I just recently discovered these too, after installing Sonic & Knuckles Collection for the first time in years.
They're so terribly ridiculous, I love it. :D
I'm saving some of these to my computer. Love to see some new Sonic artwork, be it official or fan-made.
All of that artwork is included on the Sonic compilation "Sonic Gems Collection", which was released in 2005. Am I the only person here who bought a copy? :|
I miss 90's airbrush art. Everything was cooler with a gradient.
Sonic 3 UK cover art. 'Nuff said.
Can't believe some of you defend THAT.
Like Lisa Frank?

My younger sister used to obsessed with her. Had every school supply with her artwork she could get.
I saw it years earlier on Sonic Jam. Actually sort of surprised it's now only known for being on Sonic Gems? :?
I never thought of them as ridiculous really, but that's probably because I first saw them years ago when I was younger, so it doesn't have the same image to me that it does to others now. If that makes sense :D
Those aren't too bad. Nowhere near as nasty as some of the fan-made Cream slash pr0n pics floating around the web.

Even Sonic partakes in the Hollywood cliche of french bread in the grocery bag.
Every single TV show/movie I've ever seen that includes someone coming home from buying groceries, the person will have friggin' french bread sticking out the top of the bag.
*EVERY TIME*
lol at the above comments.
though all of those pics can be seen on the sega saturn game, sonic jam. its an unlockable.
Personally, I really like those pictures. But I have great memories of exploring Sonic Jam and discovering them in the 3D Sonic World, so perhaps I'm biased. Sonic Jam rules btw.
i must admit sonic jams ending was abit of a let down
Guys pay attention to the Sonic 3 UK Box art, it clearly says "Sonic 3: part 1".

All of those "lost" Artworks are from Sonic the Screensaver wich was bundled with the Sonic & Knuckles Collection on the PC and sold seperately in Japan.
I like the full Artwork of the EU Sonic 3 cover with the "hidden message". I discovered this when the Gems Collection was new and this just shows what Sonic 3 really is. Kinda like Sonic 4 Episode I. :D
Nothing trumps the commercial of clay-doh Sonic breakdancing and moonwalking on the hood of a car.
Yeah, that was pretty jawusum.....
....for a break dancing clay Sonic.
I find that to be insulting. Not many of us had Saturns from back in the day you know. Most of my Sega gaming was on Windows. I had Sonic & Knuckles Collection, Garfield PC, Sonic R, Sonic CD, Sega Smash Pack Vol. 2 and probably one or two others.
That would explain why I don't remember these pieces of artwork from Sonic & Knuckles Collection. I never had Sonic the Screensaver.
They're not strange or mysterious; they're just promotional material rendered in that cute, slightly surreal, early-90s Japanese mascot style. These are some of my favourites:

Sega World is a happy place :]

The opening of Joypolis! :]

The Saturn is launched! :]

'Merry Xmas, here's Sonic & crew rocking out Saturday morning cartoon-style!' :]
Nobody produces promo material like this any more - the kind of material that you'd see on corporate postcards, stamped on keyrings, or in horrible horrible nightmarish dimly-lit themed restaurants that'd do nothing but play the SONIC IS DROWNING theme over and over and over and over-

Loved this promotional art stuff from Sonic Jam on Saturn, I think it was on Sonic Screensaver for Windows too. It's pretty cheesy, but there's something about it I like, haha.
This one is definitely my favourite.

Reminds me when I was a kid and I'd go to the mall to play Sonic 2 at the Genesis play booth in Compucenter... good times :)
Was I the only one expecting this pic?

Well there goes my lunch
Says the guy with one of the dodgiest in-game pics of Axel as his avatar ;P
...could be worse though...

In other news, I think I'll use "Tails Freezes To Death" as my Xmas card this year :)

Terrible. Absolutely terrible.
As someone who first owned the PC version before the Saturn version, I will say the PC version of Sonic R is a LOT better. It controls better, it looks better, and there are weather effects. The Saturn version is still great, but the PC version is the one to go for, and a heck of a lot cheaper and easier to find too.
I, too, thought this thread would be about fanart.

Ugh, there goes my dinner too
Do you have to quote the picture as well?
Uh... well, I love both.
Both the Sonic 3 EUR (not just UK, you know) cover and the SoR3 ending.
Did you guys know even the art for Blaze in that ending was censored in the West? The japanese version for that pic where she's wearing a swimsuit is slightly different in the (superior) japanese version ;)
I got these 2 and they are clearly fan made
