"Jap" is just an abbreviation of "Japanese". It's not meant as a derogatory term in this context. It's just an unfortunate coincidence that some people happen to use the same word as a derogatory term in unrelated contexts.
I've heard many black rap artists use the "Nigger-word", so why can't I?
You just haven't been to rap school.
I prefer JPN myself, "jap" sounds nasty in any context. How about: Nip? :D
I never understood the big deal about 'Jap.' Does anyone get their panties in a bunch over 'Brit?' It's the same as calling Americans 'Ames,' or something to that effect.
It has to do with WWII when we were killing "those god damned dirty japs". People were genuinely racist back then. The Japanese picked a hell of a time to attack the US. The day it happened Admiral Bull Halsey said "When this war is over, the Japanese language will be spoken only in hell" Can you imagine if General Petraeus said something like that today what would happen. Despite all of that I really don't think any one saying the word jap means it any more negatively than, Brit or Jew. Perhaps it is bit ignorant but I think comparing it to the N world is a stretch.
Yeah, not really comparable at all. I always understood it as an abbreviation ("Jap." for Japanese) before I even knew it was used as a derogatory term during WW2.
Alternatives would include (J), NTSC-J, JPN, JP,...
it's an abbreviation whats all the fuss about? Knightwarrior are you Japanese??? or are you just being offended "on behalf"
if so, you're retarded.
if you are indeed Japanese and find this offensive perhaps look deeper into your own feelings of contempt; afterall "JPN" is in itself still an abbreviate and should be just as "offensive" as 'Jap'
logic dictates this thread is simply stupid.
I doubt jap is as strong as nigger. It's an acceptable abbreviation. Anyone who gets seriously offended by it needs to get over themselves.
I find JAP stems from the English comparative, ENG (doesn't specify continent). Sorta like JP = US and JPN = USA.
I agree with 64k and VampX, plus I doubt most "younger" Japanese really know what it means, or if they do...doubt they really take offense.
If it really was a huge problem, then why the fuck hasn't Japan kicked the US off? Oh wait, it's not a problem. Sure there are some Marines and Sailors causing problems in Japan, every now and again, but for the most part...next to no beef between the two nations. Let it go.
Then i guess i shouldn't have deleted my post! http://www.sega-16.com/forum/images/icons/talking.gif
I thought i went a bit too far, so i deleted it.
but i'll try rephrase it a bit nicer.
I reallly, dislike people who suddenly go all super political correct,
Jap is short for Japan, and just because you happened to watch a documentary about racism doesn't make it a current thing,
through history there have been all kinds of words that were once deemed good and later changed meaning. (gay/fag/cheerio)
so why can't we change how we see the abbreviation "Jap" oh wait WE DID.
Its just you who can't let go of the past and has to dreg up stuff,
stuff 99% of young Japanese wouldn't give a shit about.
And now here we go again with the cruel and inappropriate tags!
What's wrong with you people? What's wrong with the world???
What cruel and inappropriate tags?
emotional tampon - okay this is a bit cruel, not much i kinda lolled but yeah maybe.
jap = japan - well thats true imo.
offended on behalf - seems like he is, so its true.
sensitivity class - this is true, through topics like these we learn to restrain ourselves
whenever a moron jumps in to complain about slurs already looooooooooooooooooong forgotten by man.
Political Correctness is whats ruining everything and taking the fun out of life.
Is it WW2?
If yes --------------> the word "Jap" is bad.
If no ----------------> un-bunch them panties.
I think the important thing to consider here is whether any Japanese people actually find it offensive.
None of my Jap' friends to my knowledge have ever taken offense to the term.
I've certainly never taken offense to being called a Brit or a Kraut, as long as there's no malice behind it who cares?
The idea that Jap' is in any way comparable to 'nigger' is frankly ludicrous.
I mean do you guys actually take offense to being called yanks?
I just use "JP". Short and sweet.
I choose not to use "Jap" but I don't get bent out of shape when others do.

I can say I take NO offense to being called a "spic". Probably because I use the word myself. Who knows.
I use JP or JPN, generally JP since its one letter less to write :P
I use JP. I live in the south and Jap is most certainly a derogatory term in many parts here. Would you say to an Asian person at work, "are you eating Jap food?" Fuck no you wouldn't.
Why can't we all just say "Japanese." Have we all just grown lazy?
I'm accustomed to writing "JAP", "JP", or more commonly just "J" when labeling games but JPN does sound much more professional. I also don't say Jap. I'm accustomed to saying Japanese whilst refraining from using acronyms. Just don't sweat the small stuff. That's like when this one guy at Space Cats kept pronouncing anime and manga with an American accent and the asian guy at the counter kept responding with the correct pronunciation in a somewhat irritated tone. Yeah, I was there. Some people just don't know or can help themselves. Not everyone speaks Japanese.
Getting a bit off topic:
Overpriced store it is. They told me the Nomad originally sold for $210 to justified their price for said price. Unbelievable!
I would and have, perhaps there's a bit of cultural devide here on how Americans view the term Jap' vs. the rest of the world.
Over here it's simply an abbreviation for Japanese, in the same way Polish are Poles, Russians are Ruskies, French are cheese eating surrender monkies.
There's no malice involved!
I know this French guy, and i always call him Frenchy, but sometimes i call him FRENCH SURRENDER MONKEY.
Political Correctness is ruining the world. People are afraid to say it like it is because it may offend a minority or majority for one minute. It take the fun out of life in many ways indeed. It is stiffing liberty and freedom. It halts creativity. It makes us all the same.
There are quite a few southerners that would take offense, but it's mostly because down here "yankee" refers more to the northeastern states, and not the US as a whole, and they forget that the Civil War was 150 years ago.
However, you could get away with it since they wouldn't be able to understand the Queen's English :)
I read some wear that in the hip hop community the N word can mean , Someone who does not work and uses hustling methods to get thru life and there music scene. If this is the case then everyone should now be able to understand why Black people call certain white guys the N word as well as Black and black
Not sure if thats true can someone correct me if this is wrong
Fuck no I wouldn't, I'd say "Are you eating Chinese food" because I prefer Chinese food.
I would only use the word "JAP" for shorthand, and that is mostly for gaming
My apathy towards the proper pronunciation of manga and anime increased tenfold reading this story.
