BTW i still have another donor cart, what game do you guys advise me to be my next project, its a regular cart so no save feature (damm that megaman willy wars will have to wait).

my printer XD nothing irregular A4 pages printed front and back thats it.

yeah the picture quality is really poor, and looks can be deciving but i dont have any digital camera it had to be from the cellphone but as i said nothing unusual, just normal paper and a normal printer, a quite old one i might add.

the only reason i want willy wars is because i dont have a NES so having the chance to play megaman on a console and not a emulator willy wars is the best chance i got.

I do appreciate repros and I've made tons of them myself (all for me, never sold any - never will.)
However, as soon as I bought my Everdrive flash cart I stopped caring about making any more repros. Since then, the Everdrive's never left my cart slot. :cool:
Repros are really good for soldering practice though!

I'd agree with this. Repro = pirate, however nicely produced - and I can understand the need to have tangible crap on your shelves, but not as a replacement for the originals. People charge / pay far too much for them sometimes, too.Quote:

i understand your prespectives and i somewhat know that a repro doesnt replace the real thing, but for me kinda does, having the box on the shelf for me is enough and il take what smii say'd i was very proud of my self when i made the repro, and i know that having a non-oficial rare game isnt a replacment, having a non-official rare game that you puted hard work on making it, almost does. XD
BTW, im really considering Megaman wily wars as im a great megaman fan, but for what i have looked megaman uses Sram like sonic 3, cant i adapt for using a batery pack as the games with batery are cheaper. and i dont want to ruin a sonic 3 cartridge,

Unlock socket, remove eprom, place new one, lock, adjust switch, ????, profit! <- Requires the MD case to be taken off. (Need to make a pcb spacer sometime)
That sega rom is obviously the original Ecco ToT rom :p
I love seeing people make repros of things that weren't released. Genesis Wily Wars, Megadrive MUSHA, translations etc. Things which are obviously reproductions and can be appreciated as that.
What I don't get is people making repros of games that were officially released. As someone who enjoys collecting rarer games it does make me a bit uneasy.
actualy if you are like me and you can only spend so much on a game, i never spended more than 20€ on games, why? because i simply cant, im a student i dont have a stable income, so i already collect for 3 systems, mega drive, mega cd and 32x, and i simply cant spend on rare games, so i just make them so i can put then on the shelf, they work great and they "pass" as originals.
BTW you have there a chaotix, does it work on a regular cartridge? dont 32x cartridges have any kind of diferent hardware?.
Chaotix only has FRAM for saving games and the logic for it and the fact it uses 2 ROM ICs, 2MB + 1MB. That chip is 4MB (M27C322) so the whole game fits in there and no rom decoder is needed, but of course no-save :|.

I've seen this happen a lot in the Neo Geo communities with their games being so expensive. Some of the guys over there have to examine booklets/inserts down to the ink being used, dpi and crazy detail.
I think the best thing for any repro maker to do is to at least include some small extra detail that's different. Be it a logo or some tiny marking on the label that can't be removed just to signify it's a reproduction.

I agree entirely, and others have said these things before - but it's not a thing many people complain about, for whatever reason. Maybe there aren't too many obsessive MD collectors? Anyway - it's fine for people to produce nice-looking repros of released games for themselves, but it can cause a load of extra bother for collectors. Since there's no way of proving the authenticity of a game 100%, it's possible that the more authentic looking repros are produced and sold, the more room there is for scammers to cry "fake!", have evilbay etc refund their money, and get themselves a free game. Slightly paranoid maybe, but I'd rather not have that extra risk if I choose to sell some of my collection in the future - I'd want to get back at least what I paid (who wouldn't?) An obvious solution is to do as o1s1n said - mark repros as such - but most people don't seem to like that idea. (Nobody ever gave a decent explaination as to why though.)Quote:

Someone not wanting an extra marking somewhere or a changed logo is a good enough reason, I think. It all comes down to personal opinion. Some people are really opposed to repros, other people, like myself, don't really care. If I were making an expensive purchase of a rare item, I'd definitely ask questions before taking the plunge. Repros are a nice way of having uncommon games sitting on your shelf that are in a playable state that aren't tied to a PC or emulated... also, I think a lot of people just think it's cool in general to have stuff like that since, for the most part, the repros themselves tend to be pretty uncommon and would probably end up being a collectors item anyway if made in bulk and numbered.Quote:

I was reading a thread yesterday where a guy wanted to buy a Blazing Star AES cart. They worked out it was a bootleg because the cover and label were missing 3mm of artwork around the edges. 3mm!
The only true way of testing it 100% would be to open the cart casing to check the chips. As a result, this could cause damage. Nobody buying a cart worth 500+ wants to have to do this. Hell, nobody who buys a cart for any amount of money wants to do this.
I'm not denying that some repros are lovely. They are. Some of the work I've seen is spectacular. I think just to save the above major headfuck and someone being ripped off in future if it happens to make it's way into circulation, you should put some extra marking on it.
Smii is spot on with the price of rare games. The most expensive MD games I've bought (apart from prototypes and samples) are PAL Alien Soldier, PAL Wiley Wars and PAL Duke Nukem. All cost under €50 each. And that really is a strech. Most of the rest of my stuff was well under €30. Even for the harder to find stuff like Probotector, MUSHA, PAL Ecco Jr. .
I also see collecting games as preservation. Sure, I play games, but I'm also interested in documenting the stuff. Its a piece of videogame history and I'd like to do my bit to save it for future generations. By making exact indistinguishable copies, you're messing that up.
Anyway, TLDR version - for the love of god, put a marking on them. Even a tiny pixel sized dot. Just so we know! :D
Translated Bare Knuckle III on cart with English cover/manual = Repro
Translated Monster World IV on cart with English cover/manual = Repro
NTSC patched rom of Europe only game in red Genesis box with US style manual = Repro
unmodified Wily Wars (E) rom burned onto Eprom and put in a box with printed European cover and recreated Euro manual with Euro cart sticker = BOOTLEG.
Well technically they're all bootlegs. 'Repro' just means reproduction. If you're making an unmodified PAL Wiley Wars then it's a reproduction as well as being a bootleg.
I do get what you're saying though. And have absolutely no issue with reproductions of unreleased/modified games. As it's obvious they're not official. Nobody is going to get conned.
One great thing about Megadrive collecting is the low level of reproductions going on due to most games being cheap and easy to buy. If you buy a game you can be pretty sure it's 100% legit. (Unless of course it's some dodgy asian boot that is!)
The less of these unmodified copies in circulation the better.
I think the most expensive original MD cartridge is the SEGA Tetris... :)

Repros are cool but yeah. Selling then is wrong.
Now an rant about consumer items. Video games are consumer items, not bars of gold. At some point they will end on dumpsters/trash bins/terrain.
So if people get "pissed" about a guy who "rapes" an Captain Novolin SNES cartridge to make it into something better I don't see a rational reason. Well a few weeks ago I ruined (an already run down) Yoshi's Island cartridge to get an GSU-2 chip for my Starfox2 repro (yes so it would run on the proper speed as GSU-2 FX is faster than the GSU-1 chip people suggest for this repro) with wonderful results.
I also bought cheap MVS Neo Geo cartridges (mostly a whole lot of six copies of KOF-96) to make into better games like Money Idol Exchanger, Waku Waku Seven, Gowcaizer, Puzzle Bobble, etc...
But then I won't put them on Ebay or anything.
Trust me, if things aren't recycled, they're either hoarded by an collector or ends into the dumpster/grinded if it doesn't meet the collectors standard.
In the end to each one it's own... But hey I agree that it's fuxxored up put repros on ebay. Even if it's marked as an repro for them being botlegs. Anyway seems like trading and selling botlegs are "cool" now (even some collectors are getting specialized on that) wow... :cool:

It's just crazy to me that reproductions can fetch prices near (or sometimes even above) originals, and it isn't even so uncommon in recent months.

I'd also been after PAL Alien Soldier for over half a decade until finally getting it last year for around the €50 mark, also CIB.
The thrill of the hunt and finally finding something for a decent price is half of the fun :)
Orginal Megadrive carts are indeed high in blast processing nutrients. You'd want to watch out for those repros, they're full of carbs!
