed anyone to post spam and doesn't care about the forums anymore (not that he did a good job in the begining that is...).

So my question is really to Melf - If Sega 16 went the way of the dinosaur, you wouldn't let it get it that level would you?

EDIT: By the way, I respect the admins and mods here. It was the staff at the other forum that I had disliked.

Hey, I know what you mean. Old forums I used to frequent are now filled with nothing but spambots and no actual users, and hardly any of the links work. It's a bit saddening actually.

i guess the internet springs to life in new areas while old ones die out.

It wasnt DC Forums was it cuz it was like that then and now.

I was just very straight talking and they didnt like it so i got banned. Before the big swap over of all the admins and mods the forum was really good. Now I think only the "click" go there and if anyone else goes there they get hounded out.

I don't want to reveal the site, if I do they're just trace me back here and cause Sega 16 heap loads of shit.

Y, some forum posters have no clue about what's humorous and what's not.

I will name names about forums:

I tried something called Nintendo-Scene for a short while. The biggest problem, and the reason I will never go there ever again, is because the forum regulars have a real issue with answering questions for newbs. Almost like Newbs have a disease or something. Thankfully, Sega-16 was not like that from the get-go.:)

I frequent Atari Age, but there are some admins there (not all) who taunt and antagonize the posters. To me, that is plain wrong. The admins should be there as a neutral parties. Albert Yarusso is the site's owner and unfortunately does not tell his admins to knock off the bad act.

One other thing about Atari Age: There are a couple of forum members who are seen as gods over there. The posting names are Wgungfu and Curt Vendel. Evidently, both of these guys once worked as programmers for Atari back in the day. Because of their perceived clout, they are allowed to talk any way they want to towards other forum posters. Again, this is plain wrong. If you speak up against either of them in any of their threads, you will promptly be blocked from said threads by the antagonistic admins. Albert doesn't want anyone offending his babies over there at AA.:D

Basically, every other gaming forum I have posted on has been mostly pleasant. Unfortunately, you will find idiots at any and all forum sites. I try to overlook them if at all possible.

I disagree. Spambots in possession of such high-level deductive powers could prove to be pretty useful around here. They could tell our fortunes, recount our past lives, and maybe even help me with my fantasy football picks later this year.

I've been to at least one forum with some of the worst trolls ever. Didn't last long there, I don't put up with bull**** users for very long.

Defunct forums perish for various reasons. Sometimes the raison d'être for a specific community is no longer 'net-worthy' (e.g. abandonware forums) and is replaced by something else (retro gaming). Other times the forum serves its purpose (specific events, community projects etc) and nobody bothers to contribute anymore. Excessive/lax moderating and lack of interesting discussions can kill message boards as well.

And I never posted it for pity or attention - please get your facts right before jumping to that conclusion.

I do agree the whole "tags" thing needs to stop. In the thread that forum member Water Faller, posted about his relationship, there were some hurtful tags attached to his thread.

I've had some asshat tags for a few of my threads, but it doesn't really effect me. They aren't really clever, funny, or hurtful; Just stupid. However, I've never had a touchy subject been mocked in a tag so I'm probably not one to speak up.

I vote for getting rid of tags or the only person who should be allowed to make tags for a thread is the original poster.

Or better yet, whoever makes a tag should have their name attached to it so we're all held accountable for what we say.

Tags are an adequate tool for cowards, from my view those wont affect me for instance. By the way, i don't agree that this is not a site to find support, probably you just need a precise thread title to find some advice on your concern, you have my moral support sorry to hear that, and remember when you have convictions or are a determined person, words or offenses are as dangerous as fresh breeze in your face.

Sadly I find this all too common and it tends to be a big problem on old forums that cover rather niche topics but actually have a fair amount of members. Any requests for info or attempts to discuss topics that have come up before (and by before I mean years ago) tend to be met with the responses along the lines of "WTF GTFO NOOB". The situation also tends to be made worse by the "I'm a big dog" attitude of some of the long time members, along with the self congratulatory backslapping that goes on between them. That tends to be their fate in the end too, just a few old timers telling each other how great they are while everyone else has left.

Luckily this is a nice, well moderated community without people trying to win debates using the "I've been here longer than you so shut up" method. Well done admins and mods!

I have been at AA for over 7 years and I haven't seen any examples of what you're talking about.

The thing is.. many of us have already experienced this from the other side,
you're in a forum, you get to know these people, they get to know you.

You're feeling at home, you talk with them about life and games and all the other things that you like,
fun times are had discussing all these things, and life feels good.

then, this new kid comes in.. bumping all these old posts, and making short replies that mean absolutely nothing.

You're annoyed, your friends are annoyed.. and you kinda wish that newbie would just fuck off cause's so damn annoying.

so you give him a hint, and they give him hints, maybe even outright ask him to stop being so annoying,
and of course he'll throw a hissy fit, saying how everybody likes him except the "so called gods" of the forum.
how its not his fault because he's been diagnosed with "random problem" and how they are assholes for not accepting that.

he sends people stupid pm's, he rants and eventually makes a thread demanding that people stop being so mean.

he ends up getting banned and the forum continues like it did before,
and everybody is already forgetting about that annoying little kid.

except for the little kid.. he's planning his comeback with a proxxy and a different user name,
because if there's one thing he has to do is go back there, he has to go back
and be part of this group! no matter how long it takes they will like him!

he gets found out and ends up getting banned again, and maybe he'll try a 2nd comeback, maybe not.

a couple years later he has matured and finally understands all he did wrong back then,
so he goes back to the forum and finds it has changed quite a bit,
all these people that he once hated have moved on, and the forum
like the towns of the old west has now changed into a deserted place.

this confuses the guy, he expected to make a grand return, to be welcomed with open arms!

but alas, everybody has moved on.

so he decides to do the same, and he ends up on a forum where people like him for who he is,
and everybody is having a great time talking about movies and games and music and whatnot.

then one day a newbie arrived, and the first thing he did was bump a post from 2005..

I didn't even bump any threads at Nintendo-Scene. Just asked questions about problems I was having with my NES and Gamecube, then noticed that hundreds of people had viewed my posts, but not a single response. Amazing how not one in hundreds would even respond to my posts.

Sad, but true. In one instance, I questioned Curt Vendel about the reality of the Atari Flashback 3 system ever being released. He used a sarcastic comment toward me, and then Wgungfu chimed in by basically calling me an idiot for such a comment. I responded by commenting that I knew who Curt was, but did not know who this "Wgungfu" character was. Next thing I know, I've been banned from that thread. The admin who banned me, CPUwiz, never told me why, but a friend who has been on the site for years told me that basically Curt and Wgungfu are protected property at AA. I committed the major sin of offending them. The funny thing is that was over a year ago and all the talk at that time was about the Flashback 3, but nothing has ever materialized. Oh, yah, they did release something called the Flashback 2+, and Curt Vendel is now on to working on an expansion module for the 7800 console. Hmmm, I wonder how the Flashback 3 will fare...

I've noticed that there's a clear correlation between the sort of tags someone makes versus how useful (or useless) the person actually is.

On another note, I see where The Jackal was coming form, for posting about his problems here. He has. I have. I've seen others do it. We're a fairly tightly-knit community here. It's nice to have people you can talk to about Sega, then turn around and be able to get things off your chest as well, you know?

Also NeoVamp, that rundown was eerily accurate.

Talk to friends, family, or at least a forum dedicating to listen to you air your frustrations. This is a site dedicated to a console from two fucking decades ago, it is not your blog or livejournal.

I half-agree.

Unlike Metal Sonic, I'm not offended by emotional displays, but I have no empathy when pity-bait backfires. If you're going to pour your heart out to ~60 anonymous internet users, you'd better have some pretty thick skin, because for every "Aww, poor baby" reaction you get, you're going to get some smartass who wants to make light of the situation with some wacky "meme" or tags.

It was Beef jerky man's post that affected me and made me write it to be honest. And yes; she's my sister. I can prove that without a shadow of a doubt.

I wish these things didn't happen, but they do.

But thats not the reason you created this thread in the first place,
the only reason you did is because you felt genuinely happy that this is a good forum.

but really, is it? or is it you who has changed since the last bad encounter?

most young people have a bad forum encounter at least once in their lives,
because they have personal issues, or are still just... well children!

and there's nothing wrong with that, but when they get in troubles like these
they often forget that not everybody on the other side of the screen is their age.


So my advice, let it go.. it was just a forum.

There's more important things in life, like the pursuit of happiness,
so don't think about these things anymore.

I agree with you NeoVamp. I've let stupid stuff in my past control my present. That includes telling you guys, when I shouldn't of.
