Does anyone know how to use GIMP? I'm trying to load a manual into it for printing but I don't know how. Am I suppose to use layers or pages when importing the pdf?
Nobody uses GIMP? I could use some help if someone has time and experience. What I need to know is how to insert a PDF manual into the program and arrange the pages in the order they're supposed to be in.
Give me a little time, and I'll see if I can figure it out.
I came up with some ridiculous system using GIMP to split files into separate PDFs (when each image has 2 pages each), then using PDFSAM ( http://www.pdfsam.org/ ) to merge them back into a '1 page per page' PDF in normal page order, and then BookBinder ( http://quantumelephant.co.uk/bookbinder/bookbinder.html ) to do the imposition (i.e. layout the pages correctly for booklet printing). All the tools are free, but it's not exactly an automatic process.
OK. Here's what to do...
- Open the PDF in GIMP.
- Select to open the pages as "Layers."
- Set the resolution to "300" dpi.
- Check "Use Anti-aliasing."
- Click "Import."
- Go to "Image/Canvas Size."
- Change the width to "2960."
- Click "Center," then "Resize" (this should get rid of the white space).
- Put a marker right at 1480 along the top ruler. To do this, left click on the ruler along the left side, hold the mouse button down, and drag it.
- Select the first layer (the one with the cover on the right half).
- Split each of the pages in exactly half using that marker. Do this by pressing "R" on your keyboard, left clicking outside the canvas area on the upper left. Hold down the mouse button, and drag the tool so that the entire left half is selected (line up the small cross hair with the marker you made). Then select "Edit/Cut," and finally, select "Edit/Paste as/New Layer.
- Repeat this process through all of the pages so each half has its own layer. You shouldn't have to redraw the rectangle you made for splitting the layers, so just keep doing the "Cut"/"Paste as" thing. Be sure to turn off each finished set of layers (click the eyeball) as you go along so you can see the layers you want to split.
- Now comes the fun part; putting each half up in their respective order for printing. Make sure all the layers are turned off (no eyeballs showing), and then turn them on in this order, exporting each pair before moving on to the next pair...

Be sure to export each set of layers at max jpg quality so the prints will be better. And when it comes time for printing, don't forget that you have to print these on both sides of each sheet, which means being careful so everything lines up and doesn't get crooked.
Have fun!
Holy cow Coop, that's some serious tutorial. I'll try it out later on today when I get off of work to see if I can pull it off. Many thanks for the responses.
I wrote a GIMP script-fu script to do the "select left half/copy/do whatever" (in my case, save as PDF) + "select right half/copy/do whatever". Really makes the process a lot less painful.
And using bookbinder to layout all the pages for booklet printing removes the other half of the pain. I think it only takes PDFs as input though, hence my 'save as individual pdfs then merge to single pdf' stages.
fluxcore, I'm gonna try Coop's method first since yours seems a little complicated for my level of expertise. If I can't get any success with the first method, I'll try the second. Thank you for the input though. Both you guys are awesome!
Does anyone have Task Force Harrier EX? I need the cover art and manual scanned in color.

Hey Coop, if you will...please head over to the new thread I created just for this. I have more questions and I don't want to bog this manual request thread down with stuff like this. Thank you.
Oh, it's called Using GIMP to make Genesis Manuals in the Genesis Does section.
I need a scan of TSB III if anyone can provide it. I would be VERY grateful :)
I went to Office Max and had MUSHA, Splatterhouse 3, Mega Turrican, Sega CD RAM Cart and Air Buster manuals made. Many thanks to those of you who provided scans to make this possible. I now have nice quality manuals to complete some expensive games.
BTW, if anyone wants one of these manuals, I have the PDF files arranged and ready to print. Just email me at segafan1989@outlook.com and I'll send you the file.
