22 must-have games of all time

I'll try to suggest just 4 games to you (and with price for boxed set around $15 on ebay). I think that my "style" for games is like yours.

X-Men 2: Clone Wars
Comments: Technically superb. Great graphics, sounds and gameplay. You should buy this one! The soundtrack is techno (I don't like techno), but is composed by Kurt Harland, of Information Society and sounds really good.

Super Hang-On
Comments: The arcade mode is the port of the excellent arcade hit, by the master Yu Suzuki. The original mode is a career mode. Many people complains about the "delay" on the controls in this mode. But this happens because your motorcycle is a crap in the beginning. Try it for some hours in Kega Fusion and you will love this. This game is one of the few Genesis racing games that have in racing music + sfx + engine noise. Sounds reall good. And is very cheap on ebay.

Two Crude Dudes
Comments: An exclusive port from the Data East's arcade. A bizarre themed beat-'em-up that you should have in your collection. The port, IMO, is arcade superior 'cause the gameplay is much better on Genesis. A lot of fun and a good partner for your Streets Of Rage II.

The Revenge Of Shinobi
Comments: A true classic-masterpiece for Genesis. For many gamers, the best soundtrack ever (it's composed by Yuzo Koshiro). A must have. Some people could argue that Shinobi III is a better game, but as you said how much you care about the sound, I think you should go with this one. Very well drawn stages and great gameplay.

Games to put on the list...

Thunder Force IV- Arguably the best 16-bit shmup made.

Phantasy Star IV- Fantastic RPG in all respects and a fine end to the storyline.

Ristar- A platformer that's right up there with any of Sonic's offerings. Graphics, gameplay, music... it's all top notch.

6-Pak- Streets of Rage, Revenge of Shinobi, Golden Axe, Super Hang-On, Columns and Sonic 1, all on one cart. A lot of good gaming right there.

Alisia Dragoon- Wonderful action-platformer in all respects, with an interesting weapon system.

Battletech- Fun Mech game based on the Battletech universe. An absolute blast to play in two-player mode.

Castlevania: The New Generation- A fantastic game in graphics, music and old-school gameplay.

Shining in the Darkness- The game that started the franchise, and one of only two dungeon crawlers in it. Fun game, tough game.

Empire of Steel- Steampunk shmup that oozes graphical style, has some good music and a solid challenge.

Although I know that these games will be suggested by I think everyone, I want a most diverse 22 game collection possible so any other game is welcome!!

Of those choices, I suggest Castlevania and TF4.

Rocket Knight Adventures should really be in there somewhere; it's a technical tour de force, really well-designed, and hard but still fun to play. If it were me, I'd replace the Sonic cart with the Genesis 6-Pak, snag RKA, and finish off with either Golden Axe 2 or Granada depending on your tastes. Or maybe Red Zone.

(Actually, if it were me, I'd buy a bigger gamebox.)

Other than that I already said what I had to say as far as recommendations go:

Having Sonic 3D just to complete a collection of Sonic games is not a good reason as Sonic 3D isn't even a Sonic game: It's a game with Sonic in it.

I'd replace Mickey Mania with World of Illusion which is the third and final game of the Quackshot/Castle of Illusion series and a perfect 2 player game.

Your "game" #22 should be a flash cart, either the Neo Myth 3-in-1 or Everdrive. That way you can always play some of the games that never made it into your Top-22 but are well worth of being played.

anyway, I find shinobi III better then RoS and I'm not going to add a whole franchise exept for sonic.

Micky mania beeing replaced by world of illusion is something I might consider. Is it really that much better? I thought micky mania was fun to play, hard but fun.

A bigger gamebox is not an option since I'm building a MD kiosk (you can find the project in 'find threads started by miquell') so I'm stuck with limited amount of room but 22 games should cover most of the great games.

Sonic 3D is tosh. Buy Ecco the Dolphin.

id echo some peoples comments - DEF thunderforce IV and DEF rocket knight adv...

again - world of illusion is by far better than mickey mania imo.

and i know i probably sound like a broken record....cos i always shout it....but ghouls and ghosts is a classic too :)

take off jurassic park...and wack batman on instead - just cos its better ;)

id steer clear of street racer...i recently got it thinking it would be comparable with the snes version...but its not....and its pretty pants and doesnt have any of the elements that made it really cool on the snes....bah :(

micro machines is a really fun series, especially for multiplayer sessions

So if it's for an arcade cabinet you'll need to put either the 6-PAK or Mega Games Vol. 2 in there ! No Revenge of Shinobi, no Streets of Rage 1, and no Golden Axe at all makes baby Jesus not only cry but also suffocate on its own mucus.

This is a really stupid reason not to get Gunstar Heroes. It is by far the best run 'n gun game on the Genesis. If you have to, get rid of one of the other ones you have in your collection, because you're only cheating yourself out of one of the best games on the Genesis should you choose to ignore it.

Agreed. Ecco the Dolphin is one of the best games on the Genesis/Sega CD. Sonic 3D is tosh.

No, Gunstar heroes is good, I admit but it doesn't appeal to me that much. Consider I have only 22 games to choose from wich I want to be as varied as possibe Í'm not going to add this one to also my collection, it's either probotector or gunstar heroes.

As far as I understand gunstar and probotector are both praised equally, no? so what make gunstar heroes better then probotector?

It's better than Mega Turrican and especially Vectorman. It has a 2 player mode, allows you to choose from two totally different ways to control your character and to freely choose the first four stages, aaaand it can actually be beaten in one sitting.
