Zillion one is best played if you can create some kind of cognate for the characters you have to remember. It is very fortunate that the characters do not have to be entered in the order you pulled them out of the canisters. I basically looked at the symbols and said aloud what they looked like to me (Alien, Geyser, Upside down Cup, etc.) This method got me all the way through the game without writing anything down. I did need the manual though for specific codes.
The American region SMS library really is almost full of games worth looking into. Here is the list I have compiled based on online gamer reviews (gamefaqs mostly).
Interesting, some more ideas?

Never knew the Sega Mastersystem had so many great games.
Though it's a bit unpolished in some ways, I found Rambo III to be very enjoyable. It makes good use of rapid fire with the SMS light gun and has some unique aspects to it like using the grenades to find hidden items. I also like how the grenades can harm civilians.
The symbols represent numbers. Once I found that out what they represent (with some help from Frogacuda), it was much easier for me to memorize the codes.
who moved me here??? This was Genesis topic!!!! Genesis can do MS!!!!

Well, after some time i got my PBC and it came with a game:Altered Beast, which IMO is a crappy game.
Ninja Gaiden is my highest recommendation for the Master System, I find better than all the NES Ninja Gaiden games. It's easier, better looking, with great music, and no slowdown what so ever on a system known to run at like 15 fps most of the time ;)
Truly a work of art.
Here's a gameplay video with some subtitles with info on the game:
Get:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Castle of Illusion
- Land of Illusion
The SMS is a great system and has really cool games to offer. The greatest strength is definately the jump'n run-genre.
Overall my SMS-recommendations are:
Phantasy Star (best 8-bit RPG)
Golden Axe Warrior (Zelda 1 with prettier graphics)
Master of Darkness (very good Castlevania clone)
Shinobi
Ninja Gaiden
Sonic 1 & 2
Castle, Land and Legend of Illusion (awesome jump'n runs)
Donald Duck: Lucky Dime Caper & Deep Duck Trouble
Wonder Boy III: Dragon's Trap
Power Strike 1 & 2
Ultima IV (if you like old computer RPGs)
Ghostbusters
Double Dragon
Batman Returns
Alex Kidd in Miracle World & in Shinobi World
Astιrix 1 - 3
Battletoads
Bubble Bobble
Fantasy Zone 1 & 2
R-Type
