I can't say I don't like it... and its a very retro/80s sci-fi feel which only sega seems to have... As far as i know, it must have started on the box art of the sega master system games... and grew from there...
has anyone else ever noticed?

Just consider and compare the early Genesis' boxes to those late-gen color strata "let's recycle" cardboard nightmares.
That video barely got started before my "excessive 80's fashion" alarm went off and then exploded. Yikes.
I rather liked the grid stuff, 80's sci-fi...no childish pastels.
I never liked grids since they always reminded me of... graphs. Which I hate with a fury since I had to make upwards of 30 of them a couple years ago. And it sucked!
Besides that, I prefer this style:

More colorful, a lot less black compared to the large amount of black on the "grid style," and generally more appealing to the eye than the grid.
I love the classic grid pattern, it's one of the my favorite things about the aesthetics of the Genesis. Although pretty much everything about the console's design is sexy as hell.
I always liked the grid style boxes better than the red striped ones.
I also liked the grid pattern. It matched along with the SMS grid pattern. The red strip was ok I guess, untill they started making cardboard cases.:bang:Quote:

I like the grid design, but for me at least, the Red Stripe is far more iconic of the Genesis. You have to keep in mind though, I was 3 when the Genesis came out, and I didn't get one of my own until (I think) Christmas '92. The games we got with it, besides the pack in Sonic 2 (that is, The Lion King, The Jungle Book, and the Power Rangers fighting game) were all "Red Stripe" boxes.
I don't really even remember seeing the Grid Design at all when I was a kid, to be honest.

I don't mind the grid so much on the E-Swat, but the officer on the box looks very cheesy and bad. The Japanese Artwork is much cooler.
I found the grid cool when the art is cool too, but it's too often joined by some terrible artwork, especially for western SMS games (though there are some games with nice artwork like Land of Illusion).

Grid boxes all the way, nothing screams Sega like those black on gray awesome boxes. Lest we forget, Phantasy Star II's battles were all done on gridlines, as were all of the Space Harrier games and the dungeons in Phantasy Star I.
As much as the checkered boxes were great to organize and look nice, I always preferred the candy cane (plastic) boxes better because it was easier to tell the games apart and was brighter and more lively.
And I'm sure that we've put about 5x as much thought into this as the guys who came up with this back in 1992/93, lol.
Japanese artwork is (generally) far superior to anything the Western shores had, but they tend to ruin the artwork by throwing text and shit where ever they please.Quote:

Ugh, that looks like the street graffiti, er I mean business signage, in Houston. I'm not epileptic, but that kind of noise really makes me wish I were. At least then I could go on a trip rather than get a headache trying to figure out what to read. ;)
I like the EU blue and USA reds far more than the black ones with grid on them.
And I like the non JP boxart of E-Swat more :P
Konami had the best artwork during the 8 - 16bit era. I still wish I knew who their artists were.

The black background w/grid design is the first memory I have of the Genesis, from my childhood. I can't erase it from my mind nor would I want to. I don't have any qualms with the later-made package designs, but that grid will always and forever provide me with pleasant memories of my favorite game console, stemming back to youthful days of yore.
Needless to say, when it came time to design packaging for Beggar Prince and Legend of Wukong, the black background w/grid design was the only way to go -- helping to keep the positive memories building and flowing! :)
I prefer the PAL and JP blue stripe on the front cover. They looked fresh and modern and still do today. Never really cared for the grid, and always thought the red (Genesis) stripe was ridiculously ugly. Then again, I disliked american cover designs even when I was a kid.

^ Scans don't really do it justice tho. I think in person the Japanese box looks much better than the US box.
I liked the grid boxes better, but I feel the red stripe boxes are more recognizable. Like, when you see a ps1 game you look to the left and see the black stripe, so when you see the red stripe, you immediately know it's a Genesis game. If only they could have kept both.
Scan quality has no impact on the fact that (IMO) that artwork has too much going on..Quote:

I do feel that the Mastersystem version sums up the game much better.
And the white grid really works here, it gives the game a happy feeling.
I like the grid design better than the red stripe as well. Funny how you see so much of the copperplate used today, id like to think as the genesis as the start of that with the striped boxes. Anyways I still sig the red stripe, but then again the top cart label so many of the games look the same, which with the black label games usually used their own colors/ fonts for the game title on the end label.
Either way I still prefer those 2 designs to what the games were doing right before the red stripe, which was just the genesis logo tacked on somehere sorta like nes covers. heres 2 examples

and of course lets not get into Electronic Arts covers and how theres never a genesis logo even on most of their covers.

And don't get me started on Streets of Rage 3. Axel looks SO constipated on the american cover. The european one is just fine, not great, but fine. The japanese one just rocks.
