And, well... Que disfrutes de tu ración de 8 bits.
mmm, interesting suggestoins, any one else?
Wonder Boy is all you need.
But in addition:
Out Run is great and one of my most played MS games.
Spellcaster (Kujaku-O) is a really neat action RPG.
Zillion is just class and has some of the best tunes ever.
Wonder Boy III is what Wonder Boy II should have been.
Sonic the Hedgehog is better than the Mega Drive version.
Space Harrier might be very chunky but there is something magical about it.
Edit:
Forgot to mention Phantasy Star which is just epic. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Ys (as I'm more of an action-RPGer) but it's great.

+ the ninja
sonic chaos ws one of my favorites
Zillion one is best played if you can create some kind of cognate for the characters you have to remember. It is very fortunate that the characters do not have to be entered in the order you pulled them out of the canisters. I basically looked at the symbols and said aloud what they looked like to me (Alien, Geyser, Upside down Cup, etc.) This method got me all the way through the game without writing anything down. I did need the manual though for specific codes.
The American region SMS library really is almost full of games worth looking into. Here is the list I have compiled based on online gamer reviews (gamefaqs mostly).
Interesting, some more ideas?

Never knew the Sega Mastersystem had so many great games.
Though it's a bit unpolished in some ways, I found Rambo III to be very enjoyable. It makes good use of rapid fire with the SMS light gun and has some unique aspects to it like using the grenades to find hidden items. I also like how the grenades can harm civilians.
The symbols represent numbers. Once I found that out what they represent (with some help from Frogacuda), it was much easier for me to memorize the codes.
who moved me here??? This was Genesis topic!!!! Genesis can do MS!!!!
ANARCHY!
RIOT! PILLAGE! BURN THIS MOTHER FUCKER TO THE GROUND!
**runs off looking for a garbage can to set on fire**
Well, after some time i got my PBC and it came with a game:Altered Beast, which IMO is a crappy game.
Ninja Gaiden is my highest recommendation for the Master System, I find better than all the NES Ninja Gaiden games. It's easier, better looking, with great music, and no slowdown what so ever on a system known to run at like 15 fps most of the time ;)
Truly a work of art.
Here's a gameplay video with some subtitles with info on the game:
Get:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Castle of Illusion
- Land of Illusion
The SMS is a great system and has really cool games to offer. The greatest strength is definately the jump'n run-genre.
Overall my SMS-recommendations are:
Phantasy Star (best 8-bit RPG)
Golden Axe Warrior (Zelda 1 with prettier graphics)
Master of Darkness (very good Castlevania clone)
Shinobi
Ninja Gaiden
Sonic 1 & 2
Castle, Land and Legend of Illusion (awesome jump'n runs)
Donald Duck: Lucky Dime Caper & Deep Duck Trouble
Wonder Boy III: Dragon's Trap
Power Strike 1 & 2
Ultima IV (if you like old computer RPGs)
Ghostbusters
Double Dragon
Batman Returns
Alex Kidd in Miracle World & in Shinobi World
Astérix 1 - 3
Battletoads
Bubble Bobble
Fantasy Zone 1 & 2
R-Type
This is not listing the games that have superior MD-versions.
If you decide to pick up the 3d glasses:
Zaxxon 3d
Blade Eagle 3d
Maze Hunter 3d
otherwise everyone else has already suggested good ones.
I have a soft spot in my heart for Miracle Warriors, but its not a good game.
Also, Kenseiden is worthy of its moniker as the SMS Castlevania (and its a pretty awesome game)
Kenseiden is good, granted; but when it comes to SMS Castlevania there is only Master of Darkness. The game looks and feels like a Castlevania hack.^^

EDIT: lol, too late! :)
I'd say Master of Darkness is the SMS castlevania ;)
Shinobi!
Not everybody likes it since it does have some graphical issues and the vertical scrolling is pretty bad, but the gameplay is decent enough if you want to play a watered-down version of the arcade game.
Yeh spellcaster I loved that game sonic 1 classic! Alex in miracle world, shinobi I only had a few games but they seemed to last forever they were hard as hell ESP alex
Really? I think they could've done a better job with the graphics based on the inspiration. The NES games had this slanted 3D-ish perspective to the backgrounds making them more interesting to look at, locations had more detail and originality to them and especially the enemies were more memorable with somewhat bigger sprites. As for music I don't think it comes close to the first NES game, but it's not bad. I hate how the music starts over when you move from one area to the next within a level though.
Gameplay wise though it's definitely the most enjoyable for me.
With great music... for the SMS ;). The NES soundtrack is much better.
Some real sweet music in this one
