Is it just me or the new Sonic design makes him look goofy(really what the hell are the Japanese thinking when they pull this crap, almost all the old franchise that come from Japan have these crappy redigned char).
Remember when Sonic actually looked cool, remember when when the DW/DQ series was actually a series franchise(now It's a joke), and exc.
Just to make him look more real, I assume.
Browser the site. It has tons of Video Game related pics.
I like the Chun-Li one in the Anime section.
So far, Sega related I see 2 Sonic and 1 Knights [into dreams] pics.
I prefer sonic from the Original 3 and Knuckles. I don't like the weird long skinny arms and legs.
Wait.... these are FREE???? NO WAY!!!! OMG!!!!! *explodes*
This is better:

Shorten the arms/legs, restore his potbelly; we're good to go. Or at least stick with the Sonic CD JP art style.

I also prefer the 16-bit sprite. And, yet, I'm still waiting for the darn replacement to Sonic 4's free HD wallpaper: :D

...That one has been lingering on my desktop form months now...:(
Here's your temporary fix: http://a.imageshack.us/img37/8608/sonic4wallpaper.png
Jeez, may I ask what's with all the hate against new-style Sonic on this website? Am I the only person who prefers new-style Sonic around here?
It actually looks better than Sega's official Sonic 4 title screen! That's how Sonic should always appear!
... Though I kinda wish the island in the background had more detail... :(
Yes, you're the only one on this site. I'd also be careful admitting to that, Melf might cast his retro fury on your head. :ok:
He looks like a douche now.His legs and arms are too long, and he's too thin.
Sonic 1999-present looks like he's trying waaaaaaaaaaaay too hard,
Sega made him come across as one of those stupid "hey kidzzzzz don't do drugs" acts.
Remember that South Park episode where there's this show about how you shouldn't smoke/drugs or something?
to me thats how Sonic comes across, from cute mascot to forced cool tool.

I mean check out those pics, look at their faces, it just screams "I'M EXTREME BUY MY MERCHANDISE"
if Nintendo did that to Mario we'd be seeing this.
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/9941/marioyh.jpg
Look at that!, thats what Sega would have done to Mario if he were their property.
think about it, a forced extreme Mario in a world with people instead of Mushrooms,
and instead of yellow Wario they'd make a mario clone with black clothes and emo makeup, who's all confused because he's evil but not really,
he's kinda in between so buy his game where he rides his motorcycle and shoots people while finding out about his dark past.
Thats what Sega did to Sonic, they changed everything about Sonic that made him Sonic.
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/3866/soniclarge.jpg
This was Sonic, before Sega killed him and replaced him with this fake extreme freak.
I completely agree with NeoVamp.
Current Sonic is too EXTREEEEEEME. Reminds me of Buzz Bunny:
"I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was. Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's 'it' seems weird and scary to me."
If you ever get the itch for game wallpapers, hold your nose and have a poke around DeviantArt. There's some rather impressive fanworks up there! :)
I don't really like new-style Sonic, but honestly the Sonic in your avatar looks pretty good to me. I think because it's a cartoon it'll inherently look like how Sonic is supposed to look, while a 3D model will just look wrong.
On the other hand, I still think this
looks obnoxious, so there's clearly more to it than that.Quote:

I couldn't watch all of that video, but the point gets across.
Also, I absolutely hate Flash. It's one of the most lazy and disgusting forms of animation ever created. I've seen only a few flash animations out of hundreds that didn't want to make me puke. Give me traditional animation any day of the century.
In slight defence of the newer art style, I don't think the old pot-bellied style would have worked too well in 3D. Looks cool in 2D but I think it would make Sonic look like he's eaten a few too many pizzas in 3D. Tubby /= fast + sleek. The reverse seems true for the new style IMHO: looks decent in 3D, weird in 2D.
X-Treme Sonic=X-Treme failure

Thats the Mario I grew up on and he hasn't changed much WTF does Sega be thinking at times?
I do generally like both the old and new designs, though I'm much more fond of the newest Sonic design rather than the previous 3D ones. They refined it a lot more.

From this in Sonic Heroes...

To his current form in Sonic Unleashed, for example. He doesn't look so outlandish and X-TREME anymore.
I see my remarks have caused quite a stir in this thread. Just to comment on what some people have posted:
This right here is the kind of stuff I go for in all my Sonic the Hedgehog artwork I do. That's the kind of design I like, but even the older stuff back to Sonic Adventure looks good to me. For some reason, old-style Sonic from before Sonic Adventure just seems to be missing something.
He can go right ahead. I don't care, it's not going to change my opinion on whether I prefer old-style Sonic or new-style Sonic. And I'll be the first to admit that I prefer new-style Sonic. I'm not afraid to admit to anything, even if I'll be attacked for it. I'd rather be honest than just say a bunch of bullshit just because what I like is not what everyone else likes. The hell with that.
Definitely. I'm very picky when it comes to judging artwork, and most of the artwork I see strikes me as crap, but some of the artwork is just really well-made.
I believe the Sonic in my avatar is taken straight from Sonic X's artwork, which, while rather inconsistent from one scene to the next, looks quite good to me. I will replace it one of these days, though, by a character who I will not name as of yet as I'm not ready to do so.
Call me stupid, but I didn't see anything wrong with the past 15 years of Sonic aside from the horrible Sonic '06(probably 'cause I can put up with a lot of crap in a video game). I haven't played it myself, but just looking at the game makes it look to me like an unfinished Beta. Still, I want to get a copy because when I like a certain series, I want as many of the games released in the series as possible, even if they're shit. I'm doing this with Gradius and After Burner, and I'm also doing the same with the Sonic series(which ranks number 2 on my list of all-time favorite video game series).
Sometimes I feel like either making a Sonic the Hedgehog fangame or even an animated series similar to Sonic X, which I really liked, even though I watched the 4Kids version rather than the original Japanese version, but I'm now watching the Japanese version and now see the 4Kids version as heavily scaled down(what a surprise). Hell, if I were to make a fangame or an animation, I'd include everything that was left out of the 4Kids dub of Sonic X: swearing, blood, character deaths, etc.
You've got another Flash hater right here. Seriously, animations made in Flash generally look like crap. I'd stay as far away from that as possible if I were to make an animation. I'd stick with the time-consuming frame-by-frame animation. That generally looks a hell of a lot better.
fat sonic appeals to those who first got the genesis and saw sonic for the first time. that's the sonic we grew up with, before his crappy friends came by and when the game was all about saving birds and rabbits from dr robotnik.
i get that sonic changed and is all "xtreme" and shit, that's just not the sonic i remember and liked, and apparently alot of people feel the same way. you're free to like whichever sonic you want and enjoy whichever games you want to, but the first three sonics for me were the best and when they deviated from that formula, they lost me as a fan and customer.
I like the Sonic Adventure style a lot, and I have began to like the current design. They made him look like a kid in Sonic Advance, where as Sonic Advance looks more grown up and current design is like adult...
http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/9052/sonicheight.jpg
I noticed there's a clear link between someone's age and which Sonic they prefer,
0-24 = New Sonic
25-99 = Classic Sonic
Personally I'm glad i grew up on the fun Sonic, back when games were meant to be fun,
and not something to write extreme emo fanfics of.
I have no issues with height, I like the slim and tall figure. not so fun of the round fat body of older design.
I think some of you are over thinking certain things. It's not so much a problem because he's taller or even a bit skinnier for that matter, It's the fact that the praportion of sonic are a joke(off). His legs are so skinny, and long, it reminds me of the old cartoons, where a char would pull another char's neck until Its super longated, and as unstable as a piece of spaghetti.
Then you have the new color scheme, do they really think this makes him look more real, he looks like he's made of rubber for crying out loud(he looked much more real in the older sonic games or even in the "old" Sonic cartoon for that matter).
I could care less about Sega, after they dropped out of the hardware market they were dead to me and still are.
There are always exceptions to the rule, always.
But look at the rest of the people here, the majority of the members under 24 prefer new sonic.
While the majority of the older members prefer Classic Sonic.
Which proves they are different entities, a rift made only greater by the fact that the classic games and the new games are so completely different.
Mario on the other hand stayed quite the same, even his 3D adventures still resemble his 2D adventures.

This is my favourite Sonic design, and how it would look were it used for a new HD/2D Sonic.
Sonic's design to me is less of an issue than the quality of his 3D games. SA1+2 were playable for their time but the formula has aged pretty badly.
Just an FYI that's not my drawing :D Found it via an image search.
What, no shoe buckles? Fail.
Everybody knows you can't be extreme without cousin Jethro belt buckles hanging off your shoes.
I'm glad I got my game on early. If I didn't, I probably wouldn't like Sonic at all and just think he's another mediocre mascot in the industry and not give me the opportunity to remember him for what he was. What started it all was when I got my Genesis in '93 (Sonic 2 System). Yeah, I'm only 20 (turning 21 next month), but I remember it like it was yesterday. It completely blew away what I was playing on the NES at the time. Because I knew of Sonic then, I got me to watch to cartoon and that's pretty much how I started following him.
Like I said, I choose to remember them for what they were.
Slow it down a little bit NeoVamp. I first got into the Sonic series with Sonic 2 when I first got a Genesis in 2006. That was the very first Sonic design I became familiar with, then I moved on to the Sonic Adventure games(well, I actually got into Sonic X before that, which, as I said before, I really like) and then thought that new-style Sonic had a little something extra that I didn't see in old-style Sonic. Don't ask what it is 'cause I don't know. Maybe because I see more of a "cool" factor in new-style Sonic than old-style Sonic. Mind you, I don't mind either design, but I prefer new-style Sonic.
And is it just me or do the proportions look off in that HD rendition of Sonic's sprite from Sonic 3? And a little note: if you post artwork here, get ready for some nitpicking. I nitpick pretty much everything in any artwork done by fans, and this is not just for the Sonic series, it's the same with other video game series I like.
